Ever felt unsafe in an "enemy" team's stadium?

My point was that throwing rocks, trying to assault and storm the opponent's fan blocks causing a panic that killed dozens of people can't really be called "child play".

If you're only talking about current Celtic/Rangers and not about 80's hooliganism then just disregard what I said but it wasn't clear at all.

Alright, I agree. Of course nobody with any sense wants the hooliganism back.

Actually it's about tribalism, not religion. They sing sectarian songs but that's about all it has to do with 'religion'.

Ok, yeah, but the point still stands that the violence in Glasgow isn't just about football club rivalry, wheras the rampant hooliganism in England two or three decades ago was. In Glasgow, the violence has a deeper history, and football is just an outlet for that.

The Glasgow Police and City Cooncil

That typo just put the lyrics to the Lord Rockingham's XI song Hoots Mon in my head... "There's a moose loose aboot this hoose".

Yeah and now we have the vuvuzela.

I've been watching the women's World Cup (I've actually been gaining some interest in soccer, yet the MLS is not world class like our major sports here, so it's tough to get into other than internationally), and there are no vuvuzelas.

I loved them last year, they add a great ambient element to the game. I toot mine when the US ladies score, but I miss the hum.

Easy to be world class at American Football and Baseball when you're basically the only ones playing it.

^ Don't know I'd go so far as to say "most of," but there's a significant proportion, yes.

^I was playing along with your joke there.

SEC Football - Isn't that where that wackjob poisoned all the trees at the other team's campus?

:alienblush: Ah. And yup, an Alabama nutter poisoned 100+-year old oaks at Auburn's campus.

All these Baseball and American Football rivalries pale into utter insignificance when compared to the dark years of British football hooliganism in the 80's & 90's.

The rivalries pale or the level of violence pales? But... yeah.

Baseball is very popular in Latin America and Asia. Why it hasn't caught on in Europe is as tough to explain as to why soccer hasn't caught on here. Something gets lost in the translation I guess.

Both. While the violence that occured a few decades ago isn't as prevailant anymore (although there are still some organised football Firms who are happy to meet up and fight each other on match day), the deep-seated rivalries between clubs are still there, even if it mostly manifests itself in songs and chants these days. Fans of one club still hate fans of a rival club, it just doesn't erupt in violence anywhere near as often, or anywhere near the scale it used to, anymore. Although if a Liverpudlian started shouting his mouth off about United in Manchester city centre on a Saturday night, he's likely to get a kicking, and I'd expect the same would be the case if the roles were reversed. Not that I condone that kind of behaviour, but it is what it is. If there's one thing the majority of the English public are passionate about, it's their football team.

Soccer is infinitely more popular in the USA than baseball is in Europe, both as an active and as a spectator sport. Baseball is nothing here, nobody watches it and even fewer people play it. Even american football is much more popular (and growing) and basketball is on a whole other level of course. If baseball wasn't apparently so popular in Latin America I would say it may be a dying sport.

It does well in Asia as well. May not be expanding much, but baseball isn't exactly on it's way out, either.

I hope you're not trying to compare it to the popularity of football.

If you look at the most viewed programs every year, the Superbowl wins out time and again. Football is very, very popular.

And I say this while watching the Wolrd Cup. There's a place for any sport you like, it's just that I'm no more inclined to watch your country's mot popular sport than you are mine. One man's quirky novelty sport is another's diehard tradition.

Agreed. Which is why Roger Goodell (NFL commish) & co. have a massive hard-on for that regular season game in London every year.

I also agree hoops has really gone global probably more than any sport. The days of the 92 Dream Team winning by 75 are long gone.

Yeah, why do I feel like MLB has trotted out this gem at least a half-dozen times, and been completely shot down every time? Since this one was a bump, I even checked to see if I'd shot him down this time, but must have missed this thread last time...

Yeah, relax, you'll be fine. Unless you act like a douche, in which case, you're in danger of heckling and/or asskicking whether you're at the park, in a bar, whatever :techman:

I am actually very excited about this trip. Believe it or not, I liked Fenway Park (and Boston in general) a lot when I was there last. I think it will be a lot of fun.

At least that damn T station is finally finished.

I said "football". Not American Football.

My point was that football (soccer) is a whole lot more popular than baseball (which really is nothing here) and even American Football has a niche appeal in most parts of the world compared to football.

Do people watch the superbowl once a year? Sure, many do (although I personally don't know anybody who does) for the show aspect but do they play it? It has a very limited player base outside the US.

I couldn't even tell you if any of our TV stations regularly shows NFL games. There isn't even a national american football league in my country that gets any attention (at least I never heard of one) and I think the NFL Europe folded a couple of years ago?

When I was in high school our football team went from 0-9-1 in my junior year to 9-1 in my senior year. We went down to Washington High, before George McKenna, who was our assistant principle at the time went and changed the name to Washington Preparatory as seen in a Denzal Washington starring role TV movie.

Back to topic we went and defeated the then perennial power on their field and the band, football team and cheerleaders buses were stoned on the way out. We had a School District Police and Sheriffs escort to the City of Inglewood border before we turned north back towards home. Two years before there was a riot on our home field after a Jefferson game.

After high school the only "enemy" field I have been to was at Stanford and we partied together the night before
