Law & Order General Discussion Thread

I have never heard even the slightest rumor of Meloni returning, although I'd welcome it if he did.

But not that way.

Remember when there was talk about a limited run return for the original L&O with Chris Noth, Sam Waterston and whoever else they could bring back? And then nothing.

Most of the new characters were well introduced. Only Amaro (Danny Pino) was a bit out of place for me. His face was too well-known (Cold Case, CSI NY....).

^ I don't remember that, although he did once say that he was concerned that the New York weather might be damaging his singing voice (Sorvino is an accomplished opera singer).

That said, I consider L&O's procedural aspect a strength. I actually liked the fact that the original L&O almost never got personal. In fact it was once described as "actor-proof", which I thought was a great compliment. :techman:

Agreed. But I can see how some actors might find that a bit limiting and possibly even mind-numbing. I recall hearing about how much Jerry Orbach liked shooting the first Homicide crossover episode because, instead of asking a bunch of witnesses a bunch of questions, he just got to spend the entire episode playing pool with Munch while he bemoaned the fact that Briscoe once slept with one of his ex-wives.

Something has been bugging me about the latest SVU ep (the one about boxing). Spoilers ahead...

When the detectives go to the boxing club to arrest Romeo (the owner), he is in a blazing row with Esperanza, one of his boxers. She ends up punching him in the face and he hits his head on the floor. Later on he dies in the hospital.

At first, Esperanza is charged with murder, but when the truth comes out - that her father had abused her as a child and Romeo brought it up to taunt her - the charge is reduced to assault and Esperanza will only serve two years, probably less.

The question is, why was Esperanza still charged? Couldn't she claim extreme emotional disturbance?

Was it a plea deal? Maybe they made a plea deal off screen?
I'm not sure how broadly the Extreme Emotional Disturbance can be applied. I thought it was generally used for cases like if someone was freshly exposed to some new trauma. A 3rd party referencing a known childhood trauma years after the fact would be pushing it. At some point, some degree of personal responsibility needs to take over. Besides, most of the stuff about the EED defense on Google talks about it being used to reduce charges from murder to manslaughter. Reducing the charge to a mere assault is actually far more lenient.

The boxing episode also had a Barba cameo! W00t!

(and no, that's not a spoiler. Barba isn't actually part of the plot. He just FaceTimes Olivia so he can wish her a happy birthday.)

And on a completely unrelated matter: Unfortunately, I just found out (via checking IMDB) that an upcoming episode involves the return of...

Rollins' sister.

One of longest running regulars is a ganster rapper. How do you watch the show at all?

Tutuola excluded. I'm not fond of Snoop Dog, that's all. Others dislike Rollins or her sister.

Her sister is weird, though. And Rollins had obviously a nasty childhood.

Ice-T has been awesome on the show. He's probably my favorite actor among the SVU cast. Sometimes it's hard to believe he wasn't in the first season.

I remember once somebody asked him how he approaches playing Fin, and he basically said he plays himself. Fin is Ice-T, but as a cop.

In promos for it on ion Television, he goes into it a little deeper. Apparently after he'd been given the first script he had a talk with the showrunner and the showrunner asked him "You don't really like cops, right? But you can agree that there's a need for them?" When he confirmed, the showrunner said "So play the kind of cop we need."

Which I guess is Ice-T with a badge.

Going back to the very first season of the original Law & Order, its usage of the extreme emotional disturbance defense has been cartoonishly silly at best, but more often utterly absurd and nonsensical.

Tangential to SVU, Ron McLarty, who appeared in multiple L&O Vanilla episodes as the scummy Judge William Wright, has died at 72, ostensibly due to complications from dementia.

Just watched the latest episode (the one about Big Pharma).

Has there EVER been a TV family more thoroughly fucked up than the Rollins clan?

- We see Kim again, who of course has a son whom she leaves with strangers so she can go and O.D.
- Now we get to meet Big Daddy as well, who drives all the way up from Georgia...supposedly to see the girls...only to promptly O.D. himself and wind up in the hospital.
- Then in the last scene, he disappears from said hospital without a word.
- And as we all know, Amanda's not exactly 100% either. She's got that good ol' gambling problem AND her relationships with men tend to be almost as toxic as Kim's.
- Although Amanda and Murphy did have reasonably good chemistry. If it's an excuse to bring back Donal Logue, I'm all for them getting back together.
- God help the grandchildren. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

SVU needs Brian Brophy as guest star - ASAP. A big chance for a comeback. It's never too late. With Brophy as laywer and Brent Spiner as suspect.

As to Amanda: she has her moments. Despite of her quirks I'm looking forward to the next season. The German fans have to wait, though. Currently they show older episodes......

Never saw an episode with Michelle Hurd..... That would be interesting!

I don't think The Broph acts anymore.

So it's not likely that he'll allow SVU to experience the awesomeness.

Oh well. If he was a lawyer, then Carisi would have to lose. And we don't want that, do we?

I guess you're right. On the other hand, even Jonathan Frakes came back.

Does Amanda McBroom still act? At least she would be a credible laywer. Just saw a pic of Brian Brophy and I cracked up.....
