Enemy Mine

Captain
What a class film. I remember when I was a kid thinking I had watched something which was much deeper than your standard action/sci fi flick. The message is something I think which is relevant in all time periods. Ok I accept it is very cheesy in places but still a classic. The fact that the pace is contemplative adds to the brilliance, nothing is rushed. I'd like to see more films, especially in the sci fi genre, like this nowadays.

Its a great movie! Louise Gossette JR. really sold himself as an alien in that world. Dennis Quaid was marvelous as well. I do not understand why it didn't reach classic status as other movies of that time did.

I remember a couple things about this movie:

1. It had some of the worst special effects I've ever seen.

2. My wife, to this day, still claims that it is the worst movie of all time, even though there are some other strong contenders (Battlefield Earth, anyone?). Anyway, that's her contention, not mine. I found a lot to like in this movie.

"Zammis get four, five?"

Loved it, one of my favourite childhood movies. I'm gunna have to watch it again soon.

"Dis is mah left fooot, dis is mah right fooot and da is your uuugly head!"

I think it's a decent science fiction film. It's not great--a few visual effects don't work, but most do. The biggest flaw is that Quaid and Gossett learn each others languages far too quickly.

Awesome movie with a great story (and copied several times in Star Trek ;))

Davidge: "If one receives evil from another, let one not do evil in return. Rather, let him extend love to the enemy, that love might unite them." I've heard all this before... in the human Taalmaan.
Jerry: Of course you have. Truth is truth.

^^
Copied twice, by my memory, on Star Trek the Next Generation as 'The Enemy' and on Enterprise as 'Dawn.' Are there more examples that I'm missing? The Unas storyline (there was even an episode called Enemy Mine!) on Stargate SG-1 was similar as well.

Well, yeah, that's the film origin of the tale, but I think most science fiction television is making reference to Enemy Mine.

A lot of those 'mid-range' budget movies of that era were pretty cool.

Some folks might call them cheesy or dated, but they holds up pretty well.

I mean compared to crap like the Black Hole----

insane science, sterotypical villains, 'cute' robot----- ugh.

Just watched this again the other day. Great film.

Although, yeah, the space SFX are insanely bad. I had totally forgotten. It's like BSG TOS bad.

The makeup and creature effects, by contrast, are pretty good, particularly for the time.

It's a decent, under-sung little movie. Very well-intentioned, brilliantly played by both leads.

Why Quaid never became a huge star in the vein of Ford, Gibson, Hanks or Cruise totally baffles me.

I haven't seen it in years but I have very fond memories of this film. It does have a very nice story and I remember the acting being very strong. Ironically, it's a scifi film and I barely remember the effects at all. Most of my memories are of the performances of the two leads - which I guess says it all eh?

Which is what Science Fiction should be all about.. examining human condition in a future setting.

We have just been raised that huge special effects are automatically expected with a Scifi movie when in reality those are just future adventure movies.

Quaid did a lot of decent mid-budget films around then. Dreamscape is another closet favorite of mine.

Another variation on the "2 men on an island" theme was the only Galactica 1980 episode that was partially worth watching, "The Return of Starbuck".

I liked Alien Mine better though. :)
