ok the episode where the klingon is aboard Kirk's enterprise and says something along the lines that ... "A madman with a knife can kill some fifty people in one night on a good run..," is that the 'exact' quote because I want to use it in my signature and change the siggy I have right now... I will be back-- but I will also now go to the main site to skewer*sp* the trek library as well ;:: ;)

It was, officially: "Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us. All we ask is that you let us do it Kahless's way."

Wow! Right at the tip of my tongue...

"A running man may slit 4,000 throats in a single night.", but something about that still doesn't seem quite right. I still prefer Kang's, "Only a fool fights in a burning house.".

Four thousand throats may be cut in one night by a running man.
-- Klingon Soldier, "Day of the Dove", stardate unknown

from this page. No promises as to accuracy, just found it in a Google search for "throats cut running man quote".

  • Klingon: qaStaHvIS wa' ram loS SaD Hugh SIjlaH qetbogh loD
  • Transliteration: As a single night continues to happen, a man who is running can slit four thousand throats.
yes a Klingon proverb sweet

"Four thousand throats may be cut in one night by a running man."
- Kang's officer, quoting a Klingon proverb

*Puts Klingon Text in his sig*

Yeah. I have not seen this episode yet, so I can't tell you. But I think it is a cool quote.

Here's a pretty accurate transcript of Day of the Dove. The full dialog is:

KANG: When I take this ship, I'll have Kirk's head stuffed and hung on his cabin wall.
MARA: They will kill us before we can act.
KANG: No, they wish to question us, learn our strength, our plans. They never will.
MARA: We are forty against four hundred.
KLINGON: Four thousand throats may be cut in one night by a running man.
KANG: Patience. Vigilance. They will make a mistake. Capture of the Enterprise will give us knowledge to end this war quickly.

Great quote.

For those that don't know...there is an excellent book called "Quotable Star Trek" by Jill Sherwin. Its awesome!

A great quote, but I've thought about it over the years...Why "4000 throats"? Not 400, not 10,000. Seems an odd number unless there is historic or specific precedence. Then again, maybe the 4000 goes back to the prior "40 vs. 400" line in the conversation. And if that's the case, perhaps this line is not a Klingon proverb verbatim at all.The discussion about 40 vs. 400 and then 4000 throats may have been this Klingon's way of saying, "Even if they outnumber us a hundred times, we can still kick their asses."But rather than a general "we Klingons rule" comment, he spoke more descriptively, not actually quoting a direct Klingon proverb. Unless he's the one who just made it up on the spot.Hmm.
what is happening with my formatting???

Contrast with the Romulan quote: "Two all-beef patties, special sauce, pickles, lettuce, and a cloaking device on a sesame seed bun."

Aaaand representing the Vulcans,
T'Pau: Where's the beef?

ACTUAL QUOTE:

Remember what Kahless once said: He who smelt it, dishonors his lineage for six generations.
