Captain Matthews instead of Miguel Prado (Dexter)

(Spoilers for those who haven't seen Season 3 of Dexter)

Imagine Miguel Prado never existed and instead of him, it was Captain Matthews who was being Dexter's new friend and confidante in Season 3 who discovers Dexter's secret, turns out to being fine with it with a willingness to help Dexter with his work, and is later revealed to be a manipulative bastard. How that would have changed things on the show?

I've been halfways expecting Matthews to confess to Dex that he's always known what he's been up to. Matthews might have realized what Harry's project was, way back when, and implicitly approved. Maybe he made sure Dex got a job at the Miami PD?

The difference would be that Matthews would be far too slick to ever trip up the way Prado did.

^ That would be a really interesting twist, actually. Especially if Deb finds out the truth in season 5, as many people have theorized. Would make for a very interesting dynamic if she went to him and he was all, "Yup, I know, no big deal."

If they take Dex out of action, Miami's crime rate will skyrocket. I'm sure Matthews would do whatever was necessary to prevent everyone from realizing that the brilliance of Miami's police force is not what has been tamping down the murder rate all those years...
