NBA Playoffs - 2009

Lakers win because Kobe finally realized he can't do it himself. Without Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, no way do they win.

I look forward to a Celtics-Lakers rematch of 2008 next year...

Kobe never believed he could win a championship all by himself. You reference a cliche that has no basis in reality. Its just a mantra picked up by know-nothing talking heads and then repeated by equally "informed" writers and fans. What do you think his whole "if you're not trying to build a champion here, then trade me", controversy was all about? He always knew he needed talented teammates in order to win another championship.

The days when he would take 35-40 shots in the years immediately following the Shaq trade were based upon Kobe's (correct) perception that he was the team's best 1, 2, and 3rd, options on offense. Although, I don't know, maybe you had a lot more confidence in Chuckie Atkins, Brian Cook, Kwame Brown, or Smush Parker, etc, than I did.

And I feel that it is finally Kobe's realization that he can't do it all--in fact the more he scores, the more the Lakers lose--and willingness to take responsibility for bad games and create a better atmosphere that did the trick.

Or was the Zenmaster not being truthful in documenting Kobe's lack of maturity?

I offer this as a compliment, by the way; if you think Kobe shits gold, I must respectfully disagree.

Much like Labron had a lesson this year.

--in fact the more he scores, the more the Lakers lose--
Another meaningless oft repeated cliche. Kobe's high scoring games that resulted in losses, for the most part, were games in which he was was generally, the only player on the team who could score. But of course, this is always reported and then picked up by fans as, "the more Kobe scores, the more the Lakers lose". There has rarely been any cause and effect between the two in games.

Oh I'm not saying Kobe hasn't learned, its just that he hasn't learned what you and most of the talking heads think he has learned.

If you have the opportunity and desire, read this piece by Kevin Ding of the OC Register. It might help you understand some of what I'm talking about. Its a lot more complex than you might think.

Still, the final result is the same. Kobe Bryant alone can't lead a team to victory. He needs other people to score as well.

This was the same with Jordan, it was the same with Wilt (back when people would guard him with four people, the Warriors couldn't win because no one else could score).

Yeah, I'd say that's pretty big news.

While Shaq isn't the Shaq of old, he had a very good season last year and will definitely help the Cavs (plus, I love the fact that the East is no longer the West's punching bag).

Couple more big trades so far... Richard Jefferson is now a Spur. If they can find one more decent big man they'd have a killer starting five (depending on if Ginobili starts and stays healthy). And it looks like Vince Carter is going to Orlando.

NBA's shaking things up!

Don't see how Vince Carter helps Orlando, which already has a ton of offensive firepower....

Shaq and Illgauskus in the middle might be interesting... Although both are getting old...

Jefferson to San Antonio... could help, as long as they don't lose too much defense...

Apparently the Golden Star Warriors drafted Stephen Curry as part of a trade with the Phoenix Suns. Amar'e Stoudemire for Curry, Andres Biedrins, Brandan Wright and/or Marco Belinelli. It should happen on Wednesday.

Ok. Weirdness. Last year the Suns drafted Robin Lopez the less successful of the two Lopez brothers (the other was drafted higher in the same draft). This year the Suns drafted Taylor Griffin the less successful of the two Griffin brothers (the other was drafted number one in the same draft). Last year the Suns drafted Goran Dragic from Ljubljana, Slovenia. This year the Suns drafted Emir Preldzic from Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Something weird is going on.

Word is that the Bucks will waive Bowen. My guess is he'll be right back on the Spurs next year. Even so, he's already lost his starting job and they haven't found a suitable replacement until now. Micheal Finley was out of position last year and isn't exactly known for his defense (or offense these days really either). The Spurs' biggest defensive liability is starting Matt Bonner at PF/C. He shoots the three well, but does little else on the floor.

There is a part of me that hopes this trade does not happen. The Warriors are overpaying for a guy who is injury prone and came off a major injury last season. Andres Biedrins is an up and coming big man who can actually rebound and that is something the Warriors need. I think it would be a mistake to trade him no matter how good Stoudemire is.

Shaq to Cle: Even in the best of times Shaq's D was hit or miss. Now at age 37, the Cavs are bringing him in for the express purpose of playing defense. If Shaq were to fully commit to playing defense a la Wilt's commitment back in the day with the Lakers, Cle might have something, but Shaq's main thing has always been scoring. He uses defensive sequences to preserve energy. Best they can hope is that by having to defend Fatass, Dwight will get worn down or in foul trouble. These quick fix NBA personnel moves almost never work.

Vinsanity to Magic; If they keep Turkyglu, they will be much improved - if they lose him, they'll miss his floor leadership. Carter does provide something they needed more of, a perimeter guy who can create.

Jefferson to Spurs: Known all of his career as a offensive player, Richard will be bitten by bug that causes "defensive flu", upon arrival in San Antonio. He'll be grabbing pushing, holding with the best of them this season. Spurs with healthy Gino will be much improved.

Agree with Tomalak about Biedrins. Amare is WAY overrated and requires another good big man in order to provide max contribution. He plays no D, but is a diva - go figure. Nelson will make the trade though because he is an idiot.

Celts: Shopping Rondo and Allen - and getting turned down

Lakers: If we re-sign Odom and Ariza, barring injury, will repeat as NBA champs.
