Anyone else notice this Netflix issue?

I've been watching a lot of TOS lately on Netflix, as I am too lazy to pull out my DVD's. Well that and, with 3 kids under 5, if I pull a DVD out, chances are they'll get slimed...

Anyway, I started "Obsession" the other night, and noticed that it wasn't the remastered version.

Any idea why Netflix doesn't have the remastered one? Is this the only episode they have that isn't remastered? I've watched at least 15 episodes in the past three weeks, and all but "Obsession" was the remastered version.

I don't know, since I don't use Netflix, but I have the dvd with the new effects, so I'm content. It's one of my favorite episodes.

Yes, Netflix is streaming the original version for some reason. Amazon Video has the version with the remastered effects in their set.

The misuse of the word "remastered" has me confused. Do you mean they're showing the remastered episode with the original FX?

For this episode, Netflix has the version with the faded colors, scratches, and the 11' Enterprise model, which was filmed in front of a blue screen in 1967. All of the other TOS episodes that they are streaming are from the 2006 CBS remastering project, with cleaned up and restored footage and CG visual effects.

I'm looking at the episode now. Colors don't look faded to me. It just looks like they transferred the remastered version with original effects.

Well the original ship flybys would have had scratches and been faded--perhaps what he meant.

I believe it was only the effects, but, I'd have to watch the episode again. Maybe it's just my memory, but, I believe there might be another episode like that on there as well.

Yes, this been reported before, it seems there are random holes in Netflix's library, a few that aren't the 2006 editions. It also seems to have changed over time, one person would say they saw an episode and then a few weeks later another person would comment saying it was the new CGI edition.

According to New Horizon, they would seem to be the 2006 versions, only with the original FX.

Are you guys sure about that? they aren't from the 2004 DVD versions? I guess I could fire up Netflix and look at it myself, I haven't ever felt the need since I own the BDs.

If they are the 2006 remasters with original VFX, that's really interesting, because CBS seems to have mostly taken a "Lucas-like" tact with the 2006 remasters, which is the only versions they usually give out are the CGI versions.
For example, all you'll find on the single-disc TOS collection BD called "Origins" that they did to cash in on STID's home video release is the CGI version.

What's being aired Saturday nights on MeTV are the CGI versions too.

EDIT: Ok I went and looked and yes it's definitely the 2006 remaster with the original VFX, interesting...

I just find this odd... that this one episode, out of the dozen plus I have watched over the past few weeks, doesn't have the remastered effects.

Now, mind you, I don't really care. I grew up with the other effects, and loved them. In fact, sometimes the Remastered effects take me right out of the episode... I just find the inconsistency odd.

I've seen something similar in other Netflix offerings. For "Quantum Leap" they only have some, not all, of the 5th season episodes.

I really don't mean to be consistently annoying, but I think that's what's going to happen in this thread. The new FX aren't "remastered." They're entirely new FX. The original series with the origin al FX were remastered; the new FX were added, and had nothing to do with the remaster. The new FX are the only part of the series which wasn't remastered.

Yes, I'm pedantic, but this misuse of the word leads to confusion.

Some of the original FX actually hold up nicely in HD. Some of them.

You're fighting a losing battle since CBS/Paramount decided to call the CGI Enhanced episodes the "Remastered Edition." Hence TOS-R. It's the official name. The company started it and keeps it alive. So, people here aren't necessarily wrong, depending on the usage. CBS is to blame for this one.
