News Matthew Rhys to Play Perry Mason in HBO Limited Series

Ah, yes, that. I didn't see that coming, but I wasn't surprised either, especially considering what we saw in the opening scene of this episode.

At first, it felt a little anticlimactic, but it slowly concluded with a very satisfying ending. I loved the negotiations between Perry and Della and how, as Paul described, Perry was getting his ass handed to him.

Bring on season two!

Post script: I do wonder about one thing. I don't expect this will ever be addressed and it probably shouldn't be, considering the case is closed and separate from the core story of Perry Mason:

Considering the relative ease of how Birdy was able to obtain a baby (probably an orphan) to fill in the role of Charlie resurrected, I wonder if Alice is actually Birdy's child. That's not to say I think a horrible mother wouldn't hand over her daughter to a child molester out of the belief of divine providence. But considering how Birdy has always used Alice as a prop for her super church, how Birdy never showed unconditional love towards Alice, and how easily Birdy switched over to Emily after Alice didn't return, it seems entirely plausible Alice was also a kidnapped child.

Which, really, adds a whole new layer to Charlie's kidnapping.

Only caught the last segment, but it was enough to get me to watch next season. Great cast.

You know that never even occurred to me.........#deepthoughts.

I had resigned myself to it being a dark ending where, like life, sometimes the bad guys get away with it. The writers held their cards and MAN what a nice payoff from there until the end. I HOPE Stephen Root returns for his run for Mayor next year.

I would love to see Stephen Root and Shia Whigham return, even if their characters aren't part of the Mason canon (at least I don't think they are based on my limited knowledge). Both were so excellent (and I kept expecting Pete to die to make room for Paul) so it would be a shame to have them for only one season.

Pretty gritty and dark so far........but good. Just getting into the courtroom now.

I went back and watched the first episode from 1957 on CBSAA the other night.......THAT was a hoot.
I hope it comes out on DVD. Only way I can check this version out. Don't have HBO.

Have you ever seen the 80's/90's Perry Mason movies? Still love those. Some good humor and innuendo between Perry and Della in them. ;)

If you have a decent internet connection you can buy the season on iTunes now for $24.

I have not seen the movies, but I have gone back and started watching some of the original season from 1958 on CBSAA.

Thanks.

Ah cool. The original series is pretty good. Got the movies via Walmart for around $32. Should be around that via Amazon too. Well worth getting.

Heck yea... Just double checked and it's going for $21.99 on Amazon. Might be worth snapping it up.

Free HBO Max Trial lasts a week. That's more than enough time to watch all eight episodes.

I loved the casting of the McKeegans. Totally buy Lili and Tatiana as mother and daughter.

Initially, had no intention of watching the show, but then I started hearing about it and got interested enough to check it out. What a pleasant surprise.

I watched the old CBS show when I was a kid, but it was another of those shows I watched because it was all that was on. But I did get familiar with the main characters, Perry, Della, Drake, and Tragg(?).

Great show. Really enjoyed it. Loved the noir aspects and period setting. Tatiana was great. Liked what they did with Paul and Berger. Rhys as Perry was superb. I didn’t expect him to become an atty in the first season. But it worked out so well it didn’t bother me.

Bring on season 2.

They need to do an episode with Robert Sacchi as the guest star.

(For those who don't know about him, check out the 1980 film The Man with Bogart's Face....it's quite amazing.)
