How about a remake of 'The Final Countdown' ?

The new USS Enterprise CVN-80 is scheduled to be ready in 2025. Here is an artist's concept:

Maybe by then Captain James Kirk of the USS Zumwalt will transfer over. Wouldn't that be a trip. Although, the Zumwalt is quite a ship in her own right:

Anyhow, maybe whatever ship could go into the future instead of back to Pearl Harbor in 1941. Considering what's been going on with Russia lately, North Korea, etc, it seems like there are many possibilities for a very good new story.

Won't happen. Carrier commands go to naval aviators or NFOs (backseaters) pursuant to US law and this Kirk is a surface warfare officer, so he couldn't ever be the Enterprise's skipper anyways. See 10 USC 5942(a)(1): To be eligible to command an aircraft carrier or an aircraft tender, an officer must be an officer in the line of the Navy who is designated as a naval aviator or naval flight officer and who is otherwise qualified.

As for remaking Final Countdown, I don't think any other point in history would have quite the same impact as Pearl Harbor. It was a singular event where one highly advanced carrier (whose crew knew what was happening) could make a *significant* effect on the outcome and history as we know it. The only other single event in history that I can think of that has had as much of an effect is 9/11, and I don't think having a carrier air wing shooting down civilian planes would go over too well.

Interesting details about the rules governing who can skipper a carrier. Thanks.

If a new movie were set in the future, they could do virtually anything with a story. Going back in time would not work as well. Agreed there.

I used to imagine a remake with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen taking over their fathers' roles, but Michael's a little old and Charlie's a drugged up asshat, so...

I was obsessed with that movie as a kid! I would be interested to see a version where they actually fight and defeat the enemy, then go back to an altered future.

They actually did filming on several different carriers in the making of the movie. I had a half-brother who was an AT2 on the Ike (USS Dwight D Eisenhower CVN-69) at the time and he told about the film crew coming aboard. The surreal hoopla was such that everyone was cracking jokes like "This is the USS Eisenhower, where the hell are WE ?!? "

I wouldn't mind a remake/update in this case. I might have to dig out the original for a rewatch.

ETA, yeah, losing the Toms:( When I first saw the film as a youngster, the first jet model kit I got was the Tomcat and that was due to this film.

They don't use Tomcats anymore?!?! Now I feel old.
It will be 10 years ago as of September 22nd. Personally, I don't mind if they used the Super Hornet for an updated movie, seeing as I worked as a designer on that! :D

So what flies off carriers nowadays? Those young whipper snapper F-22s? I didn't even know those existed until I saw them in the Transformers movie.

Now I have that damn Europe song in my head...

I really need to watch this again, I haven't seen it since I was a kid.

I also really liked the movie, prob why i really enjoyed the Axis of Time series by James Birmingham where a multinational fleet from the 2020s travels back in time to just before Midway and is stranded and after already heavily altering the timeline by arriving the past plays out much differently.

From the Navy:
The typical air wing aboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier usually contains four FA-18 squadrons, one S-3 squadron, one EA-6B squadron, one E-2C squadron, and one helicopter squadron.

So, mostly just Hornets. Someday they should also get the F-35C, but that remains to be seen. And if you also include the amphibious assault ships, they carry AV-8B Harriers.

Perhaps Michael could still reprise his dad's character, but this time as an Admiral?

As for Martin Sheen's character...there's always Emilio Estevez.

Other ideas:

- Avery Brooks as Dan Thurman, the XO
(or perhaps the Captain in the remake, if Douglas plays the admiral)

- George Clooney as CDR Richard Owens, the CAG
(they could still have James Farentino return as the older Owens, aka "Richard Tideman")

I'd see a modern remake with Rhinos or the new Lightnings, if made a few years from now. I'd NOT want to see a remake if certain powers have their way and a future carrier just has meat popsicles servicing a bunch of drones. Kinda pointless, really.
