Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting...

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

I haven't seen Conner Trinnear(?) since Enterprise...although, I've heard he was on one of the Stargate series...
Connor Trinneer.
Non-Stargate Atlantis appearances:

Numb3rs
NCIS
Without a Trace
Criminal Minds
Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
Close to Home
24
The Closer
Lincoln Heights
Star Runners (SciFi)
Manchild
Family Guy (Road to Rupert)

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Ed O'Neill was great on the Dragnet revival. Now he's found middle ground on Modern Family.

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Malcolm McDowell turns up in L & O: Criminal Intent as well; interestingly, he is typecast. He portrays a racist, negative man...alt least in the episode I saw. I'm not sure if he was on any of the L & O series before. (Actually, it was a good story...but McDowell always seems to play a bad guy...lol)

No, he was on the one episode of CI and that was it.

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

The Superman franchise has always been pretty bad about type casting people. The 1950's Superman George Reeves is probably one of the best examples of type casting out there.

Reeves wanted to be a serious actor, and he finally landed a part in a World War II drama (I think it was "From Here to Eternity"). However, when test audiences saw the film, they died out laughing when they saw Reeves come on screen; there were people shouting out, "Hey, it's Superman!". Reportedly, it left Reeves devastated for the rest of his life.

Actually, thats a bit of an urban legend - the makers of the film said his role was not larger then what was on screen in the final version. And there was not an over reaction to him from the test audiences.

McDowell was also on CSI: Miami two weeks ago playing a jackass defense attorney.

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Alexander Siddig really broke away strongly from DS9, appearing in in several movies, most notably a major role in Syrianna with George Clooney and appeaering on 24.

Go figure...

And 'Kingdom of Heaven'....

Personally, I like when actors break away from Trek and show their acting chops...(Well, those who do have acting chops)...

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Out of Trek actors I've seen in other roles, I can't think of any that seemed to be typecast into their Trek role. Shatner tends to be typecast, but as himself, rather than as Kirk. The only issue is how many different significant roles we've actually seen them in. But almost every role I've seen a Trek actor in has been very different from their Trek role.

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Something I have always wondered is if they do any theater work? Sometimes when I look at a Trek actor/actress IMDB page it's sparsely populated with guest appearances. I know a lot of Trek actors have a backgrounds in theater so maybe thats where they go.

Yes but in those roles he plays Muslim/Arab guys with an accent. So sad to be honest because he's is one of the few British guys on American tv/films that doesn't have an annoying British accent.

Connor Trinneer and Harry Groener did "Equivocation" in L.A. last fall, with Joe Spano (NCIS), Patrick J. Adams, and Brian Henderson.

The play was great and everyone in it was terrific. :)

ETA: Scott Bakula did "Romance, Romance" shortly after ENT was canceled and he also did the musical version of "Shenendoah" at Ford's Theater in Washington. I didn't see him in "RR" but I did get to see him in D.C.

I think that's probably also just related to CI. CI's all about characters like that and McDowell plays it well, so it's a logical combo.

CI's always been locking down some awesome guest stars, I'm hoping for some good ones when the new season starts later this month

I'm looking forward to the new season myself. ;)

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Dude, it's the last few episodes for Goren and Eames too, there's going to be a ton going on - should be great.

As far as guest stars, one thing I've always found (remember this from SCU a lot) is that the guest star is 98% of the time the killer. So when you see Hayden Panatierre in the episode, you know immediately where this episode going.

I'm going to the Tribeca Film Festival in a few weeks - Siddig is staring in an indie with Patricia Clarkson called "Cairo", where he will play an Eygptian man she develops a relationship with. If I get to see it, I'll advise on his performance.

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Brent Spiner has been asked before about typecasting and he said that his role as Data hasn't led him to be typecast. However, his role as a scientist in Independence Day has. He said everybody always tells him that they have the perfect scientist role for him.
That's funny, because the other role that I always remember Spiner for is the recurring character of a poor dumb hick on "Night Court".

I'm watching an SVU episode right now, and we have Dean Cain, Teri Garr, and Veronica Cartwright all in one episode...! (Dean Cain is the bad guy, though). Keir Dullea (Dave Bowman from 2001) portrayed a corrupted judge who impregnates an underage girl....

So, yeah, it seems the guest stars usually are the villains...;)

As far as CI: It looks like Goldblum's character will be the opposite of Goren. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out....

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

I actually think I remember that SVU ep you're talking about.

As far as CI: It looks like Goldblum's character will be the opposite of Goren. I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out....

Agreed. Gotta say though, Goldblum's the damn man, and I'm pretty confident he can handle taking over the reins of being the lead detective.

Oh, yeah....he's going to do fine.;)

They showed the lead up episode very early morning yesterday; I missed it. I'm sure they'll be some sort of lead up for the season opener tonight.

Some other cameos I noticed:

Jeri Ryan was in a 'catch it or you'll miss it' scene on SVU rerun sometime ago as an attorney; Judd Hirsch (as I type this) is currently on an SVU as a shady doctor....even Spike Lee's sister--Joie--was on an SVU as a nurse...

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

Any of you guys watch the CI premiere on Tuesday?

I liked the kick off, and we saw the return of the classic L&O title cards. As for the outcome, all I can say is:
Ross! Noooooo. He will be missed though

Re: Brent Spiner in 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' and typecasting..

I saw Anthony Montgomery on an episode of NCIS. He actually had lines and served the plot, so Enterprise hasn't typecast him. :p

He was also on an episode of House as a social services agent... he did good actually, I believed the delivery of the 3 lines.
