Bad News for "Wolverine"

Today's Variety:

Two recent productions, "Babylon A.D." and "Wolverine," were rumored to have gone through Fox's on-set maelstrom.

On the eve of the film's release, "Babylon" helmer Mathieu Kassovitz publicly claimed the studio ruined his longtime passion project. "Wolverine" helmer Gavin Hood was nearly fired, according to sources, because of squabbles with the studio, and two backup directors were in place before Richard Donner -- who is married to the film's producer Lauren Shuler Donner -- flew to the Australian set to smooth things over. At the time, Fox insisted that Richard Donner was on-set because he is a producer on the film. However, current credits for the film list various producers, but Donner is not one of them.

Just to bring things a little back on topic, I would just like to say that I think most comic book projects would be improved simply by having Richard Donner breathe on them. (For that matter, why isn't Warner Bros. talking to this guy about doing another Superman movie? Get the one guy who has unanimously, unequivocally gotten Superman right!)

Because Donner hasn't made a good (or even particularly successful) movie in years?

Not to mention that the man is nearing 80. But I'm surprised Warner Bros. never returned to Donner to revitalize the franchise after the failures of Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

And despite what The Borgified Corpse might think, not everybody thinks Donner "unanimously, unequivocally [got] Superman right!". I thought Donner's Superman was a dumb, cheesy film. Spinning around the Earth to reverse time .

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

And, ironically, he didn't even fly in the right direction to make that happen. :guffaw:

I'm a big fan of Richard Donner's Superman ... until the second hour. Up until that point, everything is fantastic.

Once Clark gets to Metropolis and we're introduced to the bumbling Otis walking down the streets of New Yor -- erm, Metropolis, we're in a screwball comedy and that's where things begin to nosedive for me.

I wouldn't necessarily go to Donner for everything live-action Superman related. I'm sure there's a talented and capable director out there that understands Superman. We just have to find 'em (or, for that mattter, Warner Bros. does).
