Jennifer Lien Arrested Again?

IS this a resurrected thread or is she really in trouble again? I can't tell.

Jason
This is a resurrected thread from September 2019.

I must admit that every time I see a thread like this resurrect or I see the name Jennifer Lien show up in the title of a new thread, then I get this bad feeling coming over me. :(

She was so beautiful and talented on Voyager. I really loved her character. I really hope her life gets better and she finds peace and happiness.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with Kes or Seven but about an once talented actress who is now ruining her life.

I've seen that happen to some of my rock favorites during the years and it really brings me down. :weep:
It had to have destroyed her to be replaced with another actress, a far more impressive one as well.

I think she had substance abuse issues even when on Voyager. Their was rumors. What I think happened is she started out as a child actor. Something people forget and we know the issues that happen often with child actors. She was also a attractive young lady in Hollywood and we know what kind of issues that might bring in place that doesn't always treat women with respect. Being fired must have sucked but actors get fired all the time and often move on to other roles. I don't think that usually ruins their lives. Something more I suspect is/was going on that we don't know about in her life.

I agree with the first art of your sentence but not the second. Lien was as good as Ryan.

King Daniel Beyond wrote:
Lien never got a chance to shine. Other than "Warlord" where she was fantastic, Kes was as bland and milquetoast as they come.

I have to disagree here. Kes is a fascinating character in many aspects.

If you want "bland and milquetoast", I can recommend Hoshi Sato in "Enterprise" plus every character in "Discovery".

Rumors that were never confirmed.
If they had been true, it would all have showed up when her problems with the law started in 2012. A lot of people would have showed up with stories about possble problems during her time on Voyager but nobody have, despite on some forumes where anonymous people post rumors.

Everybody did know that Shannen Doherty had been a pain in the a** for the whole cast during her time on Beverly Hills 902 10 and that she was kicked out because of that.

When Gary Dourdan "left" CSI, his drug problems became known to everyone.

Not to mention Charlie Sheen's problems.

But no rumors about Lien having problems during her time on Voyager have ever been confirmed.

The writing was far more impressive for Seven of Nine than Kes. They created a character that sounded good on a casting sheet, but had no true idea of what to do with her past the pilot.

Tough to blame that on Lien.
If they "didn't know what to do with the character, then they weren't doing their job and should have been fired.

There are some really good Voyager books where Kes really is shining and if an amateur like me can come up with good Kes stories, then I expect the same from professional writers.

Note also that Kes never was supposed to be the main character of the series while Seven was added to be just that, therefore the writing was different for her.

Seven was also Berman's dream and Braga's "Mary Sue", therefore the more inspired writing for her.

I'm wondering on what grounds we are accepting the "much more impressive" assessment

She is a real life, "This is you.. And this is you on drugs" commercial.

D.A.R.E. should hire her to do talks at high schools.

Honestly, the character didn't seem all that impressive from the get go. To me, was bland and uninspired (don't come at me with knives, @Lynx), it was a clear indication they were out of ideas and throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck. The Doctor was in the same boat, until they came up with the Mobile Emitter gimmick to get him out of sickbay and interacting with other characters.

It wasn't any fault of Lien's, she was just the one who ended up with the part.

Just from my perspective, I found Seven of Nine the far more interesting character. Kes never made an impression on me, outside of "Warlord", and that wasn't really "Kes", it was a dead general in her body.

Seven was supposed to be imposing, imperious and, well, sexy. That's the character being played compared to the much more timid and mousy Kes.

My query is how @BorgTheory made the leap to comparing the performers and came up with Ryan being "much more impressive" than Lien.

Definitely two different characters, with two different goals in mind behind them, but hard not to compare when one was essentially traded for the other.
