Mr. Scotts natural voice

Lieutenant Commander

The actor who played Mr. Scott can be seen in the Twilight Zone episode Valley of the Shadow and believe me he sounds different than the Mr. Scott from TOS. So what is his natural voice? From TOS, or the Twilight Zone?

James Doohan's natural accent was standard North American. He was known for doing a number of different accents and dialects, and voiced several guest characters on the animated Star Trek.

But his supposedly "Scottish" accent was about as authentic as Dick Van Dyke's attempt at speaking Cockney in Mary Poppins.

He also appeared as a security agent in two episodes of Voyage To The Bottom of The Sea and was up for the role of Chief Sharkey in season two but obviously he didn't get it but did get a semi-continuing role on a show called Star Trek in 1966! Anyone ever heard of it?

Hey, it’s cool if you like to argue. You referred to your “ancestors”. Well, his immediate ancestors, I.e. his parents, were born in Ireland, emigrated as adults, and I’m sure he knew what a Belfast accent sounded like growing up...and accents are what this thread is about. People lik

My ancestors were Scots, Irish, and Native American. But I fer dang shure don't sound like none o' them.

Doohan's accents were his approximations of what he thought they should be. No more, no less.

I'm just waiting for a real Scot to get the panties in a wad over Doohan's "cultural appropriation." :guffaw:

The question was what Doohan's natural accent was. While he may know what a Belfast accent sounds like, didn't use one as Scotty or in real life. So mentioning his Irish background or saying he's Irish, as Commander Luskeen did, has nothing to so with the question.

As are anyone else's, for that matter. The last time I rewatched TOS, it struck me how much his Scots accent rang true, considering how vociferously some here scoff at its authenticity. Maybe it was a Mid-Atlantic with a strong burr most of the time, but it was better than some I've heard over the years.

You never heard a Scot speak? ;)
