MLB World Series 2018: Eh. Dodgers/Boston. Eh.

What about John Farrell? Has he given up on the prospect of ever managing again? (I realize he's had health problems, but I was under the impression that it was under control.)

He's a scout for the Reds, maybe he finds it less stressful than managing. I didn't know John has 3 sons, all in the Cubs organization.

Yeah, if this payroll disparity is not going to be dealt with MLB might want to consider some sort of Premier League like system to determine who plays who.

I think Dodgers will win one game at least. Maybe even two.

About DH rule, there's something story-esque and romantic about having the same players have to both field and hit. And you could make slippery slope claims, "Hey why not have two DHes so the .200 catcher doesn't have to hit? Why not have totally different offensive and defensive units like in football??!" But honestly having competent hitters hit is just better entertainment.

Complaining about payroll disparity leads to anti-labor solutions like salary caps. No, thanks. Every single owner in MLB could afford the same payrolls if they really wanted to; they're just cheap.

The disparity in payroll in baseball is entirely due to cheapskate owners and nothing more. You have to have a fuckton of money to own and operate a baseball team; even the Rays are worth ~$900 million. The Pirates are worth like $1.26 billion, for example, which makes their offseason fire sale incomprehensible.

I can't exactly complain about lack of salary cap since I am, in fact, a Red Sox fan.

But the league is just a lot more fun for small market team fans when there's some kind of fairness. Unless it's YOUR team that's winning it's no fun to watch the league knowing that money has more of an impact on results than talent.

The other option is that Premier League option. Have the top teams exclusively play each other, and after every year, the best few teams from the lower league move up and the bottom few teams from the upper league move down. It'd at the very least incentivize owners to pay more. You want to get in the top league? Pay for it. Do right by your fans.

Excuse me if I'm not too worried about something being 'Anti-labor' in a profession where the minimum wage is higher than my salary. So, David Price can own two islands instead of three, fine with me.

You know what would make things fair? If all of the other billionaire owners paid what it takes to win. Again, they can all afford it. It's not because they're "small market teams." It's because their owners are cheap, they don't actually care about winning as long as they're turning a profit.

The NFL, NBA, and NHL all have salary caps, supposedly to promote "parity," and yet their playoffs and championships are dominated by the same few teams almost every year, while MLB more often has wildly different playoff brackets nearly every year.

Sports is boring when it’s obvious payroll trumps skill.

Doesn’t matter if you point a finger at the owners, you can point it wherever, it remains that the league would be more interesting if any shrewd GM had equal chance to build a great team.

Excuse me if it doesn’t bother me if people making millions to do what they love get slightly less sweet a deal to improve the quality of their product.

Payroll minimums would work too I guess.

NBA would have more parity with a hard salary cap. And Toronto isn’t exactly big market, and Warriors hadn’t been good for years before Curry showed up.

I tend to think a baseball salary cap would be problematic, because of how talent is acquired at the amateur level.

Just a huge difference between how teams work in NFL/NBA/NHL and MLB. Always some teams that bounce around, but you get more consistency in playoff appearances in the other sports because it's easier to have a dominant player carry a team. If you have a Tom Brady, Lebron, or whatever, you're going to be good. If you have a Blake Bortles, probably not. But maybe you'll get lucky and go on a run with an Eli or something.

Baseball is an individual sport dressed up as a team sport. You can have the most dominant Starting Pitcher in the league, a Sandy Koufax or 1999 Pedro, but he only even plays every 5 days. Trout may be the best player in a while, but just one spot on the field and bats every 9 batters. Even when they play out of their minds, just can't dominate an entire game. much less a series or season.

Not sure a salary cap really addresses much, although you should have a salary floor of revenue sharing plus percentage of ticket sales or something to prevent doormats. Couple teams spend less than revenue sharing, so made a profit before they sold a single ticket or hot dog. Definitely not ok

Don't forget that MLB already has a soft salary cap in the form of the luxury tax (because the MLBPA is worthless).

In other news, pouring out a 40 because Jeter had the Dinger Machine removed today. :(

What’s the rule for intentionslally sliding into someone’s shin to prevent a DP?

It was absolutely blatant, tied in 8th inning of World Series game. Terrible no call that should have been ejection and fine.

Madness. David Price just came in relief on only two days of rest.

In this particular case, I don't think there's an argument for overturning it. Bogaerts had already thrown the ball before Turner made contact.

Longest game in World Series history tonight / this morning. I can't stand the Red Sox and the Dodgers are weirdly unlikable, but this ... is something.
