When the Black Rock arrives at the island, there's a storm of Biblical propotions happening outside. But at the beginning of "The Incident" we see the ship arriving in calm waters and clear skies.

The writers have said that after that shot where the ship arrived in the calm waters that a big storm kicked up and drove the ship inland.

While they did go on record as saying that, it seems like they hadn't planned out this episode (6x09) when they filmed that scene with the calm waters.

We can also just assume that the ship in "The Incident" is another ship. Jacob said he brought people to the island before and at the time, ships were probably the only route.

Or, the ship at the beginning of "The Incident" could have been the Black Rock and could, theoretically have still been far enough away to still get caught in a storm that same night.[/QUOTE]

Or, Spock from Earth Prime, using red matter, ...oops..wrong JJ production..

Either way, again -- I'm not saying my theory IS what happened, I just like the idea of the ambiguity behind this. Saying it was the tidal wave strikes me as too mundane for this show. Then again, maybe that's precisely the point. I don't know.

Tidal waves aren't all that mundane when they launch a ship a mile inland without destroying the ship.

So as far as the cross goes, did Richard drop the necklace at the doctor's house in the Canary Islands?

Yes he did, he dropped it and never picked it back up.

No, he was wearing it in the prison cell

When the Doctor dismisses his meager attempts to pay for the medicine he does so by tossing the cross aside, Richard grovels over to it and picks it up pleading with the doctor to help grabbing him and... well, we know the rest.

Here's a question I have after watching this episode: Before MiB started impersonating Locke last season, which characters knew what the Smoke Monster really was, and that it could impersonate human beings?

Richard knew. As we see in this episode, he found out in 1867. Dogen knew, as we can gather from events earlier in the season. Widmore seems to have some idea, based on the preparations he's making on Hydra Island and his conversation w/ Sawyer.

But did Ben know? Based on his complete shock at MiB/Locke taking the form of the Smoke Monster in Jacob's sanctuary, and his question "What are you?", it would seem not. Does this make any sense? Ben was the freakin' leader of the Others for years. He's been with the Others for decades. This is some rather basic information about the Island that seems to not have been communicated even among the upper echelons of the Others.

Ben seemed to only know two things about the smoke monster. The fence kept it out and Ben could summon it if he wanted to. Clearly Richard should have told him, but it wouldn't be the first time people on the island didn't share info with each other.

Ben is a little crazy so I don't know if Richard should've told him.

Honestly, I wonder how much Richard trusted him (he certainly appeared to be with Juliette wanting a change). I think the flash sideways reflected his rise to power in this one. Rather than go through the rigorous process that Richard said was necessary for picking a leader, he acted politically. He gathered support from others, challenged Widmore's decisions, and deposed him based on his double life (and infidelities?). If he wasn't ever supposed to be the leader, I'd only trust him with necessary info, but not everything.

OK, I can see some logic behind Richard knowing more about Smokey than Ben. But Dogen seems to know an awful lot about Smokey too. Is there any logic behind him knowing too, and never having told the other Others before? And Widmore seems to have some kind of idea of what he's up against in Smokey when he comes back to the Island. He seems to know more about Smokey than Ben did. Does that make any sense?

It seems like, after the nature of Smokey is revealed to the audience, we have a bunch of characters who knew all along, but there's not much logic behind who knew and who didn't. Unfortunately, who knew what and when is something that we're probably never going to get a good explanation for, because I'm not sure that the writers have thought it through that carefully.

Widmore might have been a legit leader, so he would have been told (maybe even by Jacob, who knows?). Dogen was assigned to protect the temple from the smoke monster, wasn't he? Of course he'd know. Why he didn't tell, I'm not sure, but he seemed to keep himself very distant from everyone else and didn't say anything. His translator probably didn't ask and he wasn't going to speak in English to tell people.

I haven't read the rest of the thread, Ive just popped in to say what a frakking awesome episode. Nestor Carbonell rocks. Fabulous episode. Seemed to be on for about 5 minutes.

Excellent episode

I've been dying to see a pure Richard episode and now we know his story and the reason of the Island itself

:techman: I cannot wait.

Although 24 is limping to an end, I will still miss it, and Lost, when they finally leave the air this year. I have had more fun times that low times with these two shows.

Richard's episode was long over due and, I think, is one of the best episodes ever. And his wife was hot!!! I might sell my soul to get her back too!!!

I'm not reading through all these posts right now, so here are my random comments. Feel free to ignore or reply at your own discretion.

1) For a little while I was convinced they were really going with the "The Island is Hell" story. Now, it seems, the Island is a bottle of wine...full of EVIL!

2) MiB is evil. He was imprisoned on the Island, and Jacob appears to be his warden. What I want to know is: did Jacob bring MiB to the Island? Was there somebody around BEFORE Jacob? Did Jacob and MiB get to the Island at the same time? I have a feeling this is going to be Series Finale stuff.

3) A giant tidal wave explains how the Black Rock got to the middle of the Island, but it's kind of lame that that's how the statue got destroyed. I was hoping for something a little more awesome. I mean, the boat destroyed the statue, but the statue didn't seem to have any effect on the boat. It's more or less intact. And shouldn't all of that rocking and crashing have made the dynamite go BOOM?

4) How the hell do I still have no idea what is going on in this stupid show?

Jacob actually says that the Island represents the "cork" in his wine bottle analogy. Not the bottle.

I always expected to find out that the reason the ship was in the middle of the island was because the island appeared out of thin air right underneath it in the sea. I'm kind of disappointed it was just a big wave.

I don't disagree that there's probably not a whole lot of metal on the Black Rock, however look at how the electromagnetism started yanking any and every bit of metal it could during 'The Incident.' Even the key to the case the guns were in during season 2 when Jack was wandering around the hatch
Which was still after the pocket had be drilled into.

However, after all that time jumping, I can see how keeping track of the timeline now can be confusing.

I'm not confused, despite how confusing the time jumping may or may not have been. The island's electromagnetism has always been particularly strong (again I cite Jack and the key around his neck when Jack first stumbled in to the Hatch at the beginning of season 2) ... who is to say the electromagnetism wasn't stronger in 1867?

Further, the donkey wheel had to have been built by someone and the pocket of electromagnetism had to have been blocked off in that hidden chamber by someone. Is it possible that someone was Jacob? Richard? The Man in Black? Somebody else?

Either way, again -- I'm not saying my theory IS what happened, I just like the idea of the ambiguity behind this. Saying it was the tidal wave strikes me as too mundane for this show. Then again, maybe that's precisely the point. I don't know.
Understood.

Then again, maybe we're putting too much thought into something that doesn't need to be.

..its too late. NOW I'm thinking; who built the donkey wheel? They better explain that!!! And what were those drawing in that giant foot depicting? And who drew them..cant be the dudes from the slave ship..and it looks like Egytian stuff anyway. Maybe it will tie in with the STARGATE universe.
