I think the draw for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa deserves its own thread and in just over 11 hours the draw will start (5:30pm GMT I believe I read). Incase you live in a cave or are Irish and now despise football, a quick reminder of the 32 teams who have made it to the world cup (31 did it fairly) :p and what group pot they are in...

The worst group England could get is probably...

England/France/South Korea/Ivory Coast

though I wouldn't mind skipping the Aussies or Portugal either. Personally I think fate will give us Portugal though I would love this group...

England/North Korea/Algeria/Slovakia

I think the South Americans are much stronger than the Africans; I would rather take Ivory Coast than Uruguay for example and I'm also guessing that Mexico and USA are far stronger than all others in pot 2 (I would be surprised if South Korea specifically isn't totally overrated). So the most difficult draw for England imo would be
England/Mexico/Chile/Serbia.
In that group I really wouldn't bet on England to make it through, in most other combinations they are the probably favourites.

Am not scared of USA infact would love to meet them in the WC sort of Football vs. Soccer :p nor do I fear Mexico that much. However South Americans yes avoid please ;)

Not that I expect it to happen, but I'd laugh my ass off if the US and England go up against each other and the US wins. :D

Don't care who we get really. As Beckham said last night, if you want to win the World Cup then eventually you need to be beating the top teams...

That said getting the USA and France would be funny...and I really hope fate gives us Argentina/Maradona at some point...

I'm taking it its 8 groups of four with the top two from each comprising the last 16?

Yes, people say that, but it's really not true at all, because unless a team is really dominating nobody is ever that much of a favourite to win over anyone else in the World Cup.
So luck of the draw und slightly weaker opposition in the beginning can significantly improve your chances of making it deep in the competition. Once you're in the knock out stage anything is possible - it's only three matches to the final...

Yeah you can go further, Germany in 2002 being a prime example, but though they reached the finals they were so outclassed by Brazil that they never had a hope of winning.

Winning breeds confidence, and winning against better teams breeds more confidence. The last thing I want is for England to become complacant because they have an easy group.

Maybe so, but just getting to the finale or even semifinals would be a success already for all but a few of the teams (obviously Brasilians wouldn't be happy with 4th place).

I don't see England going further than Semi finals, this is the first tourney since I began watching England in the summer of 1996 that I said pre tournament WE CANNOT WIN IT. Most likely last 8 but a little luck we can make it to last 4. I see Euro 2012 as possibly our best chance under Fabio depending on how a few players progress and how our oldies stay fit.

Actually I feel more confident going into this tournament than I have in a long time. Semi finals, at least!

I don't know much about the teams, but a South Africa, Korea dpr and Algeria grouping sounds most favourable for Serbia.

I don't care against who the French team will lose (because i don't expect more from tehm). I just hope we won't have a France vs Algeria because there is more than sport in a match like that and it can really turn bad.

Actually I believe that Serbia is one of the teams in the competition this time that doesn't even need any favours (and Algeria and South Africa cannot be in the same group anyway).

Well, at the very least, I think we'd be pretty fucked in a group with Brazil, Mexico, and say, Nigeria, as far as being able to achieve 2nd in group. If that one's even possible. I was under the impression that a group of any four teams, with one from each pot, was a possibility.

Yes, there are only two exception, Brazil and Argentina can't get a South American team and South Africa can't get an African team from pot 3.

And I think Serbia is strong enough this time to actually make a challenge for the title this year, but we'll see. I think it's time for a Balkan team to finally win this thing. ;)

I'm not getting my hopes up. It's almost tradition for Serbia to raise hell in qualifiers, and then fall apart and suck completely in the actual tournament. :)

Croatia was 3rd in 1998, and Yugoslavia tied the States for 3rd in the first ever world cup (they didn't play a bronze medal match at the time), so it's not like the Balkans have absolutely no history of success at this thing. Is Austria geographically considered part of that region?

Is Austria geographically considered part of that region?

That's debatable. Most Austrians would probably consider it an insult to be included in the Balkans.
But I've always a soft spot for Yugoslavia, I'm rooting for all the national teams from down there. ;)
