Deforrest Kelley in Gennerations

jeddah

Ensign
Newbie
I read recently that De Kelley did not "turn down" his part in Gennerations as was reported at the time, but could not get insurance cover as he was ill at the time of shooting. Would have been great to see him one more time. Does anyone know if this is true?

I don't know. But I thought illness was what nearly derailed him appearing in Star Trek V?

I dunno about insurance, but I've definitely read somewhere that it was mostly his health that kept him from doing it.

what exactly were his health issues?

Cause of death: stomach cancer. Described as a long, lingering illness.

But he was also very thin, and a heavy smoker. I seem to recall he had some breathing issues earlier?

hmmm. Why would those health issues affect insurance for a movie though?

it's not like he had bad legs and was being asked to do stunts or something.

If he had the equivalent of Koenig's part, all he'd have to do is stand around and recite dialogue.

^ I think it's more like insurance for the studio to prevent monetary losses in case one of their lead actors is unable to complete a project. Like with most forms of insurance, there's a point at which the risk is too great to gamble.

You do learn something new every day. I never knew it was health issues.

So I guess it would have been Kirk, McCoy , and Scotty than? It would have made a huge difference. Scotty substituting for Spock on technical issues worked. But Checkov in sickbay felt forced. Also I think McCoy's emotional reaction to Kirk's apparent death would have made the scene much better.

That would've given Kirk's line... "I gave this clock to Bones" inside the Nexus, more meaning. Maybe even a whole earlier scene like the birthday one in Wrath of Khan, where Bones convinces Kirk to attend the launch ceremony. There's something like that in J.M. Dillard's novelisation (I think).

Possibly explains why Kelley got to attend the premiere and joked about wanting to see if Shatner could still act. He was disappointed at not being able to do that on set, during no doubt multiple outtakes.

No, it was written as Kirk, Spock and McCoy. And Chekov's daughter was on the Enterprise-B.

Spock's lines were given, essentially unchanged to Scotty. McCoy's to Chekov. And Chekov's daughter became Sulu's daughter.

Oh, I knew who it was written for. Just that before this I had thought that Deforest Kelly and Leonard Nimoy turned it down together. It would have been unique to see Kirk and McCoy without Spock.

Essentially, they did. Each actor's agent would have advised separate turn-downs, though. It's not as if they were ever a united front, nor that there was a rewrite that anticipated McCoy but not Nimoy.

Has the script with Spock and McCoy ever been posted?

I believe I recall seeing it somewhere.

It's almost exactly the same wording. That's why Scotty sounds so scientific about the Nexus effects, and why Chekov goes charging off to sickbay and enlisting reporters to be medics.

^Unique apart from most of The Search for Spock?!

And unique apart from most of TOS episode "A Private Little War".

"Most of" means he does appear! ;)

The scripted version would have had more ties with TOS previous known connections with TNG. Both Spock and McCoy lived to interact with members the Enterprise D.

Chekov seems out of place. Uhura would have been better suited to help in sickbay. More than anything I am sure Nichelle Nichols and Whoopi Goldberg would have loved to be in a scene together. Whoopi has said that Nichelle was an inspiration to her as a child.

But it didn't.

Both Spock and McCoy lived to interact with members the Enterprise D.

But "Generations didn't explore that aspect. It's precisely why Nimoy turned down the role. "Unification, Part II" had put Spock into the thick of the action and provided cross-pollination advertising for ST VI, which he had produced. "Unification, Part I" had a cameo of Spock only to split the salary budget across two episodes and make him more affordable. Kelley did McCoy in "Farpoint" for scale, as a special favour to DC Fontana and the fans.

No script put Spock or McCoy into the heart of the action.
