Arts and Crafts Thread

Does colouring count as an 'art and craft'?
Natch! :) It's almost the first one everyone learns, unless mudpie-making counts.

I recently went to the public library, intending to get a head start on my April Camp NaNoWriMo entry (am sitting the current November one out)... and got sidetracked when I found out that they offer adult coloring pages. So I settled down with a box of pencil crayons and a picture of a whale. I've got most of the water done, and next time I go back to the library, I'll finish the picture.

Otherwise... I've got Doodle Art pictures from decades ago I never even started. I prefer using felt pens instead of pencil crayons, but I can't get the really good ones anymore.

Great idea for a thread!
Here's some art I did with paper many years ago:

Nice! I love penguins. :)

Most of the arts & crafts stuff I've done over the years has been in plastic canvas. I've done magnets, coasters, kleenex box covers, Christmas ornaments, bookmarks, bookends, and when I needed some medieval-style headdresses for a couple of SF convention costumes, that's what I made them out of.

A couple shots of my recently finished Fourth Doctor Scarf. I need to trim the tassels some and stop looking so grumpy. It's my default picture face.

Dude, that's awesome! :bolian:

Well thank you so much! I can see you're a Fourth Doctor fan as well! It definitely was time consuming but oh so worth it. I actually want to knit a season 18 scarf one day if I can find the right type of yarn to use. The original was done in chenille yarn and is roughly 20 feet long! :cardie:

My latest crafting endeavors: Glitter or "putz" houses.

I actually made around 30, and most sold at my church's bazaar.

Fantastic!

My sister is the knitter in the family, and actually knitted me one for Christmas last year! It's the full fourteen feet, and I have to tell you, there were a few 0º F days of winter last year when it was pretty damn practical. I think the high was 6º the day I took this picture to send to my sister; the scarf wrapped around my head twice, and my neck three times, and still plenty long. She said I looked like a freakish hermit nerd, but a cool freakish hermit nerd. :)

I made this scarf for a friend yesterday. It is normal length ;). It's a Christmas present but I made it in a mad dash, because she is coming over for Thanksgiving this afternoon and I probably won't see her again till after the holidays, so I want to give it to her today. She loves red, and this was just such a deep and lovely red. I really like this scallop stitch too, it's cozy and knobbly and super soft.

Thanks! Mine isn't the full 14 feet original it's a season 14 scarf so it's been shortened some but it's still a good 10-11 feet long. The scarf your sister made is wonderful! And the one you made for your friend is so rich looking. It really is a great color! I will probably learn to crochet some day. My mother and brother do it.

I've bought up some needles and thread over the last while to make an embroidery piece, so I'll try some practise pieces soon.

Knowing me this will end badly, but I want to make at least one presentable thing.

Y'know, I've always really admired embroidery work. I'm quite interested in cross stitch and would like to try my hand at it some day.

If it is your fandom, there are adult coloring books for Benedict Cumberbatch and Doctor Who at Amazon. I have my eyes on the latter.

I saw a few things an American friend did, including whole houses and a TARDIS even as a kleenex box. I thought that was pretty cool, I'd never seen anything like that before. I don't think we have that in Germany.

These are really nice! And so varied in style. No wonder they sold well. I usually the the problem that I can't decide on one and then take none!

As a child, I did lots of crafty stuff with stones and shells. I glued the stones together to make figures and painted them. I gave it all away to grandmothers and my mother though. Need to find some to photograph ;)

I've always wanted to learn how to knit and/or crochet. I need something to do with my hands during my day-long Doctor Who marathons. :p

I highly recommend knitting. I understand crocheting is faster and easier though....

I always heard that crocheting was easier, too, but that wasn't my experience at all! I have no idea why, but crocheting and I never got along. Knitting, on the other hand, was very easy for me to learn. I still use an afghan that I knit in about 1972.

I found knitting much easier to learn too. :D

^Yeah, no. Crocheting isn't easier by any means.

I think that for most people learning the basics of crochet is easier than the basics of knitting, but when you get beyond that they tend to even out. A straight, single crochet scarf might be easier than a knit scarf, but crocheting lace with thread and a tiny hook probably outranks a cable-knit sweater on the difficulty scale by far. It just depends on the project.

^ I have no idea why, but I couldn't learn even basic crocheting. Something about it just didn't click for me. [insert the knitting needles pun of your choice]

After about 30 years i decide to build some kits, so i ordered these 2 a couple of weeks ago:

The Beetle also came with paint and a brush.

Picked up some tools as well:

You need to find the needle in the haystick first though to be able to start ;)

As promised, I went and photographed some of my old crafts I did as a child.

Acorns and other nature stuff:

Stones:

FIMO (which was called Suralin in Eastern Germany times) - I'll have to explain that one. It's from after 1989 when we were able to see TV from Western Germany and watched happily everything, even commercials ;) This one is a "Cough", it was coughing all the time. My mother liked it so much that I made one for her:

I also made Tigger by pausing the video and drawing the pose. I am still pretty proud about this one:

The houses of the snails are real:

My dragon:

My little brother's dragon:

Peacock:

Salt dough:

As you can see, my mother has kept it all!
