Captain Kirk's Command Chair project. Ent 1701 TOS

I hope the mods dont mind me doing this 'cross-posting, but...

My thread appeals to more in this forum (TOS) than maybe the art forum, as i suspect not many members on the board as a whole venture into the art forum.

By doing this i can get some advice and tips etc on my work from Fellow TOS fans themselves.

As this has a TOS theme, i thought id post it in here, if the mods dont mind.

If you do, just delete my post, no worries, been there, done that.

The McMaster blueprints im working from. The entire project is to scale with these drawings.

After getting all of that moddelling right, today i started on the inner seat of the chair.

I have yet to model the arm rests and computer interfaces.

Any comments are welcome.

Hey guys, sorry its been a while, ive had mega bad flu.

Heres a little update i did the other day.
not much but ive started on the computer interfaces and the arm rests.

Hopefully, later tonight ill have a bigger update.

Im planning to build the com station to put behind the chair aswel, but thats a way off yet.

armpan2.jpg

Started on the intercom aswel. not perfect i know, but its still being built.

As always, all comments/suggestions welcome.

All the best.

Looks great! As I understand it the armrest controls could vary from episode to episode, so if you want, it might be cool to model all the "armrest options" as swapable components so you can render variations of the chair "as seen in" such-and-such episode.

The actual chair is in the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle and has the left armrest from "Turnabout Intruder" and the right armrest customized by the person who possessed the chair before Paul Allen bought it.

Maybe jazz it up a little, with some speakers in the headrest or an Ipod jack on the arm console, for when Kirk wants to jam out to some Rigelian porno music.

And I insist on some switches for the hydraulics. Bounce, bounce, bounce!

Joe, willing to start an on-line petition if he has to . . .

And/or to fanwank a holo-transmitter into the arm so as to render all the armrest variations as holoprojections.

Thats sort of my plan, actually.

In the original thread, it was suggested that the panels be flush to the arm, and be lcars type displays that alter given the ships condition/alert status etc.

Also, given that TOS also had touch screen buttons aswel as physical ones, this idea is completely plausible as to have appeared in TOS in a later season if they had budget increases.

Right, onto business...

switch.jpg

Heres a render of all computer interfaces together.

left.jpg

Heres the upper left interface, according to blueprints and photo records from TOS that are clear enough.

leftrockers.jpg

Heres the lower left rocker function switches. Again, as close to photos and blueprints as poss.

lefty.jpg

Heres the entire left arm so far, all possitioned in correct places as per the drawings.

Now, this idea im kinda toying with, labelled buttons, by using the lcars type layout switching, ive envissioned the computer automatically projecting these onto the buttons when, alert status is changed etc.

These have been labled as they are designated in the blueprints as standard, so i thought id put them there.

Nice work Classic Fan. And I certainly have no objection to this being posted here.

I will put in my usual plug for the Trek Art forum though. There's a lot of really cool TOS-related stuff in there on a pretty regular basis. I'd encourage everyone here to take look at Trek Art now and then.

Having "chair adjust" and "separate hull" that close to each other is just asking for trouble!

I was just thinking that. Imagine Kirk's face as he prepares to recline late into his shift, then BOOM! Everyone on the bridge looks over at the captain, who's red as a beet. The only sound heard it a tiny "Whoopsie..." from the center chair. :guffaw:

:D

I thought it was bad enough accidently tripping the silent alarm in the bank when I was down with my Dad who was working late :o ;)

LOL.

Yeah, a sudden clunk heard all around the ship, some poor guy looks out of his cabin window to see the saucer drift off...

"Shiiiit, i left the deck 3 galley stove on." LOL.

Anyway, heres a little update. Remember the lcars conversation?

toslcars.jpg

toslcars2.jpg

Ive put together a little test panel, like a multi function display on the upper right arm.

Looks cool.

I wouldn't go adding text to the buttons. Just have'em plain, like in the show.

That said, those panels just look so FFFFFFFing sa-hweeeeeet.

Great work.

Re: Captain Kirk's Command Chair. 2nd Pilot Episode Edition

^^^ Im keeping all details as they were in the show and as close to the originals as possible. Im altering them in future renders to see what they might have looked like.

Ok, been watching my TOS dvds again.

Watched the two pilots for research on the differences in the chair.

Ive decided to give the WNMHGB (2nd pilot) chair a go, alter the details a little, add details etc.

Heres a screencapture of the end of the episode, where Kirk makes his log entry. Its the clearest of the chair i could get in the episode. the details are not that clear but clear enough for a little guess work. LOL.

Also note, that in this pilot, the right arm panel has touch buttons, later to be replaced in the series with physical push buttons.

PDVD_173.jpg

Now, i dont know what the black plaque is, it was never disclosed in the episode, maybe some blueprints or fan made stuff. Im guessing that its an eqipment reference number. Like the little red labels seen in 24th century Trek (See art of Star Trek book) on all the equipment.

After this 2nd pilot, however, we get the commonly used panels as i have rendered above, the gooseneck viewers are never seen again on the Enterprise, re-used for other alien sets/ships etc, but never on a starfleet vessle.

Heres my go at re-creating the right arm, note though, that the left arm was left entirely untouched and, well, almost entirely un-used in the whole series. the right arm is where all the modifications etc took place.

wnmhgb3.jpg

I have got the plaque, new (or old) interface, data tape reader and gooseneck viewer. The viewer is not complete yet, though, its not proportioned correctly. i did that bit in a hurry.

wnmhgb2.jpg

Left view with basic gooseneck detail. Also note the lack of a comm unit, the comm unit was in the gooseneck, i guess that the production guys decided having everything flush on the arm looked best, and least datable, as the series went on.

wn.jpg

Heres a long left shot, note the left panel remains unchanged, the function select rocker switches, however, are also absent.

Any comments welcome as always.

Gotta go, taking the other half out for valentines night *MONEY MAKING SHAM*

Re: Captain Kirk's Command Chair. 2nd Pilot Episode Edition

What I like is the way you handled the "3C 42" sign.

When I first saw the simulation, I noticed the sign wasn't quite even with the top of the chair arm. Looked like a mistake.

Then I saw the photo, and realized it really was that way.

EXCELLENT duplication!

Re: Captain Kirk's Command Chair. 2nd Pilot Episode Edition

Yeah, the chair, if you look at my early renders, tips slightly backward at an angle. its almost undetectable to the naked eye until you put something on it, like the 3C 42 sign, and then you can see the angle of the chair.

Just a quick one...

compare.jpg

Heres a render i did this morning.

Just a basic comparrison of the two. nothing special.

Building the inner command level. Chair/helm et al.

hmm, my thread seems to be dieing a horrible, horrible rigelian fever-ish death, here.

but ill keep posting anyway. keep it alive.

As the title suggests, ive started building my around the command area of the bridge. chair/helm et al.

Its not complete or refined as yet, but i have put the carpet on the chair plinth that was seen in latter episodes.

I havnt built the rear part of the command platform as yet, but hopefully later tonight ill have build the rest and, also, at least the astrogator.

rears.jpg

This image makes the platform look really short, but it isnt, i promise, its the angle of the render.

twins.jpg

Heres the two chairs again, both as they appeared onscreen. this is a render i did becuase the above looked short, this render shows the most common filming angle (front, right of the set.) Also note, no carpet on the 2nd pilot's plinth.
