There's been some good discussion about uniforms for the next Trek series, but it strikes me that human, but not-uniformed, fashion will also be present and will shape the look of the show. How should it be presented?
The precedent is largely set by a given show's costume designer. Over the years, we've had civilian fashion that ranges from basically off-the-rack contemporary, to uncomfortably futuristic. Some general examples demonstrative of each series are below.
They range from Kirk's various duds in The Final Frontier, which may as well have been 1989 jeans and shirts, to McCoy's 1970s disco hippie outfit in TMP; we also have a wide range of outfits including various iterations of TNG space pyjamas, Sisko's African-inspired collection, and IMO the worst offenders with VOY's space formalwear that never really looked good or comfortable...
What do you think? Should future human fashion look like it'd never ever be made, or that it was bought at the local Macy's?
