I rented three DC animated movies from redbox the other night, but one of 'em was too scratched up to actually watch.

Ah, well...

Of the two that could play, neither of 'em were very good.

The superhero girls movie was like bad fan fiction that had heroes & villians in boarding school together with Amanda Waller as the principal, Gorilla Grodd as the vice principal, and Commissioner Gordon as the forensics science teacher, with Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, and Supergirl among the most prominent of the students. Beast Boy, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Katana, Killer Frost, Cheetarah, Lois Lane, and Big Barda had minor roles, as well.

...ugh...

The selling point for the animated Batman was that it starred Adam West, Burt Ward & Julie Newmar, three of the surviving members of the '60s tv series. And the story was incredibly cheesy, like the '60s tv series. But it was a bit too meta, and the Michael Keaton Batman quote really threw me off. The best joke, I thought, was when Batman got hit over the head, and saw all three versions of Catwoman from the '60s series & movie.

Kinda bummed I wasn't able to watch Lego Superheroes Justice League: Gotham City Breakout - Original Movie...

Returned the first round of redbox rentals, tried to rent a different copy of Gotham City Breakout, but it turned out to be scratched all to hell, too.

I also rented the Lego Justice League vs Brainiac movie. It was cute, with some nice humor. Didn't care much for the Voltron homage/rip off, though the sight gag at the end was nice.

I watched the extended version of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice anyways, last week sometimes.

Also have watched Ghostbusters (2016) and have seen the new movie, Trolls last Tuesday.

Had to go to Lufkin yesterday, deal with some stuff. Didn't want to just go out there, and come back. so I went to the movies. Original plan was to see Hacksaw Ridge, but I was too late for that one. So, I went with my second choice, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 2D.

I liked the movie more than I thought I would, since I'm not the biggest Harry Potter fan, but I'm glad I didn't go for the 3D, considering how dark the lighting was for some scenes, and that last bit towards the end made me dry heave a bit.

Watched the Colin Quinn standup when I got in from work this morning. Pretty funny, even though I've never been to NYC.

Got a plan to go see Arrival Thursday, since its playing over in Jacksonville.

Popcorn flick? Yes, but what else were you expecting?

The sequel is better than the original simply by giving Butler someone to play off of for the majority of the movie. His quips and back and forth with Eckhart add some levity between kills.

I felt a CinemaSins (see YouTube) moment when the terrorist was dicking around instead of killing the President. Even when he got the Internet back, its like: "why are you walking a fucking circle around him? Just kill him already!"

Moana - Theater - For Ian's 8th birthday, we had a movie birthday party and we saw Moana. This is another in a great line of Disney movies, without the typical Disney Princess. The young actress who played Moana is simply amazing, she has an incredible voice. After a few minutes you get past Dwayne Johnson and embrace him as Maui. He's so infectious, it's hard not to. I want to start a petition of having him sing his song You're Welcome at the Oscars.

I don't know why, but I watched TABM via Netflix the other day. Dear lord...

Went out to Jacksonville last night, first time to visit their movie theater. I enjoyed the new Disney movie quite a bit, especially the Rock's song, the angry coconut pirates, and that "Away, Away" song.

Had the theater all to myself for the 9:30 showing of Arrival. That was a pretty cool scifi flick, with a bit of a twist I could not figure out 'til it was spelled out towards the end.

Weird thing - no trailers before either movie. There was the "Front & Center" thing for the twenty minutes leading up to the movie, Moana had the cartoon short about the office drone, and then, the movie.

I may have to go back out to Jacksonville from time to time. Nice, clean theater, relatively cheap tickets ($8 each, but they have $4 discount Tuesday shows), and the people in the Disney movie (a few dozen) weren't too disruptive (cellphones, small children, that sort of thing).

I liked it mostly, although there were far too many cameos, in my opinion. I would have liked it to focus more on the main characters more, instead of endless fan-service. It should also have ended with Jynn and Andor dying rather than transitioning into A New Hope(CGI Leia was very distracting).

After The New York Story, I decided to watch Colin Quinn's take on the constitution. Nicely done, comparing Madison and the constitutional convention to a month long pub crawl through Philadelphia.

I don't know why, but I watched Kevin Smith's daughter's movie. Jesus, he used to be really great. The fuck happened?

Went to the theater for the first matinee of the day of the new Star Wars movie yesterday morning. Not sure how I feel about it, except that Donnie Yen was awesome and the 3D was not worth it. I will have to go see it again in 2D, I think, now that I know who's who, what's what, and how it all fits in together with the rest of the franchise.

Rogue One may just be my last trip to the movie theater this year, too...

Been watching a few movies at the house this past week.

TMoaIA has Kevin James playing a writer who's fiction hits too close to the truth, and when he is believed to be the assassin he wrote about, winds up kidnapped and tasked to assassinate a CIA-backed foreign president, a Russian drug dealer, and a Central American rebel leader. Pretty funny movie, though I kinda figured the character plot twist before it was revealed.

TD-O was a gawd awful movie that features Adam Sandler playing yet another character who is dying of an incurable disease. This time out, he fakes his death along with best buddy from high school played by David Spade in an attempt to find the cure. And some how, someone some where convinced Emmy & Golden Globe winning and MTV Award nominated actor Michael Chiklis to be in it for two scenes, one where he's a rampaging angry husband & later where he gets A LINE of dialogue.

Ghostheads was an okay documentary focused on a few members of Ghostbusters fandom/cosplay with interview snippets from Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, Ivan Reitman, Paul Feig & others from the films & cartoons. Not really all that enlightening, but still, kinda makes me wish I had a Ghostbusters costume to wear.

Tom Papa's comedy special was pretty funny, I enjoyed it.

Fluffy's comedy special cracked me up, well worth watching.

Sing - theater - Took the brood to see the newest film brought to us by the people who've made Shrek, Ice Age, Minions, and every other terrible animated movie. It's movies like this that you are thankful for Disney & Pixar. Hey this movie is just like Zootopia, it also has talking animals. However you must disengage your brain. The kids liked it and outside of a few fleeting moments, me not so much. I wanted to see Moana again instead of this and I really wish I'd had. I'm going to see Moana tomorrow just to get the bad image of this out of my brain.

Ron Perlman plays a CIA agent with PTSD from an assignment in Vietnam who is sent by his bosses to England prior to NASA's moon landing. His mission is to get Stanley Kubrick to direct a short film of astronauts on the moon. The plan is, if the actual landing goes to hell, the government will broadcast the footage filmed overseas in its place.

The ginger from the Harry Potter fim series plays a dumbass band manager who uses his stoner roommate as a fill-in for Stanley Kubrick when Ron Perlman mistakes him for a professional agent. He takes the briefcase full of money, wastes some & has the rest stolen.

When he's tracked down by Ron Perlman, hilarity was supposed to ensue, I think.

Perlman was, of course, awesome in the movie.

But the movie itself kinda sucked.

Wound up at the theater today, mostly to swap out my 2016 popcorn bucket for the new 2017 popcorn bucket. Only $4.25 a refill for the year!

So, my last "new to me" movie of the year is Assassin's Creed. I saw it in 3D 'cause that's what was available at the time I was at the theater. I tried to go to the 2D showing in Lufkin this morning, but they were sold out of popcorn buckets. I wound up at the 3D showing this afternoon in Nacogdoches because they were still using the new buckets as decorations on the counter.

Got a free large soda, too, with the trade in.

Anyway, the movie...I've played a bit of each of the games for the xbox 360, and have enjoyed 'em without finishing a one of 'em yet. Still, its a cool story idea, and I'd say the movie is faithful to that idea. I like the change to the Anibus, the device used to recreate the memories of the subject's ancestor, because watching Michael Fessbender just laying in bed would be dull. Seems a bad idea to have so many weapons readily available, though...

The Templars want the Apple of Eden, they have the last descendant of the last Assassin who had possession of the Apple. They recreate his genetic memories of the Spanish Inquisition, and the actions taken by the Assassins in that time. Plenty of parkour, a couple of leaps of faith, lots of killing with very little blood, and a bird flying around made it feel pretty true to the game. It was missing eavesdropping, picking pockets & saving random folks, but did use the same "excuse me" gesture to get through crowds.

The 3D was pretty good, not too "in your face" but just enough stuff to make it worth the price.

And that concludes my 2016 list of movies, since I have to work tonight.
