Finally got around to seeing this. It's a cute little animated film. Reminded me alot of some of the schtick you'd seen in the ole Bugs/Daffy type gags. The large array of guns as Vector and Gru went at each other. I know the adopted girls were meant to show how Gru was redeemable AND connect with the movies intended audience but it just didn't fully work for me. Hence B+. Good film though.

Well, I decided to go to the movies and see a couple more before the year was out. I think it's safe to say this is probably it for the year now, as I don't plan to see another one tonight.
The first one was Sherlock Holmes, and it was enjoyable, but it was par for the course of the first one. The jokes were there, Downey Jr's. wit was still there, but I think it loses some points for me in how the movie goes from one point to another. It actually seemed a little more convoluted to me, and there were parts of it where I found myself dosing off. Still, it was enjoyable and a worthy sequel.
The second one, and the better one, was Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I typically like David Fincher movies and this one wasn't too different. I haven't read the book or seen the original, but I enjoyed this one even though I wonder if it could have been shortaned. The end felt long and I was starting to wonder if the movie was ever going to end. Really liked Craig here (The more I see him the more I like him) and Rooney was fantastic as the girl. I could actually see her being nominated if there is a nomination to be had for this movie. I'm not sure if I would rank it as the best movie of the year, but I really liked it.

The final film I saw this year, I enjoyed it, but wasn't blown away, despite being a fan of the character from Herge's original comics. Much of the action was too calculated and controlled to convey the tension of a live action action movie, and most of the characters (and the setting) were so close to an actual live-action movie that I'm not sure motion capture was really necessary.

112. X-Men First Class - B+ (rewatch). I'd seen a bad feed of this before (at a local pub) that made the f/x look bad, watched it at home on disc it looked great so bumping my grade up. Probably the best X-Men movie. Magneto and Xavier are clearly the best characters so yeah, make a movie based around them and it's bound to be great.
113. Hellboy 2 (rewatch, blu-ray) - A-. Just a visually stunning movie which is a lot of fun. My only complaint is that after all the build-up the actual golden army comes off as more cartoony than menacing.

I mostly looked backwards instead of forwards this year with my movie watching, becoming acquainted with old classics I'd never seen or revisiting favorite movies in high definition for the first time. I don't see this trend changing any time soon.
All the President's Men, Rear Window, and Network were all kind of revelatory experiences.

I'll start with the worst movies I've seen this year because it's easier. Under no circumstances watch these films:
11 Meltdown: Days of Destruction (2006) TV Movie: It has Venus Terzo (Da Vinci's Inquest, X-Men: Evolution) in it. That is the only good thing I'm going to say about it. Bad science, I mean really bad science, and I'm a Star Trek fan!
91 Christmas in Wonderland (2007): Terrible.
I've watched so many movies this year a top 10 list is too difficult.
Top 13 (in viewing order):
6 Tokyo no kôrasu [Tokyo Chorus] (1931): This film made me want to see more Japanese pre-WWII and in particular Ozu films.
50 Metropolis (1927) Restored: The restored version is like a completely different film.
70 On the Waterfront (1954): Watching Marlon Brando makes me think of a young Shatner. Now obviously Shatner is not as talented as Brando but Shatner's physicality early in his career reminds me of Brando. I wonder how much Shatner was imitating Brando, how much of it was subconscious, how much it had become the acting style of the time and how much of it is coincidence.
84 The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962): Tom Courtenay with an amazing performance, powerful film. I need to watch more "Angry Young Man" films.
118 Ladri di biciclette [Bicycle Thieves] (1948): This film stayed in my thoughts every day for weeks.
145 Missing (1982): Fantastic performance from Jack Lemon.
175 Smultronstället [Wild Strawberries] (1957): Facinating.
184 Fail Safe (1964): Disturbing.

I'll be lucky to get to a quarter of that total this year. I have too many TV shows on the PVR and on blu-ray I need to watch, not to mention some video games I want to get to.

When I saw Tokyo no kôrasu [Tokyo Chorus] (1931) early in 2011 I truly became a fan of silent film and of Japanese director Ozu. Watching the German films Metropolis (1927) and Das Kabinet des Dr Caligari [The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari] (1920) has really cemented by appreciation for the genre.
