In The Pale Moonlight

"In The Pale Moonlight" might just be Garak's best episode, let alone one of the best DS9 episode made!

Your thoughts?

I know I'm pretty amped everytime I watch it...those eyes!

Well Garak set a pretty high bar for him to top in that episode being he thoroughly manipulated everyone from Sisko to the whole Romulan Empire to his will.

In my opinion? Not just one of the best DS9 episodes, but one of the best Trek episodes in general.

Brooks and Robinson played rather well off of each other.

My only regret is there was never a follow up to this episode. Maybe the Romulans finding out. :O

But yes, really good episode. Even Quark had a shining moment in it. :P

Incredible episode. The fact that it pisses off the "purists" gives me great satisfaction. ;)

I forget, is the line "In the Pale Moonlight" traced back only to Batman 1989, or did it exist before that?

Garak would leave no trace. If the Romulans find out it's because Sisko and/or Starfleet slipped.

Sisko really took it from everyone in this episode. Not only is he wrestling his conscience but you have Dax reminding him how everyone's dying, Quark gleefully rubbing in that he sold out, Bashir lecturing him about morality, and Garak sinisterly pointing out he's lost his self respect.

I agree it's a one of the best Trek episode.
Everyone who is a fan of Garak should read "A stitch in time".

BTW R. Star your avatar is great... and a little bit scary :)

I remember when I was first making my way through DS9 when I got it on DVDs (my first exposure to the series, when I was in High School), somehow I skipped over 'In the Pale Moonlight,' but as I was watching it for the first time, I couldn't believe I had missed it the first time going through the DVD set and it quickly became one of my favorite episodes of DS9

Great episode, and one of the most memorable of ST. It features a lot of good Garak, but it is less of a "Garak episode" than the others. In the others, the other characters are along for the ride. This episode is focused on Sisko-his decisions, his inactions, his complacency, and his shortcuts.

In this episode Sisko is the puppet and Garak, the puppeteer.

I do wonder how much Starfleet Command knew about what really happened. In the episode, Sisko said he had to clear Garak's plan with Command.

The plan sort of fails when the rod doesn't hold up to scrutiny. Then Garak goes James Bond on their asses.

Did Sisko tell Starfleet Command what Garak did? Because if he didn't, someone at Starfleet Command must have been really suspicious.

"Hmmm....the Dominion blew up the senator's shuttle? He was carrying information the Dominion was going to invade Romulus. So...it was true afterall..............................uh......... Open a channel to Deep Space 9...."

Oh for sure about Sisko or Starfleet being the ones that let the Romulans know.

Haha, good point. Sisko did get it from everyone in this episode.

Not just one of the best DS9 episodes, but one of the best Trek episodes in general.

If it is one of the best DS9 episodes, it is naturally one of the best in Trek, since DS9 is Best Trek.

Haha. I stand corrected! :D :D :D

Not much argument here. I think it is the best episode of the series, and certainly one of the greatest Trek episodes, period.

According to the title, it is Siski who would "dance with the Devil [Garak, though it could also be something oblique and conceptual] in the pale moonlight." It is a study of whether or not someone can remain innocent while flirting with political diabolism.

Well Batman floods the Google results, so it may trace back to there. Memory Alpha seems to suggest that it's based on the line. Though the phrasing certainly sounds like it could have come from a classical reference.

^Separately, "dancing with the devil" and "pale moonlight" are images that have been around for long time. The phrase might just have been a happy marriage.

A Stitch in Time is epic and really fills in all of Garak's back story... written by no one more qualified than Andrew J. Robinson himself.

Glad you like the Avatar, it was from When it Rains/Tacking into the Wind, I forgot which one, when Garak's standing in the shadows telling Kira to kill Rusot before he kills her. All with a pleasant smile on his face. ;)

OMG! It's on my Kindle ready for tomorrow's indulgent reading!!! I hope the lies are true!
