Just finished the series...

There's another sadness about this episode of which I didn't think at the time of my original answer.

When TNG came to an end, we knew the film was on the way. Although TOS ended...prematurely...there was still the space for further stories which we eventually got in the films. For DS9 there was no such thing. The serialisation meant the "arc" of DS9 was closed.

DS9 is my favourite Star Trek and I was devastated by watching the last episode and knowing that was it.

(And yes, the surrogate child was Kirayoshi: Thanks to Tosk for answering kkt 's query)
If I write something of my own which is related to DS9, I will create a scenario in which most of the characters are back on the station in one way or another.

Odo is a problem, I must come up with a good reason for having him back. And then Jadzia, of course which is the real problem. As it is, I can't come up with a good solution for her.

Sisko can return from the wormhole to take command on the station, O'Brien gets bored on Earth and want to be back on the station again, Garak can be a Cardassian Ambassador to the Federation and Bajor and being stationed on the station and the Gowron who was killed off by Worf was actually a Cardassian spy who was altered to look like Gowron, Like Kira was in Second Skin and Seska was on Voyager. The real Gowron escaped from a Cardassian prison at the end of the war and is now back as Chancellor for the Klingon Empire.

Nope. TUC and GEN share the infamous shot of the Bird of Prey of course, but the running Klingon is not in TUC.
As I wrote it I thought am I thinking of the ship exploding...

Although why is it infamous... blatant reuse?

I feel I know the answer. I don't think it was in Sacrifice of Angels... this is going to bug me.

I agree. DS9 has always been my favorite as well, and I still get sad watching that episode. But I believe that one of the reasons it is my favorite series is that the characters and stories feel real. And a bittersweet ending which combines victory with loss seems fitting.
