Jaffa body armour

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
I've recently been wondering that whenever we see Jaffa being fired upon by our SG teams we always see sparks flying off there chest plates. Is this supposed to be ricochet fire, meaning that not all bullets penetrate the armour or do the bullets penetrate (which is obvious by the fact that Jaffa are seen falling over dead from being shot at) and the sparks are some sign of this?

well it wouldn't be fun if we just saw the guys stagger around and fall over, the sparks are there to illustrate that they're being shot
and I think those costumes may have been expensive to make, so they didn't want to use squibs every time, thus the sparks
I dunno . . . that's my best guess

SG-1 used the P-90. If you've ever played COD4 then you know how weak the individual shots are from that gun. I'd say the sparks were the ammo literally shattering on impact, only penetrating through continuous pounding.

What are you talking about? The P-90 is clearly the Tau'ri's most powerful and unstoppable weapon. Didn't you watch The Warrior? O'Neill clearly demonstrates that it's a weapon of war, meant to kill the enemy. Honestly, I can't believe anyone who watches Stargate would question the unquestionable superiority of the P-90.

I'm going to assume that is sarcasm. Any gun is a weapon of war-the P-90 is a firehose that any five-year old could wield, designed to be easy to use and carry but not necessarily hard-hitting. We're not talking about a .44 Magnum here, y'know?

It's too bad that SG1 doesn't have a handy five-year-old. :techman: Maybe the Jaffa should use .44 Magnums that way they could hit what they aim at.

I would have to watch the episode again, but did the M-16 fire in the pilot episode kill the Jaffa guys when Apophis first came through the gate to Earth? Was there a mention of Armor piercing rounds or anything like that a little later, back when they used MP5s?

No, it didn't kill them. It tickled-if you watch, you can see them rolling around on the ground laughing.

The P90 uses specially designed armour piercing bullets (in reality!) which shouldn't have too much trouble with the Jaffa armour.
The sparks are a dramatic thing more than anything else, I'd say. As someone said upthread, a way to show being shot without doing bloody squibs on their costumes all the time.

I wouldn't use either Stargate or Call of Duty (or any Video Game) as any sort of authority on weapons. In real life a BB Gun can better incapacitate a human than some ridiculous weapons in video games.

Yeah. I spend a lot of time emptying entire clips into the enemies in "Black" without causing much damage.

I was just thinking that guys with rayguns should have some good armor. The mini-series V had the badguys bulletproof at first until they came up with special bullets.

I doubt Jaffa body armour is THAT good at stopping bullets anyway. It's not like there were many worlds out there that had been allowed to develop chemically propelled balistic weapons in the first place. Instead, the armor was more than likely great for keeping folks with swords, arrows and pitchforks at bay while crafting a fearsome appearance thanks to the disproportionately large helmets they always wore. At least until they didn't wear them anymore. :)

The serpent helmets didn't look that great to me. I have no fear of intergalactic bobbleheads. The horus and jackal Jaffa on the other hand... pure awesome.

Anyways, the P-90's firepower is determined by the plot, and whether or not you're holding two of them.

I definitely didn't get the impression that they could move fast in those helmets. The movie characters must have moved pretty fast to take out an entire special forces team. Of course the US team was lead by French Stewart, so maybe that explains it.

Pretty sure they killed one Jaffa in that scene, since they had a body to show Jack when they got him back into the SGC. They did fire a lot before they dropped that one guard.
