First Frontier

One of my favorites. Star Trek and dinosaurs -- what's not to love? And since it was cowritten by an actual paleontologist, it's about as close as Trek fiction ever comes to being hard science fiction. Of course, the paleontology is a little bit out of date now, since we now know that raptor dinosaurs and other theropods had feathers, and the leading theory is that the asteroid impact wasn't the sole cause of the mass extinction but rather the final killing blow in a long process of decline. But I don't think either of those things critically affects the story.

It is a bit implausible that the Enterprise just happened to be subject to just the right freak conditions to protect it from the timeline shift when it occurred; but First Contact used the same contrivance, so I can live with it.

Loved it. Long, meaty story, from a SF writer I trust, working with a scientist! I don't remember too many details of it now (sometimes an indication of bad memories), but I recall enjoying it very much at the time.

I wonder if it influenced VOY's "Distant Origin" in any way? I also liked that episode, and it would be fun to see these stories blended in some way.

I had looked forward to this one for a very long time and then found it disappointing.

At this point though, I couldn't exactly tell you what bothered me so much about it. I think it was a culmination of several little things. Mostly what I remember is how I rolled my eyes at the depiction of Kirk, valiantly doing everything from fighting dinosaurs to writing a shopping list through the excruciating pain of this debilitating illness he caught. And, as they were depicted in the book, I don't recall thinking that the Clan could have plausibly gotten as far as they did society-wise.

It was... interesting, if difficult to properly get into though I do find that I enjoyed the "Distant Origin" storyline from Voyager more.

Speaking of the Voth, Christopher, I remember you mentioning that you might have had plans to bring them in a book or something. What happened to that? Just saying in case I need to keep a look out for it :rommie:

All I'll say is, keep a look out for it.

Not neccissarily, the ways things are crossing over now they could easily pop up in TNG, or Titan or SCE or one of the other series.
