Constitution Class Size(And size of Starships in General)

The saucer windows have always bugged me, and it really doesn't seem plausible to me that they would build all those windows at that height. TOS Connie has the same problem too, though it is less obvious as there are not those stripes at the saucer rim. And of course Franz Joseph famously just downscaled pretty much everything by 20% to make stuff fit in his blueprints. Shuttle bays, TMP cargo deck and reck deck, these just do not fit. The ships would work better if they were 20 to 33% larger. Of course in Kelvinprise scales you run in problems too, as you will either need to have huge amounts of nothing between the decks, or exactly every other deck bizarrely missing all the windows.
It does appear in all the semi-canon material we have on the Kelvinprise that the saucer decks end before the reach the saucer edge and only about two make it to the rim and they have windows that are deck-height. It seems like there’s space between the decks for equipment and such.

That's a great visualisation of the interior. While the angle is useful on the upper saucer rim windows though, wouldn't it present a problem on the lower rim? They are already high, so the extra 6" may be too much for some of the shorter crew!
It's not as bad as it looks. I'm 6ft exactly and my eye level is pretty much in the middle of the window in VR. I'm making a couple of internal rooms with some TMP sofas for scale, so I'll make another quick VR video later to demonstrate.

Great job. The TMP Enterprise is my favourite ship by a mile. Some people felt they dialled back the magical technology too much but for me they made it feel like something that could actually exist. A lot more thought went into the evolution of the Connie than the Kelvin timeline version being built on the ground .

Haven't had much spare time over the past 24hrs, but here's the window situation on my 305m build;

That's good, but at least a foot lower than the round window seen on the Rec Deck (top left of the picture)

The Rec Deck is going to be a fun challenge, but what I notice straight away is that the balcony floor thickness looks much thinner than my 40cm decks. I think what I'm going to do is have a step going down onto the balcony, which will raise the effective porthole height by another 20cm.

The Rec Deck is considerably larger than the hull dimensions anyway, so it's going to take a lot of artistic licence to make it fit.

The enormous size of the Reck Deck (along with the twin turboshafts which are highly reminiscent of those on the Bridge) make we wonder if the entire room isn't in fact inboard and closer to the centreline than we have been led to believe.
Are those 8 square things really viewports, or simply hi-res video display screens? The Officer's lounnge (where Spock meets up with Kirk and McCoy) has 2 "viewports" in the size and style of the Rec Deck ones. This means that (if the Reck Deck is in the traditional aft-starboard location) the officer's lounge ones would have to be video screens, since there are no other corresponding viewports on the ship. So, if those two can be video screens, why can't the eight on the Rec Deck?
I know it's not what the designers had in mind, but it does allow us to make sense of the otherwise impossibility of this 2½ storey cavernous cabin! :techman:

I really do not understand this desire to bend over backwards until you turn into pretzel just to keep the usually assumed size. 'These windows are not windows, they're scanners,' 'these other windows are not windows, they're viewscreens,' 'and these windows have been built on crotch height because of reasons...' Why not just accept the obvious: the ship has to be bigger?

The trouble with upscaling the TMP Enterprise is that because of the airlocks (which have a known size) there is a definite limit about how large it can go. The interior shots of the Cargo Deck mean that the ship has to be at least 355 metres long, but even that means expanding a 6'6" airlock door into a 7'6" door. There comes a point where you can't squint such changes away

Sure. But I don't think that point is 20 percent size increase.

Great work, but to me this just proves that the ship has to be bigger. There was some rumours floating about that Discovery's Enterprise is scaled to be about 450 metres. That seems a tad excessive to me, but at least a rec deck like this would finally fit in its depicted size!

It seems to be true. Discoverse Enterprise is a lot bigger. Now, I am not sure there is much point of trying to maintain continuity at this point, but if we want to do so, then we must assume that TMP enterprise is this big as well...

At that point we also must go with the bigger size estimates for Excelsior. Size calculations based on windows make that ship at least 600 metres long, which would go well with this new, bigger size of Constitution.

I must admit I'd like the Enterprise to be larger, it would make everything so much easier. I guess you just have to pick a scale that works for you, be it the external shots or the internal sets. What I will probably do after I've finished my 305m build, is scale the whole thing up to 350m and release two versions. Like, the 305m is a typo and someone transposed the 0 and 5 :P

Here's how I'm squeezing the rec deck into 305m. It's going to be a lot smaller than what we see on screen (like 50% smaller), but I'm hoping it will still be plausible.

This is great work. I went nuts as a young fan trying to squeeze the Rec Deck shown in Mr Scott's Guide into the official dimensions. It's extremely cathartic to see how it would look in "real life"
