Karl Urban on "Star Trek"

Admiral Buzzkill

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Full interview here.

I think the hardest part [of filming "Star Trek"] really is maintaining the level of security and secrecy that we have all been forced to adopt. I mean it's really kind of paranoid crazy, but sort of justified. We're not allowed to walk around in public in our costumes and we have to be herded around everywhere in these golf carts that are completely concealed and covered in black canvas. The security of it is immense. You feel your freedom is a big challenge

The film that we are making is very faithful in ways to the original series and the characters are the same archetypes which were established in the original series from the '60s. And I think the fact that Leonard Nimoy has chosen to reprise his role as Spock for the first time in 15 years is an incredible endorsement and he wouldn't be involved if he didn't believe in J.J. [Abrams] and the authenticity of the project. I'm just really excited about this film and it's amazing [how] every day someone new comes in and turns up on set, like we had Stephen Spielberg pop in yesterday. Everybody is thoroughly intrigued to see this one and it's going to be phenomenal. I think the teaser trailer comes out on the front of Cloverfield in January, so people will get their first kind of taste of the look and feel. And I think after Indiana Jones opens in May, this film is going to be the most highly anticipated film of 2008.

Of all of the "first meetings" that are potentially in this film, the only one I'm dying to see is the first meeting of McCoy and Spock.

I hadn't thought about 'first meetings' per se, but the adversarial relationship between Spock and McCoy is critical to get right, IMHO.

Very true. They are together for one reason: Kirk. They are hardly two people who would've formed any kind of relationship otherwise.
The mutual respect and friendship that developed between them took time. That respect may have developed during TOS, but I'd say a true friendship wasn't there even by then.

What makes it even harder is in their own respective ways, neither of the two is easy to know or get along with.

I wouldn't be surprised if they are not be very friendly at all to each other in XI.

I can just imagine it. McCoy has been working all week on a really funny joke. He tells it to Spock. Spock doesn't laugh, doesn't giggle, doesn't flex a single facial muscle just arches an eyebrow in dry contempt and observes: 'Fascinating'.

It's the beginning of a beautiful hatred. :D

But in all seriousness, this is one of the most important character dynamics of the movie. If Abrams can sell me Spock and McCoy doing their verbal sparring, then he's sold me on the picture.

The more I keep reading, the more intrigued I become and eager to see this movie next year. I'm still trying to picture Urban as McCoy in my head, but he's a good actor so I kinda believe he's going to pull it off.

I guess with all this security, we're not likely to see much more in the way of pix from the set. I can't wait to see the Enterprise interiors.

We have actors, producers, directors, everyone under the sun clearly stating that "Star Trek" is NEW, but faithful to the same archetypes of the original in ways... Yet a lot of you believe it's a prequel.

IT'S A REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT. REBOOT.

Got it?

(I bet some people might actually crap their pants or slit their wrists when they discover how wrong they were about the whole thing. MANY are expecting a polished up version of Star Trek New Voyages. ROFL!!!!!! ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ROFL!!!!)

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So... what are you saying, then? :p

Actually every writer I've heard talk has said it fits into "existing continuity", at least that's what Roberto Orci has always left me thinking.

In any event, we'll find out soon enough...

This is getting dangerously close to trolling if you ask me.

They had a photo of him in the new issue of SciFi Channel Magazine where there looked like there could be a passing resemblance between him and De Kelley. As long as he can play the character right, I'm not that concerned about appearance.

Matt, you are standing on the edge of a warning for trolling here.

I want you to knock off this harassment of other posters about this 'reboot' thing, like YESTERDAY.

I get it. We ALL get it. In fact, everyone in the English-speaking world gets it: You think it will be a reboot.

But yours is not the only opinion that matters around here. And if you continue acting like it *is* the only opinion that matters, appropriate action will be taken.

Reboot? Revamp? Renewal? Call it what you will - I'm just looking forward to a good movie. What else matters at the end of the day?
