About 20 years ago, before Memory Alpha, there were only a handful of Star Trek websites and side views of ships were usually scans from the Encyclopedia, but the Excelsior for some reason was no where to be found! So I drew one for the Ex Astris Scientia website Starships page.
Over the years I've seen my Excelsior pop up all over the internet in many comparison charts and graphics, but it slowly began to bug me how many inaccuracies it had, which became more apparent as huge amounts of reference material became available (Original image from around 2002 below).
Below you can see my newer version, I've based my initial side view on the research of Praetor (which I've followed and agreed with for the most part), with tweaks made using overlays of the studio models. I wanted to go with a color palette that matched the ship diagrams used in the old Encyclopedia illustrations. I thought it would be fun to see the comparison from the first version I drew over 20 years ago!
I've also saved out high res versions which you can find on my Dropbox here: Dropbox Download
