Just finished the series...

The fire caves are about 10 seconds away from DS9 for a ship with warp drive and a transporter. The heroes tended to make the trip to Bajor at impulse speed for most of the show, because they were unusually reluctant to use warp speed within a star system, but you can get there much quicker.

Sure but he managed to walk or run from Vic Fontaine's to the dock, board a runabout, exit the station, then warp to the fire caves, land, exit the runabout and run to gul dukat in the amount of time it took dukat to speak a sentence, lol

Nothing like being the CO and devine to cut through the departure and arrival paperwork.

What You Leave Behind works a lot better if you assume/pretend that the scenes set in the Fire Caves are not being presented chronologically in sync with the rest of the episode (until the final one when Sisko arrives).

Otherwise Dukat and Winn spent a loooong time down there. Hope they brought a lot of food and water.

It is a very sad episode and it ends with two people looking out of a window. One has just lost his father: the other, her partner and surrogate child.

Whilst it may be sad for Julian, it is a normal part of working life that colleagues move on. At least it is possible to keep in touch despite the distance, and with O'Brien at Star Fleet HQ, every chance they will meet up again.

Personally, I prefer finales where Our Heroes are going to Live Happily Ever After...or, at least, where they are still going to be doing what they do so well with the people to whom we have grown attached.

You consider Odo to be Kira's surrogate child? I'm not sure I see them that way.
There are certainly some things about humanoid manners and communication that Odo doesn't understand very well...

A while back I would have made it sadder and had Garak disappear and never be seen again, and Sisko would have just straight died and never been part-Prophet or whatever he is with a happy ending in heaven. I don't know if I feel the same way now though.
Also a random question about the space battle scenes: would you rather it be as is with the reuse of VFX or less space battles and more added in filmed scenes with characters? I don't want to shit on the show, I just always hated reused VFX.

What we left behind was so sad, especially for Julian. He lost his two closest friends and will probably rarely see them again.

Jake lost his dad for god knows how long.

Even Quark was sad.

But how the heck did sisko get to the fire cave in like 30 seconds, lol
I have mixed emotions about that episode.

It was nice to see the war coming to an end with The Dominion defeated and Cardassia liberated.

But sad to see the good, old gang break up.

They should have done as in TNG, let the gang remain on the station as they were. Then we could have had books with future adventures for them and maybe a movie too.

As it is, after watching the last episode as I did in November this year, then it's always a relief to watch the episode Emissary at Christmas Eve to begin the cycle again! :techman:

There's another sadness about this episode of which I didn't think at the time of my original answer.

When TNG came to an end, we knew the film was on the way. Although TOS ended...prematurely...there was still the space for further stories which we eventually got in the films. For DS9 there was no such thing. The serialisation meant the "arc" of DS9 was closed.

DS9 is my favourite Star Trek and I was devastated by watching the last episode and knowing that was it.

(And yes, the surrogate child was Kirayoshi: Thanks to Tosk for answering kkt 's query)

Well... Sisko did use the Rio Grande, the longest-lasting runabout in the whole series, AND this was the same cruiser that crashed landed on an M-Class planet in snowy weather in "The Accent" so I'm sure Sisko choose the Rio Grande for a reason. 😀

"What You Leave Behind" is probably my favourite Star Trek finale in the whole franchise. But it ended on a sad note with Jake losing his father and all, some leaving while others stay behind.

I know a lot of people seem to have a beef with the scene of Sisko's final showdown with Dukat at the fire caves but i actually liked that scene. It was a bit entertaining, actually! 😂 Could it have been better? Oh, yes. But the dialogue for me makes it fun to watch. Also, I feel for Marc. In an outtake, Avery ended up decking Marc for real (accidentally) while they were filming it. I feel for both of them l, actually.
