Plain text is a Callisto story
Italics are a Hope story
The bold titles feature both of them.

Neither of them appear in "..Sin Trade", but the ep is all about the aftermath of a Hope episode, and it's my favorite 2-parter, so what the hell.

Hmmm.

Suddenly my (Voyager) fanfics seem sooooo prudish. :alienblush:

I have a question about "Xenaslash".

Since the show was about the "relationship" between two women... does Xena/slash consist of stories about Xena and men? :p

No, any fic with the affection 'slash' will always be about same sex relationships, largely Xena/Gabrielle although Xena/Callisto is also popular as is Gabby/Aphrodite.
Plenty of hetero Xena stories, a series full of good looking guys, the late Kevin Smith as Ares extremely popular.

There's even people who ship Joxer/Gabby and Joxer/Xena but you should never mention that at conventions because people throw stuff at you and yell things like 'Burn the witch!':scream::rolleyes:

(I actually post on some other forums as Joxerlives)
I think part of the joy of fanfic is not only can you get characters to do the things you never actually get to see them do on screen but you can cross genres, the fic I mentioned for instance allows you to combine Xena/Wonder Woman/Buffy and have the characters interact with one another

Can I assume you discovered this convention rule from personal experience, or were you the one throwing tomatoes and shouting epithets? ;)

Talking about cross genre's... the Admiral challenged me a few months ago in a thread I started, comparing strong female leads from the 90's, http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=125457&page=3 to write a fanfic that included all of her fav women. Oh.... and I WASN'T allowed to kill anyone. Alas, I could only recognize 4 of her favs... tell me what you think of it.

So, Renee O'Connor has seen the way Kate Mulgrew and Lucy Lawless have been looking at each other during their weekly poker games, and she sees the writing on the wall. She KIDNAPS Kate and "threatens" her to stay away from Lucy "or else".

Lucy goes to the police to report 2 missing loves and teams up with Officer Mariska Hargitay to search for Kate and Renee, never suspecting they aren't both victims.

Meanwhile, back at the kidnapper's lair, Kate is busy rescuing herself as she lets her voice lull Renee into a state of confusion as she claims her interests were NEVER for Lucy but rather for Renee herself.

Renee is now very confused... does she want Xena, Warrior Princess or Janeway, Captain of the Voyager? She's wise enough to realize that these two women do NOT believe in "sharing".

Just as she's about to give in to her deepest heart's desires.... Lucy and Mariska come bursting through the doors. As Mariska cuffs Renee's hands behind her back, the last thing Renee sees is Lucy comforting a seemingly distraught Kate.

Back in the holding cell of the NYC precinct, Renee is despondent over the turn her life has taken. A softly accented voice asks her if she'd like a cup of coffee, and Renee lifts up her eyes to see a brown haired vision with the lyrical voice on the other side of the bars. When she nods, a hand passes through the bars with the cup, and Renee grasps it gratefully, thanking Sister Reba McEntire for her kindness, and wishes her "friends' were as supportive as this stranger. Sister Reba, who's mission is ministering to the incarcerated, assures Renee that she will not desert her in her time of need.

Not for the first time I was the one doing the ducking and running! Personally I never read fanfic with real people in it, I'm ok with fictional characters but not real folks

Oh, I don't usually do real folk either, I just couldn't figure out a way of doing a Xena/Voyager/L&O/Reba cross over without resorting to Timetravel.

I think kimC has put a moratorium on that plot device in the Voy forum. :rommie:

Episode 25, Season 2 premiere "Orphan of War".

Just when you think this show's emotional heart revolves only around the growing relationship between a Warrior Princess and her "ward", an apprentice Bard from Potadiea ... TPTB throw you a curve ball.

Xena has another unrequited love.

Her son.

Kaleipus: “Xena-- destroyer of nations. You promised
you’d never return.”
Xena: “That Xena never will. I’m sure you figured it out--
Dagnine’s here for the Ixion stone.”
Kaleipus: “And what are you here for, or shouldn’t I have to guess?”
Xena: “I came to stop Dagnine. I’m not here for anything, or-- or
anybody.”
Gabrielle: “Anybody?”

(A young boy jumps from a tree top to ambush Xena. She easily deflects him away from her and he hits the ground between her and the Centaur.)
Kaleipus: “Solon.”
Solon: “I wanna kill her, Uncle!”
Kaleipus: “I won’t have you thinking that way.”
Solon: “But she killed my father; she killed the great Borias!”
Kaleipus: “Leave us, now; we’ll talk later.”
Solon: (To an astonished Xena) “You’ve just met your greatest enemy.”

There were so many great ideas/lines/scenes in this ep which serve to do the one thing I love the most about this series... tell the story of where Xena came from... how she came to be... and how she deals with the consequences of her actions.

After over a decade of doing whatever she felt for the good of only herself... the greatest praise one could probably lay at this Warrior's feet was whispered by her best friend into the ear of that same friend's unknowing son.

Gabrielle: “... Xena’s pretty amazing, isn’t she?”
Solon: “Yeah-- She sure knows a lot.”
Gabrielle: “You know, she’s a good person, too. She always does what’s
right-- even when it hurts her.
I forget that sometimes.”
Solon: “She’s not like I heard.”
Gabrielle: “You know, this is the only Xena I’ve ever known. I find it
hard to understand the hatred that she gets sometimes, when we
travel-- from people who just don’t know her the way I know her....”

Although this ep had plenty of things to love from the martial...

Watching her split a thrown spear in to two with her sword, and those two halves perforate two scumbags attacking her from behind...

To the slapstick....

Watching Xena roll under the evil Ixon Centaur, and kicking him in the only place evil Centaurs don't want to be kicked... (Gratuitous ST VI reference... Kirk: I'm just glad he had knees." Alien: Those weren't his "knees". )

To the righteous....

Xena is calling for help by blowing into a vast undergound system of roots... creating an unearthly howl that calls the attention of everyone who hears it.

Kaleipus:What in Zeus’ name is that?”
Gabrielle: “If you don’t know, it must be Xena.”

and from the men pursuing her...

Lieutenant: “What’s that?”
Dagnine: “How should I know? But I don’t think I’m gonna like it.
This way!” (How right you are!!!)

To the supraOlympic Athletic....

Jumping out of the tent, through the hole in the "roof", falling hundreds (?) of feet and not breaking a bone!

To the definately NONmaternal...

Xena Warrior Sex Kitten busy distracting Dagnine in his tent... (Xena reminds me so much of the Catwoman from the 1960's TV show in this scene.)

Xena: “You were always a bargaining man. I assume that’s what you
want to do; otherwise, you would have called in your guards by
now.”
Dagnine: “That, and the fact that you could kill me in two steps.
Oh-- but you’d never see your boy again, would you?
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Ha-ha-ha! Very well. There are-- three
things that I do want. One, the stone.”
Xena: “Don’t have it; don’t know where it is.”
Dagnine: “I do; it’s in the Ixion caverns-- somewhere near these
cliffs. It’s only a matter of time before we find it. Which--
leads me to number three-- I want you out of the way. Leave the
valley.”
Xena: “Not without my son.”
Dagnine: “Ha-ha-ha-ha! You’re hardly in a position to bargain,
now, are you? I’m sure you get through all those guards, and
into that cage. But-- your son would be dead. No-- I’m the one
who has the power now, Xena. You are at my beck and call.”
Xena: “You forgot the second thing.”
Dagnine: “Oh, yeah. Well-- remembering that I have your son, (He moves to sit next to Xena within cuddling distance) I just want a bit of-- warmth, a little-- human kindness.”
Xena: “If only you were human.” (THWACK!!!)

To the VERY maternal....

Lets just pick one for now... the bone setting scene in the Ixion cavern, after she realizes Solon is hurt. I wonder how hard it was for the writers to KEEP from having her sing to Solon as he was whimpering.

Gabrielle: "...She always does what’s right-- even when it hurts her. I forget that sometimes..."

Yes Gabrielle, you do. But you are learning after several miss-steps, and if Xena can be patient, so can I.

You're just lucky you knew enough to keep your mouth shut, or Xena's patience may have met an early demise... along with a certain Apprentice Bard from Potadiea.

Another Xena commentary I listened to this weekend (which ep????) had Rob Tapert mention how his wife took it as a (?) badge of honor that the New Zealand Academy never recognized her work during her 6 years on Xena. Lucy (hopefully) knew that many "critics" don't value the scifi/fantasy world, so why get all worked up over it.

Its obvious they never watched the show... or at least never watched the final scene of THIS ep, between Solon and Xena. I am just mesmerized by the emotions fighting their way across Xena's face when she's trying to tell Solon... without telling Solon, that she regrets her past decisions. That face just slays me... as its a visible combination of pain, nobility, self sacrifice and love.

The final face... however, the one Solon can't see but we can as she walks away from him one last time... is just one of exquisite, unrelenting, heart wrenching pain.

And for those of us in the know... its only going to get worse before it gets better.

Episode 26: season 2 (#2) "Remember Nothing".

Poor Xena.

Her problem was that she remembered everything.

She remembered how 11 years ago "today" her brother's life was cut short when as a teen he followed his older sister into battle against Cortese while defending their village. Every year since then, we are lead to believe, Xena has honored that memory (reopened that wound?) by making offerings to the Three Fates.

Xena: “By this flame, I call on the three Fates: The Maiden, the Mother, and the Crone. Comfort my brother, Lyceus, whose life you cut short this day eleven years ago. In his memory, I ask it.”
Gabrielle: “I wish I could have known your younger brother.”
Xena: “If I hadn’t insisted that we rally against Cortese, you might have.”
Gabrielle: “Xena, it’s not your fault. He chose to stand for something he believed in.”
Xena: “Yeah, me. Gabrielle, you don’t know what it’s like to take a life, let alone cause the death of someone you love. The gods grant you never do.”

This ep brings up some interesting ideas, ideas that willl be revisited in next season's "The Dirty Half Dozen", when Gabby asks the Warrior Princess a personal question.

Xena: "... I've got that answer to your question. Are you who you are, or are you who I made you?"
Gabrielle:
"And?"
Xena: "You're Gabrielle-- bard, Amazon Princess-- best friend. Nobody made you who you are-- it was already there. The question is, who would I be without you?"

But that was only half the truth. What Xena learned on the 11th anniversary of her brother's death, was that there are some forms of living, worse than death, and some things in life worth dying for.

Gabrielle the slave girl taught her that, and Lyceus her courageous younger brother reminded her of that.

This ep has undergone a mini review on page 5, and I'll try not to hit the same points. Instead... I'll just focus on Lyceus and Gabrielle. As the ep unfolds... we see Lyceus still loves his big sister deeply, but is troubled by the events that occurred 11 years ago when they abandoned their village to the Warlord Cortese and lost everything... including their Mother's life.

Xena: “You should’ve seen him, Lyceus. Petty son-of-a-blood-sucking Bacchae. That’s what all slavers are.”
Lyceus: “You act like it’s news. Why do you think I wanted to stop Cortese? Not just to get the town back. Men like that can’t go unchallenged Look what happened to the Amazons.”
Xena:
“The Amazons? Yeah, I guess they’re a good example-- aren’t they?”
Lyceus: “Sure. No one challenged the warlord who started things with them and the Centaurs-- and now where are they?Dead, mostly-- or enslaved by the same scum who tricked them. What was his name? Cretan. No, Crouton.”
Xena: “Krykus.”
Lyceus: “Yeah, right-- another charmer. Seems like everywhere you look these days, things are going from bad to worse. And, no one’s doing a thing to stop it-- except you.”
Xena: “Me?”
Lyceus: “Why-- going up against a slave boss like you did. Guess all that sparring finally paid off, huh? Next thing you know, you’ll be taking on Mezentius himself.”
Xena: “Don’t think I wouldn’t love it. No, there’s gotta be another way to go.”
Lyceus:It’s not your fault the world’s the way it is. And with Mezentius lording it safely in his castle, what can you do?”

Everyone remembers Mezentius, right? The Warlord selling arms in the season 1 ep where Marcus (Xena's former lover) was killed? Mezentius was the one who planned to kill the young kidnapped bride after he had his "fun" with her in the grotto. He met Xena there instead and ultimately met his death. (Yea!)

Mezentius is the one who owns Gabrielle, presumably since she and the rest of the women in her village were captured 13 months ago by Draco and sold as slaves. We don't know what happened to her beloved little sister, Lila. We do learn that Gabrielle's been whipped enough to leave scars on her back, and that Mezentius's slave boss claims his Master won't sell Gabrielle for any price because "she's his favorite". For those who are uncertain regarding "favorite what"... there's a fair amount of groping in one scene to give you that answer.

In the "Warrior Princess" timeline... our young Gabrielle is still a virgin and will be until she marries Perdicus 3 eps from now. In THAT timeline... Xena prays to whatever God will listen...

Xena: “If anyone’s listening-- you know, I’m not much for praying. But I don’t know what else to do. I was ready to give up once, and-- and Gabrielle came into my life. Please-- don’t let that light that shines out of her face go out. I couldn’t stand the darkness that would follow.”

The Warrior Princess KNEW she had to pray with all her might to prevent that from happening... because in this alternative timeline she already found out what it meant to see a Gabrielle who's light had been lost long ago.

But that's not all she saw in this timeline. She saw a young man who had grown strong in honor, a man who didn't follow a sister into battle to defend his village, but one who rallied his people to take BACK the village. A man who was proud to train and fight along side his big sister, a man who's plan to stop the three Warlords included his sister taking command of the village defense while he and Maphias fought on two other fronts. A man who was proud when his sister stood up to a slaver in defense of a young slave being beaten... and yet... a man confused and angry when that same sister didn't take up a sword and defend herself when those slavers broke into their home.

The two siblings are hanging from a couple of iron maidens from the roof of the dungeon. Gabrielle is in her own cage nearby.

Lyceus: “I’m surprised you care one way or the other-- seeing how you sold us out.”
Xena:
“Aren’t you confusing me with Maphias?”
Lyceus: “At least Maphias thought he was protecting us. You just gave up. We could’ve taken those guys, but you didn’t even try. Why not?”
Xena: “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”
Lyceus: “Well, try me! ‘Cause right now, I don’t know what to believe. I thought we felt the same way about these monsters!”
Xena: “We do.”
Lyceus: “Then why didn’t you fight?! I saw you Xena-- you wanted to! Why didn’t you pick up the sword?!”
Xena: “Because I-- Because I was afraid.”
Lyceus: “We’re all afraid to die, Xena. But for me, some things are worth fighting for-- you, our friends, Gabrielle. These men have got to be stopped!”

What if Xena still refused to pick up that sword?

Could the Warrior Princess really live the rest of her life, seeing that disappointment in her brother's eyes, knowing the life of beatings and degradation that she was consigning Gabrielle to, all because SHE didn't want to feel guilty for leading her brother into battle.

The battle rages on, and Xena is able to fight with her fists and feet, and somehow drawing blood THAT way doesn't count against her with the Fates... and then she sees something she prayed she'd never see.

Xena: “...Gabrielle, you don’t know what it’s like to take a life, let alone cause the death of someone you love. The gods grant you never do.”

Xena sees the young woman who once was Gabrielle, not only kill... but relish in the act.

Xena couldn't save this Gabrielle with a new dress and a new hairdo... or even with the few smouldering glances from her brother at her "friend". Gabrielle was right, when she told Xena in the prison that she thought it was too late to save her.

It was too late to save THIS Gabrielle.

But it wasn't too late to give her Brother Lyceus what he wanted.

A Sister who would stand by him and fight for what he believed in.

Lyceus: “Don’t fight destiny!”

.....

Xena: “Goodbye, Lyceus.”

......

Xena, episode 27, season 2's #3... "Giant Killer"

True to form for the Xenaverse, we discover that not only does Gabrielle meet and fall in like with David, shepard boy and future King of the Israelites...Xena is good friends with the giant Goliath, to whom she owes a great debt.

Best line in this ep, to explain why she doesn't pay off this debt...

Goliath: “I think I helped you enough for one lifetime.”
Xena: “I owe you my life, Goliath-- not the lives of others.”

Like "Death Mask" at the end of season 1, this ep misses the mark, but I'm less certain as to "why".

One thing that bugs me is the fact that the writers seem to be wedded to a single timeframe... "10 years ago " Goliath risked himself and his family to save Xena... and his family paid the price. EVERYTHING is 10 years ago . Can't something be 5 years ago? I know, silly nit, but still!

The other thing that rankles me... why did Gabby find it so surprising that Sarah was David's betrothed? Afterall, no OTHER women threw themselves into his arms when he returned from captivity?

At least Sarah saved ;) David's life by entering when she did... imagine what would have happened had the curse of the Bard alighted upon David's lips! Death at the maximum... and lost of his creative storytelling at the minimum!

Things I liked... Gabrielle isn't a shrinking violet anymore! When confronted by the warlord who wanted to take her into custody... she was ready to fight back.. and in fact did fight back. The other thing I loved was the predictable (YES!) response from our WP, when Gabs was in danger.

Gabrielle: (Staff at the ready, as she tries to draw attention TO herself and away from the other prisoners) “Why don’t you pick on someone who can defend themselves?”
Dagon: “Who? You?”
Xena:No-- me.” :)

The other thing I like about this ep, is that Gabrielle is no longer so self centered that she can't see when Xena needs her help.

Gabs has just been shot down by David in favor of his bretrothed... and she's walking down the hall berating herself for her stupidity when she turns a corner and sees Xena looking out at the stormy night sky. She doesn't go up to her mentor asking for understanding or solace over yet another young relationship thats gone away before it had a chance to go somewhere. No. The young Bard immediately senses that Xena's needs are greater than her own...

(Gabs is walking briskly away from David's chambers)
Gabrielle: “Dumb! Dumb, dumb, dumb!
(She goes down the hall and turns the corner, expecting to find Xena)

Gabrielle: (Searching)“Xena-- (Sees XWP standing at the window arch, looking out at the lightning flashes) thunder keeping you up?”
Xena: “No, just thinking.”
Gabrielle: “About tomorrow?” (When Goliath and the Philistines are expected to arrive)
Xena: “About ten years ago-- when Goliath and I fought in a campaign against Gareth and his army. We were caught off-guard one morning. Goliath was taking his wife and children to safety when I was surrounded and badly injured. I yelled at him to get back-- but he wouldn’t. He refused to leave me.”
Gabrielle: “He left his family?”
Xena: “While he was saving me, Gareth killed them all. (Xena LOOKS guilty, and stares at Gabrielle looking for understanding? Absolution?) I owe him much more than my life.” (Gabrielle... uncertain what to say to her mentor and friend, does the next best thing. The woman who couldn't read the looks between David and Sarah, recognizes the look of pain behind Xena's eyes and simply holds her hand.)

The story of Goliath is the Story of Xena without her Gabrielle. Goliath is bitter and seeking revenge for a wrong committed against his family years ago. Xena tries to talk him out of that revenge, but can't. We see what would have happened to Xena, but for Hercules, Lao Ma, and finally, most enduringly... Gabrielle.

Xena: “Do you think your wife would want you to hurt innocent people to avenge her?”
Goliath: “No! She wouldn’t! She was peace-loving and forgiving! And now, she’s dead! Because I wasn’t there when my family needed me! I have to live with that! But these innocent people of yours stand between me and Gareth. And if you stand with them, you’ll be my main target. I’m sorry.”
Xena: “No, I’m sorry. This is the last time we’ll be meeting in this place. You were a good friend, Goliath.”
Goliath: “So were you. See you on the battlefield.”

Understanding? Respect? Absolution? Gabrielle didn't know what to give Xena, but Xena knows what to give Goliath as he lay dying from David's wicked throw.

Goliath: “Xena.”
Xena: “I’m here, Goliath.”
Goliath: “Do you think I’ll see my family on the other side?”
Xena: “I don’t know. I can’t be the judge of that. I hope so, my friend.”
Goliath: “Gareth-- still-- ”
Xena: “Go, now. Your war is over.”
----------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------
Xena: “Goliath, I know you can hear my thoughts. I hope you’re with your family. When I think of you, I’ll remember Goliath, the great warrior-- and the loving husband-- and my friend.”

Episode #28, season 2's #4; Xena:Warrior Princess:

"Girls Just Wanna Have Fun."

Okay, a disclaimer first. There are two genre's that I just don't get into... the first is gangster shows (Except Kirk & Spock in "A Piece of the Action"... ;) ) and Vampire/Bacchae shows.

Anne Rice? Yeah, I've heard of her, never read her, didn't see the Tom Cruise movie and don't plan to.

"The Twilight Series" of books/films? Brought my neice and grand neice to the second movie last year cause I'm a great aunt... now my goal is to make sure they don't visit when the next films are released.

Now that you know my bias, lets talk about the show.

It wasn't half bad... although I'd LOVE it if someone could explain to me why Xena, with an obvious bite, didn't go bat sh..t. er crazy, and Gabrielle without an obvious one DID go "Bacchaus" all over Joxer's and Xena's ahhhh... "you know what".

I really liked the set up for this piece, and I'm shocked at how tolerable Joxer was in this show! "I'm on a mission!" I'm surprised that Xena didn't choke on such a grandiose statement.

I loved the "wolf pack" chase and the way Joxer plowed right over Gabby and scrambled up on the boulder to protect himself. I howled when Xena grabbed her whip and then pulled Gabrielle upright, throwing Gabby back with the orders, "Stay behind me!" to which Gabby wisely responded... "You DON'T have to tell me twice!" And I really loved it when Joxer handed Xena the bag and told her the contents "speak for themselves". :guffaw:

ETA yet another vid:

I guess if I was a "good" reviewer then I would complain that it didn't make sense for Gabby to turn all "evil" as soon as her eyes turned yellow/red, but that Xena was able to maintain her consciousness after HER transformation enough to remember to KILL Bacchaus before he and his followers won.

Obviously, instead of a reviewer, I'm just a Xena apologist who KNOWS that Xena always has a plan, a few tricks in reserve, and she will have the upper hand whether in heaven, hell or the Bacchae forest. :rommie:

I will admit... that given the show's two leads and the subtext that's been played up/down/all around as the episodes go by... it was only a matter of time before Gabrielle was seen to "attack" Xena. (It had to be G on X in this regard, just like in "The Bitter Suite" it was G striking the first blow on X during the Peace/War song, and in "Been there, Done that" its X with the "hickey"and G rolling her eyes. ) So... since it was only a "matter of time", its nice that TPTB got it out of their system early, and could get on with business of allowing their relationship to continue to deepen naturally.

Funniest line? Why... the LAST ones, of course! :mallory:

Joxer: “Guys-- wait up! Hey-- so what’s next?”
Gabrielle: “Next, huh?”
Joxer: “Yeah.”
Gabrielle: “Ah, we-- we fight Medusa, right?”
Xena: “Right.”
Gabrielle: “Well, you know, the-- the one with snakes all over her head.”
Xena: “Right.”
Gabrielle: “And, and-- one look, and the mightiest of men is turned into stone.”
Xena: “Right.”
Joxer: “Stone, huh? Oh, hay, listen, ah, um-- I just remembered--its my mom’s birthday. And she’s getting, you know, the--. I-- I better get back home, but, um-- I’ll catch up with you guys a little later.”
Gabrielle: (To Joxer) “No problem." (As Joxer runs up the hill, Gabby turns and leans towards Xena) You know-- you almost died trying to save me. I really want to do something to thank you.”
Joxer: (From afar) “Farewell, my warrior chums!”
Xena:
(To Gabrielle as Xena turns to walk away.)“You just did.”

Xena: Thriller style.

Episode #29 season 2's #5 Xena: Warrior Princess

"The Return of Callisto"

Now you know why I ran through those other two eps today... I KNEW this one was waiting for me!

As always, take this vid with a grain of salt. The editing can be misleading for people who can't recognize which clips are out of order and misleading the narrative, but it has great G/P scenes!.

Speaking of "misleading", TPTB that ran Xena certainly had fun pulling strings with this ep. Putting that wonderful blonde villain aside for a moment, lets go back to something I said about "Girls just wanna have fun".

"... that given the show's two leads and the subtext that's been played up/down/all around as the episodes go by...it was only a matter of time before Gabrielle was seen to "attack" Xena. "

So, after titillating the audience with Gabrielle converting Xena into a Vampire/Bacchae like herself, in the very next ep we see Gabrielle toy with and discard the idea of settling down with Perdicus and raising a family... only to change her mind in mid fight and desert Xena forthwith.

The poor Warrior Princess didn't know WHAT hit her!

To my uninformed mind, this ep "proved" to me that whatever looks might have been or were passing between these two friends over the last year and a half..., nothing was acted upon, except while under the influence of a Bacchae bite. Xena looked heartbroken during most of this ep, first because Gabrielle was leaving her, later because Gabrielle was herself heartsick over Perdicus' murder.

Although we know from Gabrielle's description of the WP, " “You know, she’s (Xena) a good person, too. She always does what’s right-- even when it hurts her. I forget that sometimes.”, we also know that the ultra sensitive Gabrielle wouldn't have committed herself to one (Xena) person, only to drop them for another more conventional (Perdicus) life "partner". Gabrielle truly loved young Perdicus, and I find that so refreshing considering the number of old/serious suitors that turned up in Xena's life during their travels so far. (Hercules, Marcus, Petricles)

But, the name of the game ISN"T the Curse of the Bard from Potadiea.... its ....

"The RETURN of CALLISTO!"

Prison Guard: (Throwing dice) Luck be a lady tonight!"
(Bare feet walk into view, and nearly step on the dice)
Callisto: (Dagger in hand)"You lose."

After dispatching all the prison guards single handledly to Tartarus... Callisto takes the remnants of her army and goes looking for trouble. But first, she stops to send a message to her oldest "friend"....

(Joxer is trying and failing to impress two young boys with his strength.)
Joxer: “Yeah-- I know that! That’s why I chose it!
Anybody can split an ordinary barrel in two! But, Joxer the Magnificent chose an iron-ribbed one! You see-- I like the challenge of choosing the hardest opponents, huh? The toughest, the most vicious opponents.”
Boy: “Like them.” (Points to a gang who just entered the barn behind Joxer)
Joxer: “Right, just-- (He turns around and sees ...)whoa! Whoa! Callisto! Don’t make me hurt you.”
Callisto: “Joxer-- the last time I saw you, you wanted to join myarmy, and now you want to fight me? Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk-- I am so disappointed.”
Joxer: “Yeah-- well I turned good-- just like Xena.”
Callisto: “Yeah? Well, I haven’t.”
Joxer: “Oh-- [fumbles for words]”
Callisto: “Be a dear, and deliver a message to the good Xena for me--will you?”
Joxer: “Sure.”
Callisto: “Tell her this. She should have killed me when she had the chance. For every drop of innocent blood I shed-- from here on-- is on her hands as well as mine.”
Joxer: (Gulps) “OK.”

Juxtaposing the bumbling Joxer with the super evil/super kewl Callisto is awe inspiring... you bring UP the threat factor, then bring it down again only to ratch it up once more as you leave... yes, Callisto is evil, she can hold a civil conversation without killing someone, but let there be NO mistake... she WILL be killing someone very soon.

Xena, beware!

LOVED the first meeting between Xena and Callisto, since they mirrored their first meeting in season 1. But this time, it was Xena catching the Chakram after it disarmed Callisto, and we see Callisto's shocked face within the chakram's circular frame.

Callisto: “I’ve missed you, Xena.”
Xena: “You never wrote.”

I have to admit... it surprised me that Callisto left the battle, left her army fighting Xena and the villagers, while she ran away. I can't quite figure that one out, except to say that "beating" Xena on the battlefield wasn't enough. She knew she wanted to make Xena's soul, suffer and die, and mere defeats wouldn't suffice. So she left, looking for another opportunity.

And Callisto would find it, once Gabrielle told Xena..."The answer is 'Yes', Xena. I'm going to marry him."

Despite Xena's brave face and braver words to Gabrielle when she was trying to decide her future, and after she had taken the marriage oaths... the saddest moment for me was after Gabrielle and Perdicus left the temple and then Xena said... "Goodbye, Gabrielle." Very reminiscent of Gabrielle's line, after she decided to leave Xena for Xena's own good in season 1's "The Ties that Bind".

Oh, remember that comment I made about the "ultra sensitive Gabrielle "? Who else but Gabrielle would be worried about their traveling companion and discussing same with her new husband on her wedding night?

Perdicus: “You’re gonna miss her, aren’t you?”
Gabrielle: “Yeah. I’m more worried about her missing me, though. She’s gonna be all alone. I have you.”

Loved the interrogation scene between Xena & Theodorus... but just as Xena comments on Callisto's breach of etiquette, you realize this business with Gabrielle and Perdicus has thrown the Warrior Princess off her game.

Xena: “Hello, Theodorus. We’ve been through all this before. But in case you don’t remember the details, you’ll be dead in seconds if you don’t tell me where Callisto is.”
Theodorus: “I don’t know where she is.”
Xena: “Wrong answer.”
Theodorus: “That’s the truth! She left hours ago.”
Xena: “Come on, Theodorus. She knew I was coming. She’s much too good a hostess not to be here to greet me.”
Theodorus: “I’m telling you the truth. When I told her you were travelling without Gabrielle-- she said, ‘Perfect,’ and left.”

Xena, Xena, Xena... Callisto TOLD YOU in that village she was pillaging... “Hmm-- hmm. Ahhh! (Has a sword to Xena's face) Don’t move, pretty. That sentimental
side of you is a real problem now, isn’t it? You fight with your heart. That gives me advantage over you. I no longer seem to have one. I’m not gonna kill you, now-- oh, no. First, I’m going to kill your soul-- just like you killed mine. See you soon, my sweet [Kiss gesture].”

Xena, how dare you leave Gabrielle alone, just because she married.

Callisto: (Callisto has sliced Perdicus' left arm, and rolled him away. She's kicked Gabrielle who's down for the count, and is about to impale her with her sword just as Xena rides up and jumps in to save Gabrielle.) "I longed to see you wailing over the body of your friend!”
Xena:
(sword drawn) “Well, it’s not going to happen.”

But even Xena can't save everyone... and as Callisto is thwarted with Gabrielle... she mortally wounds Perdicus as she turns to leave.

Callisto: (As Perdicus falls) That'll do.

The rest of the ep was a wonderful commentary on the mental breakdown of Gabrielle, and its effect on the Warrior Princess. From their conversation under the tree regarding Gabrielle's lust after a sword fighting lesson...

Gabrielle: “My ideals were a lie. I thought love was the strongest power on Earth. What a fool. Love is helpless in the face of cruelty.”
Xena: “Gabrielle, if you’re taken over by hatred-- Callisto wins.”
Gabrielle: “I’ve got news for you, Xena. She’s already won. Now, show me how to use a sword.” :weep:

To Xena's prayer to her Olympian Gods...

Xena: “If anyone’s listening-- you know, I’m not much for praying. But I don’t know what else to do. I was ready to give up once, and... and Gabrielle came into my life. Please-- don’t let that light that shines out of her face go out. I couldn’t stand the darkness that would follow.”

But the woman who demanded Xena's promise NOT to turn into a monster intent upon revenge if ever Gabrielle was killed... that woman can't feel anything except hatred and vengence. She can't even feel the sincerity of this simple prayer, or sense the despair that caused this Warrior to attempt it. No, she can only sense that without tricking her best friend, she will not be allowed to kill another human being.

Fortunately... the ultra sensitive Gabrielle that many of us have come to love, rediscovers her soul when she has her sword at the throat of a sleeping Callisto, and stops herself before she has gone too far.

Which of course leads to Xena's capture, a wonderful fight where Joxer actually provides a great distraction, a chariot race and that cliche of all cliches.... QUICK SAND. :klingon:

And a last, defining Xena/Callisto moment.

Callisto: [Laughs] We’re both gonna die, Xena. How wonderful. We can spend the rest of eternity in Tartarus, together-- hmm?”
Xena: “Always the optimist.”
Callisto:
(She watches Xena impale her chakram into a nearby log... then flick the end of her whip around the chakramm and pull herself from the quicksand)“Oh, you’re good, Xena.
Xena-- help me.
Xena! Xena.
Please-- Xena.
Help me-- please?
You can’t just let me die,
Xena. Xena. Xena.
I’m counting on you.
Help me. Help me!
Help me! Xena!
(She's disappearing deep into the sand.)
Aaaaaah!”

Callisto's gone.

Perdicus is gone.

Xena and Gabrielle remain.

After stitching Joxer up, Xena goes to stand next to Gabrielle as she stares out into the distant beach/ocean.

Xena: “What were you doing?”
Gabrielle: “Loving him.”
Xena: (Who knows this for sure from Marcus)“He’ll hear your thoughts.”
Gabrielle: “I know-- forever and ever.”

Alas my dear, it won't be the last time.

'Girls just want to have fun', bring on the slash and the Buffy fanfic crossovers (one theory is that Callisto gets her incredible abilities because she's the Slayer of her age. Another is that she's also Ares daughter). But check out the the flaming torches in the dance scene, if you look closely you can see the gas tanks fuelling them

Return of Callisto is the ep that made me a fan, not only do we have Callisto back and more brilliant than ever but Xena just sits there and let's her die and you thought 'Wow, this isn't your normal hero, this isn't Baywatch in leather'. Also note with Gabby married Xena relies on Joxer for support, something that recurs time and again throughout the series

Question re: Xena slash... how did the fandom take Gabby's marriage to Perdicus, 1 "week"/Ep after she planted that Bacchae bite on Xena? Or were they mollified by Xena kissing Gabrielle after the wedding, and poor Perdicus' quick death?

(No-one obviously warned sweet Perdicus about the curse of the Bard. ;) )

Okay, remembering that I don't watch Vampire stuff... shouldn't it be Xena that's the slayer of her epoch? Xena was busy killing bad guys, and Callisto was busy killing everyone.

As for you becoming "Xena addicted" because of "Return of Callisto"... that simply proves you have awesome taste. :bolian:

One thing I've noticed in the rewatch, and which ISN'T commented upon in the commentaries... is after Callisto sinks below the quicksand and presumably dies... you see Xena kneeling at the edge of the quicksand, and Xena's whip is laying along the ground from Xena to the hole that swallowed Callisto. (Earlier we actually see Xena roll the whip up, after pulling herself to safety & before Callisto dies) Its almost as if TPTB filmed a portion of a scene where Xena DID try to save Callisto at the last minute and failed, and the editor used the tail end to splice into his cut. (Yeah, right, like Xena can fail to save someone twice in 1 ep! )

Back on page 7, when reviewing the season 1 "Warrior...Princess" ep, I made this statement.

Sometimes, a body just wants to laugh...
out loud... :guffaw:
and maybe, just maybe, roll around on the floor because your knees will no longer hold you up.

I LIKED "Warrior .... Princess", and I liked it not because of the tried and true story of the pauper and the prince.... I liked it because of Lucy Lawless' expressions

when she was Diana. Transcripts do NOT do this episode justice.

Well...

I stand by EVERYTHING I said on page 7... except to say I did NOT "like" Warrior.. Princess... Tramp".

I LOVED it! :rofl::rommie::lol::mallory:

Everything from the set up of Gabrielle being thrown into the dungeon, and not knowing why for most of the ep...

Gabrielle: “Come on, Warrior Princess. (She's beating up her prison cot with a stick) Take that! Ow, ah! (To the Warrior Princess who's just come into her cell) I know what the plan is: You’re trying to drive me insane!”

To Joxer hitting on Xena, instead of Meg...

Xena: “Joxer? What are you doing here?”
Joxer: “I hate to tell you this, Xena, but-- All right, I might
as well spit it out. Princess Diana wants me.”
Xena: “She what?”
Joxer: “Listen, I can see the pain on your face, but really,
there’s plenty of me to go around. And um, there’s no reason why we can’t be adults about this and have a little fun.” (As Xena turns to walk away, Joxer reaches down and grabs her "ass ets". )
Xena: “Are you suicidal?” :guffaw:
Joxer:
“Oh, don’t worry, Xena. I got just what you need, and plenty of it, too.” (Joxer comes after Xena with obvious intent to do some serious fondling)
Xena: (Xena knocks Joxer into next week!) “You got some explaining to do and you can start by telling me where Gabrielle is.”
Joxer: “In the dungeon, where you put her!”
Xena: “What?”

To that tramp Meg, who's upbringing figured as significantly in the woman she became, as it did with Xena and Diana. Her story of a dead alcoholic Father, an overly attentive boyfriend of her Mother's, and a Mother who died when the child was only 11, reminds us that even with all the tragedies that befell our Xena she can still say "there but for the Grace of God go I."

When you consider what other things we'll learn about her in the future... the ending of the ep was quite prescient.

Joxer: (Trying to get Gabby and Xena to leave so he can speak with Meg alone.)“Get, get going, get going. (To Meg, loudly so the other women can hear.) Well, um, so long, Meg.”
Meg: “So long, Joxer. " (Whispers so the others CAN'T hear.) Ditch the broads and double back-I’ll leave the kitchen door open for you.”
Joxer: “Right!"
---------------------------
---------------------------
Joxer: (He's running down the road after our friends)“Hey, Xena, Gabrielle, wait up! I uh-- Listen! I got some things to ah, attend to.”
Gabrielle: “Fine.”
Joxer: “So, I won’t be able to join you.”
Gabrielle: “That’s OK.”
Joxer:
“You sure? ‘Cause I know how much you need a real warrior to watch your back, you know?”
Xena: (With an acute sense of hearing, and an even better understanding of the human race.) “Joxer, she won’t wait forever.” :guffaw:

Joxer, you are lucky that Gabrielle didn't take a "shine" to Meg.

Thanks:)

As you might imagine the subtexters not to keen on Perdicus, especially Gabby's post honeymoon 'Not I know what true love is' assertion. But then he get's killed as practically everyone Gabby knows does, she really is the black widow.

As for Xena I think it's fairly certain that she's actually Ares daughter and that's where she gets her powers from but we'll talk about that ep when we get to it

When you think about it, its amazing Xena lasted as long as she did. ;) Even Joxer wasn't safe!

I don't understand the anti-Perdicus sentiment in the Xena/Gabby fanbase. I see their (G/P) relationship as sweet and of course tragic. To my way of thinking, its better for Gabrielle to feel love elsewhere first so she can better interpret her feelings for the Warrior Princess when they begin to surface. Right now I suspect she's still in the (as she called it in season 3) "Warrior Princess Haze", where she loves the idolized version of the WP.

Oh fantastic! I'm up to "Intimate Strangers" tonight!

Episode 31... season 2 #7 "Intimate Strangers"

An aside, first. The ending of "Intimate Strangers", and the next ep "Ten little Warlords" along with "The Quest" later in the season are perfect examples of the XWP PTB's making lemonade out of a lemon. Our star, Lucy Lawless, broke her pelvis in multiple areas doing a stunt for Jay Leno's Tonight show back in the 90's, and was out of work for over a month then on light duty only.

As has been mentioned upthread, Hudson Leick's turn as Xena was awe inspiring, and the additional moral/psychological stress it placed on Gabrielle in this and the next ep was striking. Xena herself would face a similar conundrum in late season 3 when the person she loved the most in the world, and the person she hated looked the same.

Now... as they say... "On with the show!" :bolian:

The "teaser" certainly lived up to its name this week... teasing not just the subtexters in the audience...

... Gabby looks to be nearly cradling Xena or crawling into her lap when she wakens Xena from another nightmare. The Bard then coos to the WP, “Xena-- come on. You can’t go on like this.”

...but also teasing everyone by making us worry as much as Xena about whether we are awake "this time" or still dreaming.

Guilt is a bitch, Xena, isn't it?

After 10 years as an evil-doer, and a year and a half as a good-doer... don't you know that by now?

Great ep with my fav villainess, Callisto herself. Or, as we discover soon... Callisto as Xena "herself".

I loved how well the two actresses mimicked each other. Like Gabrielle during the fighting lesson, I really did come to see Callisto IN the body of Xena...although to be honest I think Hudson's version of Xena was more consistent than Lawless's Callisto.

(Poor Argo. She was really :wtf: in this ep!)

I loved that despite being given the opportunity to escape Tarturas and lead Ares' army into battle for world dominion, all Callisto could think about was getting back at Xena. Funny... despite her plans in "Return of Callisto" to get back at Xena by killing Gabrielle... Callisto completely forgot about that option. Instead she wasted time by going after the villagers of Amphipolis AND Xena's Mom. Perhaps Callisto had realized by then that Gabrielle was either "old news" or wasn't "AS" important to Xena (at this stage) as her Mother, so her focus of revenge shifted.

Who knows?

Funny things in this ep?

The way Xena looked when Joxer asked her if she could cut him down from the rafters, without dropping him on his face. "No."

The way "Callisto as Xena" looked, brushing off her warrior garb after returning from an afternoon tryst with Ares.
To view this content we will need your consent to set third party cookies.
For more detailed information, see our cookies page.

The way Joxer jumped everytime he saw "Xena AS Callisto".

Sweet things in this ep?

The way Gabrielle, Xena's squire/friend, brings a blanket over to the woman standing watch, protecting her from the cold.

The way "Xena as Callisto" tends to the wounded Argo.

Even the way "X as C" thanks Joxer for putting his life on the line to protect Argo from someone he thought WAS Callisto. (Lucky for him... she wasn't)

Scary things in this ep?

When "Callisto as Xena" is trying to get Gabrielle to wound her opponent fatally in a sparring session that leaves the body of Xena on the ground and the heart of the bard shred into pieces.

When Callisto as Xena went after Argo.

Saddest things in this ep?

Gabrielle can't dream since Perdicus' murder.

Xena can't sleep without dreaming of Callisto's death.

"Xena as Callisto" nearly dies at the hands of her best friend, Gabrielle.

Xena as Xena: “I let her die, Gabrielle. At the time, I thought it was justice, but, I don’t know now.”
Gabrielle: “This is such a mess. You wish you hadn’t killed her; Joxer wishes he had killed her; and I wish she had never been born. I guess Callisto won after all.”

No, Gabrielle, she didn't win.

In fact, she can never win as long as you remember one simple thing.

Gabrielle: “Hold it! Don’t move. Who are you?”
Xena as Callisto: (Looks down and sees the lithe body belonging to Callisto) “It’s me, Gabrielle ..... Xena.”
Gabrielle: “How do I know that?”
Xena as Callisto: “A long time ago, you told me the cycle of hate has to end-- and the only way to end it is through love. It’s a hard lesson to learn. Callisto couldn’t possibly know or understand that.”
Gabrielle: “Xena.”

Indeed.

Brilliant ep and very interesting to compare it later to the Buffy ep 'Who are you?', Hudson gives a great performance as Xena and vice versa. My favourite bit is where Callisto-as-Xena asks one of Callisto's goons if he understands her instructions.

"No" he replies terrified "But it will be done"

Ahhh, loved "Callisto as Xena"... and how silly Theodorus was when he threw his sword down, thinking if he wasn't a threat he would be safe. :guffaw:

Also loved how CasX screwed over Ares.

Callisto as-Xena: “You?! Forbid me?! No one, god or man, forbids me from doing anything. All my anger-- all my hatred-- it’s for Xena, alone. When I’m done with her, you can have what’s left. I won’t care.”
Ares: “This was not my plan.”
Callisto as-Xena: “Funny, it was always mine. Yes, I used you. But you can still claim victory if you let me finish what I came here for.”

episode 32... season 2's #8 "Ten Little Warlords".

Xena is still trapped in Callisto's body, as Lucy Lawless recurperated from her pelvic fractures. This is the ep that convinced me Hudson had been watching wayyyyy too much Xena, since her rendition was spot on!

Interesting little tale about the need for a God of War, and the old "better the devil you know" theory. I liked that Xena was so resistant to Ares' suggestions, until Little sweet Gabrielle turned into a feral kitten.

(Yet another campfire scene, this one not so "relaxed".)
Gabrielle: “You’re right, you know. You can’t trust Ares. Now, here-- there are many gods on Mt. Olympus, and there’s got to be one that can help switch you back into your own body. Of course, you know, he won’t make it, not with those warlords. Hmm! Who wouldn’t want to make their rep by wasting the god of war? Or ex-, or otherwise? I hope that it’s slow and painful-- a taste of his own medicine.”
Xena as Callisto: “Try and get some sleep.”
Gabrielle: “Who can sleep?! Now, I know what it’s like to be you! It’s-- it’s exhilirating! Always alert! Ready for a fight! Trouble could break out anytime!”
Xena-C: “Gabrielle, get a grip. You lose control now and there’s no turning back.” :vulcan:
Gabrielle: “You seem to be controlling yourself pretty well.”
Xena-C: “I’ve lived with anger longer. Like it or not, it’s part of me.”
(Xena stands up and walks towards Gabrielle.)
Gabrielle:Get your hands off me.” :klingon:
(Brief staring match ensues)

Xena-C: “Do you remember that poem, ‘Elysian Fields,’ you used to like so much? Every time you feel angry, I want you to recite it.”
(Gabrielle turns away, closes her eyes and starts to recite under great strain)
Gabrielle: “Elysian fields, calm and green; love-birds singing, so serene.”
Xena-C:
“Gabrielle-- I didn’t mean right now.”
(Gabby spins back and practically shouts at the Warrior Princess!)
Gabrielle: “I am boiling mad, right now-- :scream: at you! I’ve got this overwhelming desire to just knock you upside your irritating blonde... (Xena grabs her young "squire" and pushes her back, quickly silencing the young woman before delivering her judgement.) ..."
Xena-C:
“I want you to wait here, tomorrow. I’m going with Ares.”
Gabrielle: “You’re what?”
Xena-C:
“That’s my decision-- end of discussion.”

Loved the fact that its XENA carrying the weight of the "irritating blonde epithet!

As always, loved the interaction between Xena and Ares... and loved the way he teased her about how wild Callisto was during their trysts...

Xena-C: “A dagger and a mace-- to kill the monster. It doesn’t take an oracle to see that Sisyphus expects us to use them against each other. Take your shirt off. (She's about to dress his wound received from their last battle with their fellow "warlords") What?”
Ares: “Well, you’re in her body but you still have your touch-- warm, firm, passionate-- yet, at the same time, gentle. Now, Callisto-- she’s all animal. You know, she-- starts like a cold fish, but-- you press the right buttons-- hold on, it’s quite a ride. Mind you, my experience with her is-- rather unique. She was in your body at the time.”
Xena-C
: “When I get my body back, I gotta remember to take a long bath.” :guffaw:

Its nice to see Ares humbled once in a while

Xena-C: “Are you all right?”
Ares: “I’ve been hanged, swung over a fire, and nearly shishkabobbed on razor-sharp spikes, yeah! How do you mortals get from day to day?! You know?!”

Sounds like an average day with the Warrior Princess, to me. ;)

Of course... everyone needs a good looking, chiseled God Of War clad in black leather and sporting flowing hair, right???

Xena-C: “Ares, duck!” (Xena throws his sword into the chest of the last warlord trying to kill Ares.)
Ares: “You saved me. I won’t forget.”
(Ares has pulled his sword from the warlord, and examines it closely.)
Xena-C: “Yes, you will.”
Gabrielle: (As she watches the bum in tatters turn back into a walking advertisement for testosterone, Gabby observes...) “He’s ba-ack.”

But this is XENA WARRIOR PRINCESS, which means it can't all be about Xena and Ares.... it has to have something for the Xena Gabrielle fanclub if not slashclub.

In the teaser.... we see Xena as Callisto from the knees down as she walks across their campsite to waken Gabrielle.

Xena-in-Callisto: “Gabrielle, wake up. (Gabby JUMPS when she sees THAT blond face staring down at her!) It’s all right, it’s me.”
Gabrielle: “Xena-- you know, I don’t know if I’m gonna get used to this. It’s so weird having your best friend in the body of your worst enemy. Could you dye your hair?”
Xena-C: “Shh!” (Xena hears someone moving through the woods towards their location. She grabs Gabrielle and pulls her away from the campsite just before the intruder appears.)
Gabrielle: (As she goes out of frame) “Hey! It’s only a suggestion. :rommie:

And in the final scene, as we watch Xena AS Callisto slowly walk along the beach with Gabrielle...

Gabrielle: “Xena-- if Ares doesn’t keep his word, and he doesn’t switch you back-- I’ll be there for you, no matter whose body you’re in.”
Xena-C: “Even a snake-haired gorgon monster?”
Gabrielle: “I’ll be there; I just won’t look at you.”
Xena-C: “Gabrielle, I’m proud of you. You felt the anger but you fought it. It takes a lot more strength to resist the violence-- than to surrender to it.”
Gabrielle: “Thank you. Now, if I can just survive the boat-ride with Joxer, I’ll be fine.”
Xena as Callisto's voice changes: (We can't see her as she has dropped behind Gabrielle as she says) “Trust me... you’ll be fine... :techman: and so will I.”

(Gabby turns around at the sound of THAT voice and sees her best friend standing there)
Gabrielle: “Xena, it’s you, right-- not Callisto?”
Xena: “It’s me. Go on, test me?”
(As they resume their walk down the beach...)
Gabrielle: “Whose body's worse being trapped in than Callisto’s?”
Xena: “A snake-haired gorgon-- but not by much.”
Gabrielle:
“It is you.”

'Girls just want to have fun', bring on the slash and the Buffy fanfic crossovers (one theory is that Callisto gets her incredible abilities because she's the Slayer of her age. Another is that she's also Ares daughter).

Okay, remembering that I don't watch Vampire stuff... shouldn't it be Xena that's the slayer of her epoch? Xena was busy killing bad guys, and Callisto was busy killing everyone.

Not all slayers are good. Sometimes they're insane or go evil. Faith is the main example of that. Then there was also the insane slayer in "Damage."
