Jeux olympiques de Paris 2024 - Olympic games 2024 in Paris

Absolutely stoked for Ariarne Titmus. Another fantastic swim from her against top-drawer competition. Great stuff from our relay women, too, and some terrific results elsewhere. Nice start for Australia.

I´m happy for Elijah Winnington winning a medal. I´ve heard he almost quit swimming.

Yeah, that was a brilliant effort from him. He was really disappointed with his performances at Tokyo so great to see him go so well.

Hoping for better things from the Matildas too after the heavy loss to Germany. That was pretty disappointing (if not entirely unexpected).

A new national record for Cedric Buessing in the 400 IM, entering the final with Leon Marchand as a favorite. The pool isn´t fast, though. So it´s all about medals and not records. To me, it is a good thing when it is all about a race and not world record pace everyone seemed to be fussing about.

Good start yesterday for the French olympic team with rugby 7 gold medal. I am glad that Antoine Dupont didn't give up on the 6 Nations tournament this year for nothing.
Judo and fencing are still great medal providers for us.

Watching the US Men's Basketball Team vs. Serbia.

On a different note, I've been seeing Tom Daley's post on social media "Six Boys, Five Rings" is getting quite a buzz. Am I missing something here? I don't follow the innuendos. If anyone cares to PM, that would be helpful.

Most cringeworthy moment so far: the reporters asked swimmer Isabel Gose about her ex-boyfriend´s performance over 400m freestyle without regard to her own performance in exactly the same event.

And the Church is not amused about the Opening Ceremony. Even Trump added his two cents.....

I was driving home last night flipping through the stations and heard the local conservative talk show host railing against the opening ceremony, saying that the Olympics are supposed to be inclusive and by having drag queens in the ceremony it excluded others that might be better suited for inclusion. And I thought to myself, "That's some circular logic there." It's also, IMO, incredibly ironic for him to say that, considering he's a conservative Jewish homosexual.

Daniel Wiffen brought the 800m freestyle home - in front of Bobby Finke and Gregorio Paltrinieri. Congrats to the Irishman for this feat and a good time despite of a slow pool!

I remember in past Olympics, there were always issues with the NBC coverage of the games, at least in the U.S. These seem to be the recurring ones.

  • Limited coverage or sports variety: Certain competitions like archery, weightlifting, shooting, et al are hardly covered.
  • Delayed telecast: Although there are more channels now showing "live" Olympic sports, major events like swimming or gymnastics aren't showcased live on primetime TV, and for obvious reasons too, due to the time zone differences.
  • Too U.S.-centric: If you're looking for a match between Argentina vs. Germany, that's not something you'd easily find on NBC or any of its affiliates. Gone are the days when they featured medal ceremonies for many countries (or any country?).
  • Sloppy coverage: NBC has gotten better, but before, their programming used to be "all over the place." Swimming heats for 45 minutes, followed by beach volleyball semifinals, then onto balance beam qualifications, none of which showed any medal events. Why bother?

The coverage here - disappointingly but unsurprisingly - has been every bit as jingoistic / Australia-centric as ever. I'm particularly annoyed at the lack of gymnastics replays (the time difference is particularly unkind to viewers in my part of the world). When a GOAT-level person like Simone Biles is competing I don't care where they're from. I want to see it. And it would be great to see our competitors, too. Oh, well.

On another note entirely, I suppose by now everyone is aware of this absolutely astonishing photo taken during the surfing competition. Just brilliant.

It's not a good party if the church is not annoyed !

I saw archery yesterday. Despite the very hot weather, that was a pleasant afternoon and the Esplanade des Invalides is really a great place.

Monday was probably the best I have seen from the French olympic team since I follow the games with 8 medals. I know that medal count will be very different once athletic starts but I enjoy the moment. Nothing better than playing at home !

While I was writing that, Léon Marchand won a 2nd gold medal !

Bonus : taken on monday after archery. That's the weather we didn't have at the opening ceremony...

Leon Marchand shattered the field over 200m breaststroke after winning also 200m fly. And Pan Zhanle shattered is own world record over 100m freestyle despite an underwhelming heat. So much for a slow pool. 6th place for the German Josha Salchow with national record and 1,4 seconds behind. Bronze medal for Isabel Gose over 1500m freestyle behind Queen Ledecky (this event must be especially painfull). Another silver for Anastasiia Kirpichnichova swimming for France. The crowd is quite happy.

How good is Leon Marchand?? Brilliant stuff. No doubt our media will go on about O'Callaghan and Jack "failing" in the 100 free but unfortunately that's what they do - claim our athletes are world-beaters, then kick them when they don't win everything in sight.

Really pleased for Stubblety-Cook, Chalmers, Diehm and Smith. Disappointed for the Matildas but also not really surprised. We badly need a change of manager, and the sooner the better.

Don't know what else I can say about Jessica Fox. She's unreal. Good on her. (Shame she was interviewed later by one of the most utterly obnoxious figures in Australia, though.)
