If that's true, then apparently, CBS' definition of "advertising" includes outright lying to potential viewers for publicity and monetary gain.
There are only two possibilities here: either the showrunner is lying through his teeth or the new Klingons are a demonization and smear campaign of a United States party or faction by an opposition that is also within the United States.
What I'm saying is, that publicity is everything. Even with a name like Star Trek, they still have to spend megabucks on advertising. In fact, the bigger the name, the more marketing(it seems).
If a studio has a popular brand, with wide recognition, they will confidently invest all the more to get the word out to more people. There is less risk and more to gain.
As for the Klingons being Americans, you can blame the blog media for taking a passing statement out of context, and using it to headline articles. That then results in the already polarized fanbase either heralding it on one side, or using it to "pile on" grievances on the other.
I mean, it's possible it was calculated. So much is. Often, every word in an interview is carefully deliberate, knowing full well how the media will use it.
And sometimes negative PR is still good PR. Sometimes divisive attention, handled correctly, will drive sales.
For our sakes as simple viewers, we can rest easy that the Klingons aren't meant to be Americans.
