Lets talk about Helen Noel

I had such a crush on her as a kid! Still do a little, smart, intelligent, strong willed and a total fox to boot :)

LOL on that steel bra. That must have been uncomfortable!

Yeah, practically out of an old Madonna video isn't it

Maybe in numbers, but not in position. Women are commonly court clerks, paralegals or junior lawyers, but female lawyesr rarely make "partner" in law firms and more rarely are judges. TV actually does a better job at making it look like women have an equal chance in a courtroom setting. Female lawyers who do well need to have strong personalities and be very aggressive.

I guess you're right! I heard on NPR that as many women went to law school as men, but looking at the stats, it seems there are twice as many practicing male attorneys as females.

My viewpoint is a little skewed, I guess. I cover two towns as a reporter--one of the city attorneys is male, one is female. My brother runs a law firm and all of his associates are female.

Well, I can only go from a female perspective, but she always had a "hard" look to me in her expression. There were pretty women (lots of them,) on the series, but I've always been puzzled why guys go ga-ga over her, unless it's the figure, which of course, is not something about which I care as a woman!

As a fan of Helen Noel I've spend quite a bit of time studying (someone had to do it :techman: ) why she is seemingly more attractive than other women of TOS even given that she isn't noticeably more beautiful than anyone else, nor is her uniform really any different than any other woman's on the Enterprise.

No, what it is isn't actually physical at all (well, at least not totally).

What it is is that she walks around knowing (assuming?) that everyone is looking at her, and take steps in her mannerisms to draw attention to herself.

As a contrast Uhura is just as beautiful and her uniform is just as revealing, but throughout the series she maintains herself in a professional manner which defuses (to some degree) the amount of sexual tension she has on those around her. In fact I'd say that most of the female members of the Enterprise crew do this which makes all of them less targets of unwanted attention.

But it would seem by Helen Noel's actions that she actively wants that attention and knows that she is getting it. And I'd point out that she does seem to know how to moderate it... she turns it on full blast around Kirk, tones it down a little around other males, and shuts it down nearly completely when another female enters the scene.

Basically, she seems to be acting out the philosophy given at the end of "Mudd's Women"... if you believe your attractive, others will too.

And here is the thing... I've seen Marianna Hill in other parts and she wasn't Helen Noel. So it doesn't seem to be the actress herself, but the character she was playing which was what had so much magnetism... at least for me.

And of course some helpful images...

Note the last image, when Kirk's attention is on another woman, and how her stance changes.

I think what you're saying is that Marianna was basically a very good actress. And I agree! I've seen her in numerous other roles too (been watching a lot of 60s TV on DVD lately), and in some it took me a while to recognize her - she's a chameleon.

One thing those pictures show is how shockingly low those uniforms were for women. Helen's skirt barely covers her behind. You can literally see her underwear as she walks.

Isn't there come kind of infamous pic where the skirt is pulled up the point we DO see her underwear?

Lovely features, proportioned perfectly (large, dark eyes not too close together or wide set; nose with thin bridge; full lips), face broadish and female, tapered neck, dark hair, petite and not a long, scrawny horse like Shaw or Chapel. Sonorous but feminine voice. Oh, and she's got a cute butt and big bazooms.

Actually, not quite -- there is a short-shorts pants thing worn under the skirt and over the regulation dark (mmmm... dark!) panty hose.

Yeah she's super attractive. I'd been saying it for years before even the internet, and all of my even somewhat Trek knowledgeable friends would be like who? they all went for the obvious ones like Uhura and and Rand. Not so much Chapel though; And honestly though she was very pretty, she always seemed kind of motherly to me. And of course we all agreed on Yvonne Craig's Orion slave girl. It's good to see that I've been justified all these years; Helen Noel is one of , if not THE hottest Trek chick ever. In my opinion, not just in Trek, but in my overall lifetime of television viewing in general; She's just that memorable. The only other thing I recall seeing Marianna Hill in was The Godfather Part II, where she popped up briefly as Fredo's crazy, drunk, wife. She was actually pretty good, but to me she'll always be Helen Noel the hot Starfleet doctor with a body that TV just doesn't make anymore.
