How many newbies will last?

RoJoHen

Awesome

Since the new Trek movie came out, there have been a lot of new posters at the TrekBBS. However, we must face facts. Not all of these posters will stick around.

What is the average turnover for TrekBBS postership?

Don't have a clue, but I see less then 20% percent of noobies will stay longer then a year.:vulcan:

While I can't with any certainty answer those questions, I do find it interesting to postulate that this influx (I cannot attest to it, as I've just returned to the forums today) stems more from the movie being positively received and a considerable success rather than the fact that it's a new Trek movie. I guess this in itself should not be surprising. However, it may indicate that a lot of the new posters are people who never previously considered themselves ardent enough to join a Trek community, but are now excited about the franchise due to the new film.

The only other time a new Star Trek movie came out while these boards were in existence was when Star Trek Nemesis was released back in 2002. While there was considerably more activity in the TNG forum, and subsequently the newly created Movies forum, around the time of the release, it was primarily from regular posters. The release of Nemesis, as far as I can recall, didn't cause a significant spike in new posters. It did, however, create a lot of negative sentiment (as mod of the TNG forum at the time, I can attest to that).

As for the average turnover for TrekBBS postership... that number would be skewed by those few who never leave.. :p

I'm hoping the newbies (1) will become curious about the various trek TV series, (2) will give them a try, and (3) will become hooked! :)

I came here because of Nemesis.

In fact, I just watched it again this afternoon.

Waiting for the rental DVD as usual for this new one too.

Why all the newbie hate? :( Everyone reading this message was such a poster, at some point in the past. Even the highest-mighty Fleet Admiral and all that.

No hate. Just curiosity. It stands to reason that not all of these people will stick around.

^ Agree with RoJoHen, I actually hope they stick around. God knows we need new blood to counteract against certain posters. I name no names. :)

I bet that when we were newbies, they said the same thing about us. And we're still here, aren't we?
When I was a newbie, there were only, like, 100 active posters. In fact, I was in the Top 50 within a month.

There are just a lot more people these days. The more newbies there are, the greater the likelihood that more of them won't last.

Also, I didn't join because I was suddenly inspired by a brand new Star Trek project. I just kind of stumbled in here one day.

You can see within the Trek XI forum that some of the new folk post their review in the review thread and nothing else, but others start replying to other threads within that forum. I don't know how many (if any) have started investigating the rest of the BBS, but I'd say those people who are active in a lot of the theads in Trek XI will probably stay awhile.
