Bride of Chaotica!, Love it or Hate it?

I personally loved it. Everything about it.

Especially the fact that it wasn't the holodeck's fault that it malfunctioned, it was the photonic life forms.

And I loved Janeway/Mulgrew as Arachnia, pure genius! Even Tom knew so! :bolian:

And I won't be doing this for many more episodes. Actually this and Equinox are it. Probably. My favorite and the one episode that is worse than Threshold in my book.

I liked it, was one of the funnier epis. I always like seeing Tom as Proton anyway. Slightly goofy but you are right. Janeway rocked!

Na, the best was the dress - or the face the captain made when she looked at the pad that Tom gave her. And the fingernails...

Liked it. Wouldn't want too much Captain Proton, though. But it had the two funniest lines ever:

"Let me get this straight: trans-dimensional aliens have mistaken your Captain Proton simulation for reality."
"Yes ma'am."
"And now an armed conflict has broken out between these aliens, and Chaotica's holographic army."
"Yes ma'am. His army of evil."

- Janeway and Paris

I loved the way Paris subtlety and quietly corrected her by adding the totally unnecessary line of "His army of evil."

Then, the EMH described his "performance" as " President of Earth" as "unimpeachable.". A witty double-entendre, for it was around the time of the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings. (I'm *not* trying to be political here — I just find it very funny.) :guffaw:

Even my non-Trekkie brother and mother can appreciate those lines (they usually tune out when I mention Trek.).

Plus, IIRC, the actors had a blast doing it. A nice way to lighten up the mostly heavy season five (Dark Frontier, Timeless, Gravity, Equinox, Juggernaught, Warhead, 30 Days, Once Upon a Time, Infinite Regress, Drone, Night, Extreme Risk, etc.)

Oh God, the dress was wonderful. And the fingernails. And the looks.

But the best part . . .

Tom: If that doesn't work you can just uncorked the pheromones.

Janeway: I beg your pardon!

Funniest part EVER

It was a complete joy - forget year of hell - they should have planned to do half a series set in that realm. It felt like Kate Mulgrew was having a ball.

Somebody really should remake one of those classic B&W serials in this tongue and cheek way.

It's a fun romp once they're in the holodeck but I think the technobabble set-up holds it back. They spend too much time setting it the why that they forget that it's supposed to just be a 'let-you-hair-down' episode. And the fact that it's only Janeway and the Doc who get into character and join the program is a let down as well - shouldn't the others get involved and let the actors have some fun? I mean look at DS9's Bond parody Our Man Bashir - all the main cast except Odo, Quark, and Jake are involved in the holoprogram, playing different roles, and the episode starts in program. It's that kind of acknowledgment that the episode is a humorous one from the get-go that Bride lacks. Either take it seriously or play it light, but decide from the get go and stick with it, don't play bait and switch like this.

Frankly, I would have preferred that they had done the whole episode in the style of Captain Proton, letting us meet each character as a Proton character, with only a final scene of the 'Computer, end program, isn't it nice that the universe wasn't ending and we could indulge ourselves in some flight of fancy' and everyone laughs to end it.

Loved it. I thought it was a nice break from more serious episodes. Funny that it came about because part of the set was being rebuilt after a fire. Maybe they should have burned down the whole soundstage!?!

I thought it was trying a bit too hard to be funny, it didn't come as naturally as it should have, but overall I did like it, it was funny.
Mulgrew did ham it up a bit TOO much right now.

I tend to frown on holodeck-centric episode in Trekdom, but this was just so fun and funny and campy I couldn't help but like it. I'd take Captain Proton's adventures over Fair Haven any day. And it was in black and white! Classic.

I LOVE this episode, mainly because I grew up watching the really old flash gordon serials.

I saw them in the 1990s on early morning BBC Two on saturdays.

Why do you think that?

I thought Mulgrew was a bit over the top, too, until I realized that it was Janeway playing Arachnia. I'm blaming her. LOL

Lol. She was a little over the top. But that was the styles in the 30's and 40's. The melodramatic pauses and over done acting.

But yeah one could say she was over the top.

Or maybe that's how Arachnia's character was supposed to be. She did look a little . . . Confused when she was reading the specifications.

Wait, that was for the costume. I'm running in circles today. :)

But still, her in that dress made me drool. And to steal the words of Eric Stonestreet, "I am openly straight" But there was just something about the dress. :rommie:

If Mulgrew was over the top, it was because she was supposed to be over the top as Arachnia. I don't see how one can complain out her being melodramatic when melodrama is exactly what was called for.

Fine, then she went over over the top. A few too many eye rolls.
