How much of Shea is left?

All of the multipurpose stadiums simply sucked. RFK, Shea, Three Rivers, the Vet, Riverfront Stadium, Busch Memorial Stadium, Atlanta-Fulton County, the Astrodome, Qualcomm Stadium, the Kingdome, Baltimore Memorial Stadium, hell even Candlestick Park...all ugly, inefficient pieces of SHITE. Proof positive that multipurpose stadiums don't work. The only ones that haven't been bulldozed to the ground have been converted into football only stadiums, and even some of them are due for replacement (such as Qualcomm and Candlestick).

You are sadly mistaken here. Two cookie cutters still exist on the West Coast. The Big A is now baseball only, but Oakland Alameda County Stadium still hosts both the A's and the Raiders.

The Big A? Doesn't count. Angel Stadium is not a cookie cutter. It was built for only baseball. It was 'kludged' to support football when the Rams moved in (and the resulting product was without a doubt the UGLIEST stadium I have ever seen. Don't believe me? Look at THIS! ) , but after they moved *out* again, all the alterations were demolished. You can't even tell that it ever hosted football. So as far as I'm concerned, it never did. :p

To qualify as a cookie cutter, a stadium has to have been expressly built for both baseball and football. So Angel Stadium doesn't count (see above), and neither do Dolphin Stadium or the Metrodome; in those cases, they were only built for football, and baseball was never meant to be played there. They had to have a baseball diamond 'forced' into them. So they're not cookie cutters either. Fortunately they will soon be replaced as well (Twins move out of the Metrodome in '10, Marlins out of Dolphin Stadium in '12).

Bump:

Looks like Shea will be completely gone by February 18th. It's now 1 AM and all that's left - according to stadiumpage.com - is one set of ramps. In less than a day (heck, probably by lunchtime), the entire stadium will be no more.

Wow they've been updating that thread a lot lately. At this rate they probably can get it graded, paved, and striped by Opening Day, which is still nearly 2 months away until the home opener.

This is really heartbreaking for longtime Mets fans.

Here's a shot I took during Game 2 of the '06 NLCS in all its glory. Post 'em if you got 'em.

Well, stadiumpage.com is down because of heavy site traffic, but every bit of info I've heard suggests that Shea is now completely gone. All demolished.

Now of course I have a lot of good memories of games there. I am a Mets fan and I always enjoyed the opportunity to see them play. But I can't say that I'm really nostalgic for old parks in general - I'm too excited about Citi Field. Shea, after all, was a cookie cutter, so I am not too disappointed to see it go. It *needed* to go, since the very concept of a multipurpose stadium has been proven unworkable.

I might feel different if I was a New Yorker and was able to see all the games. But as it stands, I'm more excited about the future.

Apparently there are certain features of Shea that will be 'marked' in the parking lot: home plate, pitcher's mound and bases. linky

Has anyone here ever been to Shea for a football game?

My Mom used to go to a bunch of games back in the 60s. She didn't grow up too far from there and would just go with a group of college buddies.

Shea's all gone. What a sad day for Mets fans. :( Citi Field just doesn't have the same ring to it!

I found solace last night in the bottom of a bottle of vodka and 3 tickets to Citi 4/25 against the Nats.

Poor Mr. Met! :(

I see StadiumPage.com has gone dormant now that they leveled the final section.

Anyone got any updates on how the cleanup and evenatually paving is going?

Stadiumpage.com has some more images up. They've pretty much got the debris cleared out, except for some scattered bits. Looks like the paving could come within a week.

Yeah it looks like they are spreading subbase material on there as opposed to removing debris.

Paving will depend mainly on the weather cooperating. Rule of thumb is that the temperature needs to be 40 and rising otherwise the asphalt cools too quickly and doesn't bond together well. If its anything like MA right now, its also probably covered in snow!

Once you actually get a paver on site and start work, you can blow through a lot like that in a couple of days. Paving is quick, its the prep work.

I can see this being totally done by opening day. I figured demo would take longer but don't have a good feel for structural work as compared to site.

Bump:

The subway and LIRR stations will change their names, but not like we thought they would. The MTA wanted money from the Mets to include the name Citi Field! linky

So apparently both stations will be called Mets/Willets Point.

I woulda done the same thing. Why should they give some company free publicity.

Everybody who walks into the ballpark - or even rides the 7 train *past* it - will see the name anyway, so I don't see why putting it on the subway station just a few feet away will get Citigroup any *more* publicity.
