On the DVD's you also can find the commentary of Tapert and Manheim as they watch the ep, with a lot of nice insight into everything from the real difference between Gabrielle and Xena...

(That no matter how often she's been hurt, been fooled, Gabrielle is still strong enough/brave enough to keep putting her heart "out there", Vs Xena who's more of a "Fool me once..." kind of gal, and she'll never give you a second chance to fool her.)

... to inside stories re: Lucy walking away from a "nude" Renee at an inopportune moment while shooting the final scene,

...to inside dirt on how "unhappy" the STAR was to have her husband shoot her in such an "unflattering position" in the opening teaser,

... to Rob's Plan" to make Renee look absolutely beautiful throughout this ep (a definate contrast to what he ended up doing to his Star/wife)

...to simple explanations re: why Xena's sword was on the wrong shoulder in a shot (he had the sightlines backwards and had to "flip the shot" to get Xena looking in the correct direction)

... to behind the scenes stuff like "what" Rob says to his wife as she's trying to get into the "proper mood" for the above scene... (Chris tells how they laughed listening to the dailies of that scene, as they can SEE Lucy- and HEAR Rob coach off screen "You see Gabrielle in the arms of "another" man." I can attest this is a funny clip as its in the deleted scenes at the end of the season... Lucy looks so "Xena serious" then realizes what hubby said and bursts out laughing! )

...to confirmation at who/what Aiden was, and who he wasn't. Not a God, was "just" a "villian" that wanted to use Gabrielle's "power" to free himself from where he was contained, that HE was the one who killed his wife and child, that he was actively trying to get Xena to "leave" so he'd have no distractions from his conquest of Gabrielle's soul...

It was also nice to hear what Rob thought he did "wrong" or should have done better, and that he didn't shrink from responsibility (though he WAS willing to "share" it ;) )

What did I like?

The Ying/Yang motifs throughout the ep (door, window, bed), and their corollary in the two women. Xena being dark with a touch of light, and Gabrielle being light with a touch of dark. Gabrielle becoming more "blissed/passive" and Xena becoming ever more agitated/active. :klingon:

I liked how the teaser held another reminder of the crucifixion vision, and that for once Gabrielle was more concerned for her friend than interested in disproving it. The vision came back many times in this ep, unbeknowst to Gabby... which were very integral to the plot. Her changed demeanor towards Xena was so striking (solicitous this time, not dismissive) that it made me wonder if she purposefully undertook this journey towards India to put distance between her and that mountain Xena saw in the distance during "Past Imperfect".

I even liked the question Gabrielle put to Xena in the teaser... do you fight because its right to defend good, or do you fight BECAUSE you need to fight, and use "defending good" as an excuse. (I guess she's watched "Dexter" ?)

And of course I like that she's come up with the answer by the end of the ep... on her own.

As for those who like X/G banter, you get it in spades in the teaser (You smiled..."), and ARE reminded in the closer that Xena isn't above "torturing" her friend... (Check out Xena's face when Gabby asks, "Do I really have hands like a sailor?" :guffaw: )

And for those like S-5 who like Gabby "in the flesh", this ep has the (2nd?) most famous hot tub scene in 6 years of Xena Tv ("This is bliss". )

I certainly liked the ep, although I agree with Rob Tapert.... I could have done without the teeth and the lizard eyes on Lucy in the final battle.

1:32 "famous" hot tub scene.

Loved Paradise Found's teaser.

Xena's Voice: "Gabrielle, I'm all for your spiritual quests, and India is a fine place to go, but-- remind me why we decided to take the scenic route."

Gabrielle's Voice: "Come on. Local legends say that these mountains are a holy place."

Xena's Voice: "No, no, no, no, no. I don't care about the local legends. I'm talking about the local thugs who tried to cut us up in the pass."

Gabrielle: (Gabby is turned away, dressed only in a fur cloak as she threads a bone needle to operate on Xena) "Well, I'd apologize-- again. The truth is, I think you
enjoyed it."

Xena: (In her warrior garb, with a good 4 inch horizontal gash across her left thigh) "Having my leg gashed open?"

Gabrielle: "No, having a good reason to bust some head."

Xena: "That's ridiculous." (Gabby comes across the cave to stand in front of Xena to stitch up her leg. NOW you know why Gabby was so good at stitching in "Is there a Doctor in the house" season 1 She's had a lot of practice!)

Gabrielle: (Rolls eyes up to Xena as she stitches) "You smiled."

Xena: "What?"

Gabrielle: "When that big guy came at you, and you tossed him at the
other three-- you smiled."

Xena: "I winced. He was big." (Note, she's NOT wincing as Gabby threads the large boney needle through her wound without benefit of anesthesia!)

Gabrielle: (smiles herself) "You smiled."

Xena: "I was relieved!"

Gabrielle: (Gabby won't let the argument go, because she knows for once she has Xena.) "You still smiled."

Xena: "Oh-- give me that. (Xena grabs ancient suture / needle from Gabby and continues to sew her leg.) You got hands like a sailor. (Thinks back to the fight) It was a thing of beauty. Did you see how they fell over? Just like a game of dominoes."

Gabrielle: ( She walks away to shed her fur cloak and get dressed in the bilious green sports bra) "Yeah. It wasn't a game to them."

Xena: "Let me get this straight. You're standing up for a bunch of thugs who tried to rob and kill us?"

Gabrielle: (looks over her shoulder) "Those guys were scum-- I admit that. I just wonder if-- maybe your-- fighting for good has more to do with the fighting
than the good part."

Xena: (Oh, THAT stung. Xena looks thoughtful) "You think my fighting for good is a cover for something darker? (She seriously considers the idea) I don't know."

Gabrielle: (Turns towards Xena, still thoughtful) "It's funny. We come to places like this-- you know, the spirtual places? Looking for some sort of answer. Makes you wonder."

Xena: "Wonder what?"

Gabrielle: "If instead of reaching out-- maybe we should be looking in."

(Flashforward to winter crucifixion scene we see Gabrielle [Mouths]: "I love you, Xena.")

(Gabrielle has walked across the cave and is now in Xena's face as Xena's consciousness "comes back" to the present.)

Gabrielle: (Solicitous, and quietly) "Was it that vision again? Xena, would you just forget that? You always say that we control our own destiny, right?"

Xena: "Right. (hears noise from the back of the cave) What was that?"

Gabrielle: "Just-just stay here. Don't break those stitches. I'll be right back."

Xena: (Xena admires her handiwork on the stitches, then thinks she hears something from the direction Gabby disappeared. Picking up a torch, she limps towards the back of the cave and finds only a deep hole. She drops her torch into its depths, then finally drops herself down the "rabbit hole" calling as she falls ...) "Gabrielle?! Gabrielle? Gabrielle?!"

Episode 82 (my count) season 4 #14 "Devi"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devi

I like to pretend I know something about the Olympian Gods due to all those history classes I took in highschool, and Wonder Woman comic books I read in the 80's (George Perez rulz!) but what I know about India/Hinduism is based on a PBS show I watched 20 years ago with Joseph Campbell... and I NEED to watch THAT again.

This ep claims that "Devi" is a healing deity... while wikipedia says it means "Goddess".. and is synonymous with "Shakti", the female half of the divine. For those of us who know what's coming "next week", I find that description of "Shakti" very interesting.

But I digress.

Our girls have arrived in India, and Gabrielle is having a grand old time playing the tourist, watching fire-eating sword swallowers, cobras mesmerized by flutes, people walking on coals, a man sleeping on a bed of nails, and a crowd gathering about a Greecian street magician.

Isn't it nice the way all these people in India speak Greek... or how the girls are so facile at picking up new languages when they travel???? (HEY! At least in Star Trek we PRETEND that the universal translator really works! )

Anyway, while watching the magician, "someone" expresses disbelief and she's pushed up to the stage to "prove" that there's no "trick" in his illusion... which our Warrior Princess does to the magician's satisfaction. As the performance goes on there appears to be a glitch after his assistant disappears and suddenly we have body parts raining down on the magician. He collects them all, tosses them into a basket, calls out several magical words and "Voila"... the basket opens to discover his assistant, whole once again.

Smiles, applause, "how the heck did he do that" looks all around... and then we see the assistant's eyes... and ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE! Xena naturally vaults herself into the middle of the commotion, protecting the magician from his now demon possessed assistant.

Teaser ends.

Eventually Xena Knocks the crazed sword wielding girl half way across the courtyard, into the magician and both end up prostrate on the ground with the girl now going into convulsions. Gabrielle runs up to grab her, and suddenly we see a spirit fly out of the girl's body, circle the courtyard and "disappear". The girl is back to normal, as are her eyes (thank the Goddess), and the people watching are now convinced that Gabrielle is a Devi and cast out the demon. They are equally convinced the magician is evil and brought the demon to their village in the first place. So while Gabrielle distracts everyone, Xena gets the magician out of harms way.

Yeah, its a little complex.

And that's the easy part.

A couple interesting side notes about this ep.

Last "week" we see Gabrielle get very up close and personal (NOT sexual) with Aiden, the swami that ended up trying to consume all her goodness as he taught her the ways of yoga. This week, we see Xena get up close and personal (NOT sexual) with Eli, the street magician who just wants to rediscover the healing power that once saved a family friend years ago. To do it he tries to secretly hypnotize our WP, but quickly learns THAT'S a lost cause! I liked the relationship that eventually develops between the two, and I liked how he wasn't "heroic" from the get go. Just another being, trying to find his way.

The first half of the ep has Gabrielle wondering about this new power she has, to heal the blind/cast out demons etc... then we see her accept not only the power but the worship of the villagers and the pearls/crowns/jewels they are showering on her.

Some of the best moments in this ep are when Xena and Gabrielle talk about her transformation.

The end of their first day in town, they're in a rented room and Gabrielle is given Xena one of her trademarked shoulder massages (last seen at the beginning of "Locked up/Tied Down" )...

Xena: "Aw, yeah... that's great. (Xena smiles) Maybe you are a Devi after all, huh?"
Gabrielle: "Maybe I am. (Steps back and wonders) Xena, something happened to me. And I've been trying to think of how to tell you."
Xena: (Slight concern as she turns to Gabrielle) "What? What happened?"
Gabrielle: "I did it. Xena, I healed someone. A man came to me. He had lost his eye. Xena, I brought back his sight."
Xena: "Gabrielle-- "
Gabrielle: "I can't explain it. It was real, Xena. I'm wondering, I know that you had a spirit inside you. (HEY... WHAT"S SHE TALKING ABOUT???) What does that feel like?"
Xena: "Is that what's happened? `Cause, Gabrielle, there are spirits that are good and bad, but they're smart, and sometimes you can't tell one from another."
Gabrielle: "Whatever this is, it wasn't bad, Xena. How could it be? It was beautiful. I healed! That is all I have ever wanted to do. That is all I've ever dreamed about doing. Now that I have this abillity I think I understand that power the power to control life................ (she walks away to look out the window at the night sky) and death."

The first morning after her first miracles... Xena is sitting up in their bedroom, meditating, when she calls out to Gabrielle...

Xena: "Gabrielle, are you asleep?"
Gabrielle: (eyes open, rolls over) "Not anymore. What's up?"
Xena: "Us at least, we should be. Come on, get up. We can go do som,e yoga, get somethin' to eat. We can be on the road by noon."
Gabrielle: "Yoga? We're gonna do yoga. As in, you and me? [Chuckles] OK... who are you, and what have you done with Xena?"
Xena:
"Ha-ha."
Gabrielle: "I know what you're doing. You're checking to see if I'm the same Gabrielle as always. Admit it, Xena, you're afraid the power I have is bad."
Xena: "When it comes to special powers, I've learned you can't be too careful."
Gabrielle: "You're right. Relax. I bet-- I bet it was a fluke. Most people have probably forgotten it."
Xena: "Well-- maybe you're right." (The two women walk out on the 2nd story parapet and immediately see a multitude of people in the courtyard below)
Men's Voices: "Look! There she is!" "The Devi !"
Woman's Voice: "Praise her! Praise the Devi !"
(Xena can see that Gabrielle is basking in the adulation of a power they still don't understand)

Xena has learned from Eli, the Greecian street Magician, that there is a demon known as Tataka (Not to be confused with Kaltaka, the Horde word for "water". ) who healed the crippled only to send them into battle to die against the god Rama. Tataka was blonde, according to the paintings on the temple walls, and man she LOVED her pearls since she's draped in them.

When Xena comes "home" that night to their rented room, she finds Gabrielle literally draped in pearls, with a gold crown on her head, and sitting before an ancient "mirror".

Gabrielle?: (Turns to look up to Xena) "That bad, huh? OK, it's a bit much, I know. What can I do? These are all gifts from the people that I've healed. Now, how can I refuse that? Besides I think the more that I dress like them, the more they seem to turn to me for my help. I mean underneath all this I'm still me."
Xena: "Oh thank goodness. For a moment there, you had me worried."
Gabrielle?: "What's this?" (takes a metal canister from Xena)
Xena: "A little insurance I took out, sacred water from the Ganges."
Gabrielle?: "Insurance? Against what? Against me?"
Xena: "Gabrielle."
Gabrielle?: "Agains my being a demon?"
Xena:
"That's ridiculous."
Gabrielle?: "Is it? Why else would you have it? This is a test. Fine. You wanna test me? Let's do it. (She uncaps the canister and starts shaking the water all over her body) Let's see if sacred water eats through my skin, shall we? Huh? Am I sizzling, now?! Am I burning?! Am I still evil incarnate, Xena?"
Xena:
(She's ticked off! But why?) "It was not a test. It couldn't be. Ganges water only burns in the hands of a priest or exorcist. (Holds up a bota sytled bag) I took all the holy water `cause I knew that Eli wouldn't leave town without some."
Gabrielle?: (Contrite as Xena tosses the bag to the floor) "I'm sorry. I just know you have doubts about me. And I tell you that this power is good, that it's my calling. And instead of being happy for me, you think that I'm evil."
Xena:
"Gabrielle, Eli told me about the picture in the tem-- "
Gabrielle?: (Accusatory!) "Eli? You're taking the word of a street magician over mine?"
Xena: (Contrite herself) "It's not that."
Gabrielle?: "Why is this so hard for you to accept? Xena, I do not hurt people. I heal them." (She starts to cry)
Xena: (Xena turns to mush and hugs Gabrielle? to her chest) "Hey. Oh, no, don`t-don't cry. Don't cry, now. I'm sorry. [Whispers] I'm sorry."

And that's the last time I'll use "Gabrielle ?"

Xena saves Eli from Tataka's henchmen the next morning, and admits to herself the woman sharing her room isn't Gabrielle....

Xena: "Gabrielle. Gabrielle. Wake up."
Tataka: "What? What is it?"
Xena: "Eli's been attacked. If I hadn't shown up and scared away whoever did it, he'd be dead by now. As it is... "
Tataka: "He's alive?"
Xena: "Barely. I need you to come and heal him. If he dies, so does our best chance of finding out who's behind all of this."
Tataka: "Take me to him. I should probably tell Ravi. He might send out a search party or.. . Ravi! Ravi!"
Servant: "Forgive me, Devi, but Ravi's not back. May I be of service?"
Tataka: "He's not back?"
Servant: "No."
Tataka: "No. Thank you. So, Eli's hurt? Is he, Xena?"
Xena: (The jig is up, Xena.) "Not as bad as Ravi... Tataka."
Tataka: "Well, it's a good thing I sent backup."

Xena splits and finds Eli has saved himself by running away. The only trouble is, she needs Eli, the true healing Devi to save her firend Gabrielle. Whe he still won't return to the village she demands an alternative...

Xena: "I thought we had an agreement. I saved your life. You save Gabrielle's."
Eli: "I can't do it. Believe me, I wanna help you. But I can't."
Xena: "Then there's no choice. We have to have an exorcism."
Eli: "Exorcism?"
Xena: "It's either that, or kill her, and I won't kill Gabrielle."

The final battle is something we don't get to see all that much on Xena: Warrior Princess. Gabrielle fighting Xena. Gabrielle actively and powerfully trying to KILL Xena.

Xena: "Looking for me?"
Tataka: "Ha! Not anymore. [Laughs] An exorcism?! Really, Xena? Now, don't you think that's the pot calling the kettle...? You want me out? You're gonna have to kill this sweet, little body to do it. I don't think you can."
Xena:"Watch me."

Oh, I know, it WASN'T Gabrielle, it was Tataka in that fight... but even under the really bad eyeshadow, everyone and their sister could see WHO it was... even Xena could see WHO it was as she tried NOT to kill her best friend...

until...

until nothing else could be done.

Tataka is on the ground, and Xena is standing over her with her sword, arms raise high ready to plunge it into the chest of her best friend, her only friend who's been co-opted by a demon, when suddenly a soft voice escapes, a different voice comes from the demon's taunting lips...

Gabrielle: Xena.

... and the Warrior hesitates as Eli arrives and cries out to let him try to save her friend.

Tataka kicks the sword from Xena's hands, then grabs it as she charges Eli to kill him, her only true enemy. Xena is hot on her trail and ends up putting the pinch on her.

Xena: (To Eli as Gabrielle lays between them) "We have thirty seconds."
Tataka: (To Eli) "Charlatan! Fraud! Who are you to challenge me?! (Softer) The power you seek it's a lie."
Eli:
(Giving up before he even tries) "I failed."
Xena: (Grabs him roughly) "Eli, don't believe her! Keep going! Eli you find that power and you save my friend."
Eli:
(Looks up to the heavens as he touches Gabrielle) "Abba, help me."

[Tataka's spirit is exorcised as Gabrielle goes through a serious of convulsions).]

Gabrielle [Whispers]: (Reaches her hand up to Xena's face) "Xena."
Xena [Softly]: (Cradles her friend as she looks gratefully at Eli) "It's all right. It's all right. You're gonna be all right."

Hey, I liked it. :bolian:

This first India ep gave us several things, first and obviously a Xena/Gabrielle knockdown drag out brawl which is something new and different. Heck, that was even more powerful than their tussle on the top of the cliff, before they fell into Illusia!

The ep also reminded us that at her core, Gabrielle is different from Xena. In case we didn't pick it up from other eps, Gabrielle likes healing/nurturing more than busting heads and breaking bones. One of the reasons she stayed with Xena through that first year was because she was busy healing a certain Warrior Princess! (She stayed after that because she was hooked on a certain Warrior Princess. ;))

I also like Eli, and this was a good introduction for him. I especially liked that hug between Eli and Xena as he was leaving town in their final scene. It reminded us that the two of them had been through a lot together, and it reminded Eli that if he ever needed a favor from Xena, he only had to ask. She owed him. She owed him "big time". :techman:

Episode 83 season 4 #15 "Between the Lines"

Opening shot:
"What we sow in life,
We reap in our future lives.
This is our Karma"
(From the Xena "Blue" Scroll…author unknown)
Boy. This week's title is open to so many interpretations.

Steven Sears' comment in the DVD interviews tells us "Between the Lines" ... (sorry, can't find them on youtube yet.) refers to the Mehndi... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehndi .

But I digress, again.

And I really shouldn't, since TPTB have done something they rarely do in the teaser... and its something I (and Gabrielle) really like.

They took Xena out of her leathers, and put her in a costume more natural with her surroundings.

Gabrielle: (Standing in an outdoor market, looking over some merchandise) "Xena, it's not as if people will stare at you."
Xena's Voice: (From behind a curtain) "I'm not worried about that."
Gabrielle: "It's the latest rage in India. You know what they say, "When in Rome'"
Xena: (Briefly pokes her head out from behind the curtain, she's wearing a gold & jeweled chain encircling the head)"Oh, please."
Gabrielle: (Chagrined) "OK, different analogy. Um-m-m-m-m-- when you want to fly with eagles-- "
Xena: (Out steps Xena, barefoot in a blue and red gown with pantaloons? )"Don't dress like a turkey?"
Gabrielle: (She likes it!) "Ooh."
Xena:
(Unsure) "I don't know, Gabrielle. Look, this is just not me."
Gabrielle: (walks around the Warrior princess as she gives her opinion) "No, no. It-it is you. Uh, the color, the jewelry. It's, um it says, um `Casual'. It says-- 'Sexy'. It says..."
Xena: (She sudddenly jumps 8 feet up into the air, doing a circling side kick as if to check for fighting mobility.) "She-e-e-e-yah-h-h-h!" (She's very satisfied as she comes back down to the ground, and NOW everyone IS looking at her!)
Gabrielle: (smiles) "It says a lot. Glad to see you're getting into the swing of things, Xena."

Xena's attention is captured by a procession going by, and like any good travelers wanting to immerse themselves into the culture, they follow it to a funeral bier that's burning. A wrapped body is tossed onto the fire, which is something the girls have seen time and again in their own homeland. What they haven't seen, however, is a living woman threatened with the same fate. Xena intercedes, and after an interesting fight (interesting due to the weapon Xena uses) she and Gabby run off with Naima. They're cornered in the backstreets and take refuge in a building. Xena searches for another exit as Gabby locks the door and piles furniture against it.

What Xena doesn't expect from the woman she rescued, is to be followed into the back room where Naima suddenly starts performing a wordless dance. Before she knows it, the Indian woman's henna decorated skin starts to glow, and light reaches out to Xena... then Xena seems to implode and her light is sucked into the designs upon Naima's chest before traveling down a Dr Who styled space time corridor. Once IN the corridor, we see scenes from Xena's past and Xena's future and FINALLY we hear from Naima herself.

Naima's Voice: "Have courage, Xena. I'm sending you on a journey into your future-- a journey to save your karmic circle."

(The idea behind Karma, the circle of life: http://www.articlesbase.com/philosophy-articles/the-idea-behind-karma-the-circle-of-life-416772.html )

And then we see an old dark Indian woman drapped in a red gown and a braided gold cap, leaning on a cane. She's looking up at the sky... and her face starts to contort, to morph into one we know and love. Its Xena. As she comes to, she realizes she NEEDS that cane in her hand, just to stand. A real bitchy Warlord is standing before her, and she snears at Xena.

[A Future Life]

Khindin: "All this talk is tiring, Arminestra. You wanted to negotiate. But I've heard nothing that appeals to me."
Xena-in-Arminestra: "What? (She looks around, and sees the remnents of a spear she jammed into a stone pole during her fight to free Naima. The stone pole is half gone.) "That spear, I put it there." (then she looks into the shield leaning on the ground, and in its reflective surface she sees the old Indian woman everyone else sees, she raises her hand to her face, and sees the old woman do the same.

Teaser ends.

And we thought LAST WEEK's teaser was confusing. (Just you wait till the one that comes NEXT WEEK!)

So, as one can surmise by now, the ep is about reincarnation, a theme that Xena hits upon several times in its series run.

I really like how they did it this time, even if it didn't make much sense sometimes.

I'm sorry the DVD interviews haven't been uploaded onto youtube yet, since the writer makes a nice comment about Xena and Gabrielle, in relation to a Paul Williams "Muppet Movie" song. "There's not a word yet, for old friends who've "just" met." Xena and Gabrielle's karmic lives have been intertwined throughout all of history, they come together, make beautiful designs, then part and run parallel until they meet again, and make more desgins. When they meet, they don't say, "I'm Gabrielle/ you're Xena", they just say "I know you, and I know I have to be with you/follow you".

So Xena is in the future, as an old woman facing down a vicious Warrior who's army has just taken this village.

Khindin: "Is the great peacemaker deaf as well?"
Xena-in-Arminstra: (confused) "Arminestra? (looks at the people taken captive) What is your business with these people?"
Khindin: "My business, my business is to own them, life and soul. Kill the men. Capture the rest."
Xena-in-Armnestra: "Wait a minute!"
Khindin:
"Uh. Well the mother of peace has a backbone after all. Interesting but I have an army and all you have are a handful of villagers, and your message of peace. The odds are in my favor, I think. Kill them."
[Fight: as flaming balls are catapulted into the village by an opposing force, and fighters come swooping in to do battle with Khindin's soldiers]
Khindin:
(To her army as she draws her own curved sword) "To arms!"
Resistance fighter: "Ready?! Aim?! Fire!"
Shakti: (A gold turbaned Warrior comes riding in on a horse, shouting to his men) "Find Arminestra! Find the Mother of Peace!"

(The fight continues, and Xena can't just stand there. She picks up a sword and tries to use it but its knocked from her hands by a passing fighter. She then goes up behind Khindin and grabs the woman from behind... and once she does... Khindin's face contorts and morphs into one we've come to know and hate.)

Xena-in-Arminstra: "Alti?"
Alti-in Khindi: "Xena! I knew I'd find your soul, eventually."

ETA: Naima on the scene soundtrack:

Luckily just about now the resistance fighters including their leader Shakti come to her rescue. Xena being Xena doesn't want to leave the battle yet, but is finally convinced when she sees Shakti fall to a crossbolt from Alti. Shakti escapes the field of battle on horseback, as does Xena.

There's a great scene where "The Mother Of Peace" comes into Shakti's tent and gives him her opinion of his army [Low numbers and even lower morale] while tending to his wound. She puts the pinch on his shoulder to deaden the pain while she breaks the shaft to remove the tail feathers and pulls the rest of the bolt out the back. Naturally, they bond.)

Shakti: (Xena pulls out the crossbolt)"Uh-h-h!"
Xena-in-Arm:
(Looks at the bolt tip appreciatively before tossing it aside) "Ah, there's not many people who can take a crossbow bolt through the shoulder and still keep their arm."
Shakti: "Your abilities are surprising, Arminestra."
Xena-in-Arm: "Just take it as a thank you for saving my life."
Shakti: "What man of peace wouldn't?"
Xena-in-Arm: "Hmm."
Shakti: "You have ended wars throughout the subcontinent, but I'm afraid, Khindin has no soul and she's already won. I will fight as long as I am able. But I have to think about my people."
Xena-in-Arm: "Shakti, if you surrender, your people will be enslaved and you... "
Shakti: "Oh, I'll be executed; that's a given. But enslaved or not, at least my people will be alive. And as long as they are there must be hope."
Xena-in-Arm:
"No, not with this one. Trust me Shakti. I've known her a very long time."

Now... while Xena has been off galavanting in the future, Gabrielle has been with Naima in their "present". Naima is a darshim, an enlightened one, and she tells Gabrielle she had to send Xena to her future life because a great evil was there and threatening her soul. Evidently this evil could break Xena's karmic circle and prevent Xena from going on to any future lives, preventing all the good Xena is capable of. Naima is forlorn because she wasn't able to warn Xena of the danger before she sent her "ahead". Gabby argues forcefully for Naima to send her to Xena's future, arguing successfully for Naima to "see" how important each woman is to the other in their current and future lives. Naima agrees, noting not just future lives, but past lives as well.

Naima explains that for the women to beat the evil one, they must bring the evil back with them, and to do that Gabrielle learns the way of the Mehndi. Naima leaves the special paints hidden in the wall of the chapel they're currently hiding in, and just as the bad guys break down the door to their room, she sends Gabrielle to her future.

Which begins one of the funniest scenes of this ep, since in their future, our women still see themselves as Gabrielle and Xena. They only see their current bodies when looking into a mirror.

When Gabrielle arrives in the future, we see the male leader, Shakti, reclining on his chair, with only a bandage covering the hole in his left shoulder. Suddenly he looks down at his bare chest, jumps and grabs up his vest/shirt to cover himself. Xena/Arminstra is across the tent talking with one of his men, and notices Shakti's strange behaviour.

Xena-in-Arm: "Something wrong?"
Shakti: "No. No, I'm fine. I was just thinking of someone I need to find. What what were we talking about?"
Xena-in-Arm: "I was saying that Khindin's not afraid of your army. She lives off the fear of others. She's more than just a warrior."
Shakti:
"A warrior-- Khindin?"
Xena-in-Arm: "I know this doesn't make much sense to you but she's trying to recreate powers she lost long ago."
Shakti: (stands up to turn his back as he pulls the vest/shirt on and wraps it around him) "Is she still tall, black hair, a particular warcry when she attacks?"
Xena-in-Arm: (Suspicious, she instructs the man with her) "Leave us." (Xena walks up to Shakti and turns him to look at her, as they touch Shakti morphs into someone we've all come to love and Xena whispers) "Gabrielle."
Gabrielle-as-Shakti: "Xena? Is that really you? Naima didn't tell me that you'd, you'd look so different."
Xena-in-Arm: (smiles as she moves so Gabrielle can look into a nearby mirror) "So do you. Your name is Shakti. You're the leader in this land."
Gabrielle-in-Shakti: "This is my karma. This is my reincarnated soul? (turns back to Xena) Naima sent you here. You have to defend your soul against a great evil. I don't know what that is."
Xena-in-Arm: "Alti-- the great evil is Alti."
Gabrielle-in-Sha:
"I thought you killed Alti."
Xena-in-Arm: "Her evil just moved on to its next life. And this time, it not only has her spirit, but the strength of a warrior. That's why the mother of peace had no success with Khindin."
Gabrielle-in-Shakti: "The mother of peace?"
Xena-in-Arm: (chagrined) "Me. First things first. We'll have to set free the people that Khindin captured."

Well, that's the set up. All they have to do is free the local villagers, find the mehndi paints, decorate themselves the way Naima taught Gabrielle, capture Alti, bring her back from the future so they can kill her yet again.

Thats all.

I loved the conversation between Gabrielle and Xena before their future selves attack Alti's forces.

Gabrielle-in-Shakti: "You know? If this doesn't work, it all ends here, everything, us, our souls... "
Xena-in-Arm: "We don't have any choice. It's funny, here, you're the warrior, the hero."
Gabrielle-in-Shakti :
"Xena, in this lifetime, the mother of peace would be a goddess to me. That's a hero."

And speaking of Devi, remember what wiki claims... it also meant "Goddess".. and is synonymous with "Shakti", the female half of the divine." Which makes the name for Gabrielle's future male life all the more interesting to me... "Shakti".

The DVD interviews have the director discuss the amount of violence in this ep (which he blames on that man married to Lucy... old blood and guts Tapert himself) and the amount of sensuality in this ep, which he blames on no one, so I assume that was his idea.

The two are captured by Alti and thrown in her prison to await crucifixion. While "waiting" they paint each other with the Mehndi, which is definately the sensual part of the ep.

Once Alti returns, the two combine to create the forces we've only seen Naima use, it hits Alti and sends her back just as it reverberates on them, pulling them back... which is a VERY good thing for Naima since we've seen her fate intercut with these three. Her husband's funeral bearers have just tossed her onto the burning funeral bier... and we see her, Xena, and Gabby all jump out of that same bier to the surprise of the funeral attendents.

I have to say, the final fight was one of the best Xena:WP has ever done. Alti is back and has recovered her old spiritual powers, making Xena relive old battles and making Gabrielle live future ones. Remember that Alti is 6'1" and so she really can pick up 5'4" Gabrielle by the hair as she's forcing her to experience the crucifixion. The blood gushing from her hands and feet were even more painful to watch than when we saw Xena experience it in "Advent In Sin trades II".

Loved it when Xena, on the ground with "broken legs", cries out "YOU BITCH!" and uses her Chakram to cut through Gabby's hair, breaking her connection with Alti. Poor Xena, she nearly gets decapitated by her OWN chakram when it comes flying back at her, because of Alti!

Loved it even more when Naima and the two friends used the power of the Mehndi to defeat Alti... those supernatural chakrams were FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!

And loved the fact that Namia confirmed for the two friends what Xena had always promised... they would be together throughout all time. One way, or the other.

I've loved you before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ha824Z6NSpI"

Of course, if Gabrielle's original plan to travel to India included the hope that she's leave the crucifixion vision/risk behind, she failed completely. She's not only seen/experienced it for herself... but she's now got the short hair the vision claimed she'd have.

Gabrielle: (Walks up to Xena, with her hair a little more "styled" than the simple Chakram cut) "I guess it's a day for changes."
Xena: (grins as she runs her hand through Gabby's short hair) "Oh,yeah. How does this feel?"
Gabrielle: "Feels pretty good. I wish I had some word in it, though. You know? It was like this in that vision."
Xena: "I know. I've been thinking about that."

So, we are firmly on the way to the end of the fourth season, and we're rushing towards that vision ever more quickly.

Evidently there was controversy when this ep was aired over its depiction of Hindu dieties, specifically Krishna. They go into this controversy in the interviews on the DVDs, so feel free to check it out.

As for the ep itself... this is from Whoosh.org:

TRANSCRIPTION OF SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
THE WAY was pulled from circulation for a few months after criticism about how Krishna was portrayed in the show. THE WAY returned to circulation on 08/30/99 in a revised edition and was appended by the following announcement from Lucy Lawless, Sunil Aghi, and Renee O'Connor.
Lawless: In today's episode Xena prayed to Krishna the supreme godhead of Hinduism. We hope that we have portrayed it in a revered and respectful way.
Aghu: My name is Sunil Aghi. I am the community activist and president of the Hindu American political foundation.
O'Connor: More than a billion people throughout the world practice the Hindu religion.
Aghi: An accurate portrayal of our deity is important to us, but an even more important goal is to enlighten people of other faith about Hinduism.
O'Connor: With understanding comes tolerance.
Lawless: If you would like to learn more about this great religion please visit your local library or Internet web.

More interesting was how "lesbianism" was folded into this controversy, and for more on that I again refer you to the discussion at whoosh.org

If you too are offended by the characterization done by this show, I'll see you when we next do "The Play's the Thing".

The other controversy with this ep was its graphic violence. Canada supposedly had trouble with someone's arms being cut off. I wonder why they didn't have trouble with someone's head being cut off... but yet again, I digress.

And the ep begins quietly enough, after "last week's" trial with "Alti" and the discovery of our friend's future lives as a warrior and the mother of peace.

Gabrielle's Voice: "I love rivers."
Xena's Voice: "They're all right, if you don't have to get to the other side."
Gabrielle's Voice: "There's a certain inevitability to a river. Nothing stops it from finding its way."
Xena's Voice: "You ever hear of a dam? Beavers?"
Gabrielle's Voice: (Trust me, you can hear the smile in her voice) "Why do you do that?"
Xena's Voice: "What?"
Gabrielle's Voice: "You shoot me down while I'm doing my philosophical stuff."
Xena: "Whaddya mean?"
Gabrielle: (more seriously) "Xena since I met you, I've been on this spiritual quest. I've been looking for the meaning to it all. Why don't you ever ask those questions?"
Xena: (Just as serious, as she twirls her own staff/walking stick) "As a matter of fact, I've been thinking a lot about reincarnation since we came to India."
Gabrielle: "You see? Maybe being a warrior isn't the right karma for you. Maybe you should look to peace."
Xena: "Hmm-- maybe violence isn't the answer to anything. (Suddenly she stabs her staff into the river they are walking along, and spears what appears to be an eel. She throws it up on the riverbank, and it turns into a demon with a frightful mask. She's skewered him to the bank with the staff) Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h! Why are you following us?"

Seems a bad guy... Indrajid, doesn't want them getting to the avatar and so this demon and several of his best buds are to stop them. A fight ensues, and XENA of all people LOSES FOCUS! She turns to see a demon come up behind Ganrielle, but Gabby handles him easily. Unfortunately when Xena was distracted her own enemy got a blade on her, opening up her shoulder, which definately got her attention.

Later by the trademarked campfire, after the fight, Gabrielle is tending to the wound and Xena opens up about her crisis of faith.

Xena's Voice: "We've gotta beat Indrujid to this avatar, whatever that is."
Gabrielle: "An avatar is a deity in human form. They're usually destined to save humanity from a great evil. What's the matter?"
Xena: "It's this wound. That demon should never have gotten a blade on me."
Gabrielle: "Xena, you're only human. Everybody loses focus sometimes."
Xena: "It's not just that I lost focus. It's why. A few days ago, I saw my future life. You saw it, too. I'm destined to be reborn as some kind of a saint."
Gabrielle: "But that's wonderful, isn't it?"
Xena: "Yes, but if I already earned that karma can I still mess it up? Maybe I was shown my future life for a reason. Maybe I'm supposed to change the way that I'm living this life, here and now. But, either way, a warrior cannot ask these questions in the heat of battle. When the kill is there, you have to take it. If I can't do that, I can't be a warrior, anymore."

Teaser ends.

The 2 friends go off to find the avatar, and to their surprise, its someone they know... "Eli". Unfortunately, Eli doesn't seem to want to know them, and he flees from their approach. He's aware that Indrujid is searching for him, and he doesn't want them around fighting to protect him.

Actually, pretty selfless, if you ask me.

But the girls will have none of it, and they insist on walking him to the port city where they'll all catch the first ship home.

Their first night together is notable for two things... the first is my smile that the bedroll politics seem to have changed since season 3's "Forgiven". Gabrielle isn't sleeping next to Xena, but next to Eli. The second, is that Xena maybe able to sense the nonhuman entity tracking them all day, but she's not always too keen on separating the good guys from the bad ones. Thank the gods the one that put her into an arm lock was one of the good guys!

(Hanuman the monkey diety comes up to eyeball the sleeping Eli., Eli wakes up just as Xena comes to the rescue)
Xena: "Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h!" (tries to fight Hanuman, but to no avail as he picks her up in a "bear" hug)
Hanuman: "Please don't hurt me. I meant no harm." (Proving immortals have a sense of humor)
Xena: "Put me down." (Xena, on the other hand...)
Hanuman: "Of course." (And so he does)

We learn the Hanuman's last charge was the avatar Rama, and he helped him defeat Indrujid's father. At his urging, they bring Eli to the great temple to ask Krishna for help. On the way Xena has a heart to heart with Hanuman, and Gabrielle with Eli about his newly discovered "truth".

Gabrielle: "What is the truth?"
Eli: "So, you really wanna know?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah."
Eli: "It's life, that we must revere it, wherever we find it to bring peace to this world. I have to teach mankind a reverence for life."
Gabrielle: "So if someone were to walk up to you and knock you down... "
Eli: "... then I'd get up."
Gabrielle: "But if they knocked you down again. "
Eli: "Then I'd get up again, if I could. But under no circumstances would I fight back. If I did I would simply be perpetuating the cycle of violence that has ravaged the Earth for centuries. That cycle has to be broken, Gabrielle. And the truth is that that can only be done through nonviolence."
Gabrielle: "So, that's the truth." (Says the lady carrying a fighting staff)

High above in the tree tops sit Hanuman and Xena, looking for Indrujid's henchmen, and Xena turns philosophical.

Xena: "Hanuman, you've been walking the Earth for centuries, now. How do you know what is the right code, or-or lifestyle, or... ?"
Hanuman: "... way."
Xena: "Yes, how do you know what's the right way for you?"
Hanuman: "My way is the way of obedience and loyalty. I can see it's not your way. You're too proud."
Xena: "What happens when a person gets stuck between two ways?"
Hanuman: "That is not good. For each person there can only be one way."

The quartet finally reach the temple, and Xena ushers her companions inside as she tries to shoe away the villagers gathering about the temple, before Indrujid arrives.

Gabrielle: "The statue with the flute, is that Krishna?"
Hanuman: "Yes, though he can appear in whatever shape he chooses. He's the ultimate manifestation of the supreme deity."
Gabrielle: "Hanuman, no offense. You see, Xena and I aren't used to waiting around for the gods to bail us out."
Hanuman: (Kneeling in prayer) "Eli's words have troubled you, haven't they, Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "How did you know what he said to me?"
Hanuman: "I have been following him for weeks. I know his words touch anyone with an open heart."
Gabrielle: "So, what do you think of his message."
Hanuman: "His way is the ultimate way. Few can follow it. Those that do truly walk with the spirit."

Suddenly Eli senses Xena is in trouble, and the three go running outside to save her. Unfortunately, while outside they are vulnerable to Indrujid who swoops down upon Eli and gathers him into his flying carpet prison. For some reason, he does the same with Gabrielle, and flies off to the Demon land leaving Xena in his dust.

Needless to say, Xena is NOT pleased. Nor does she like to hear Hanuman's estimation of their odds in the Demon land without some serious backup.

Xena: "Well, your friend Krishna didn't show."
Hanuman: "We need to get his attention."
Xena: "And how do we do that?"
Hanuman: "With these gods sometimes you've got to try something unusual."
Xena: "Like what?!"
Hanuman: "I pray to him all the time. What Krishna needs is for someone to call upon him who doesn't respect gods, doesn't trust them, doesn't like them, someone who thinks she doesn't need them."
Xena: "You want me to pray."

And as Xena gets ready to pray, Gabrielle is trying to break out of their new prison.

Eli: "Be patient. We'll be all right."
Gabrielle: "I don't think that's very realistic. This is an evil man!"
Eli: "He's not a man at all, Gabrielle. He's the incarnation of evil itself."
Gabrielle: "Is that supposed to make me feel better?"
Eli:
"He and I may be here in mortal bodies, but our war is a spiritual one. I'm sure that if I can stay faithful to my way, I can defeat him. His is the way of evil. Mine is the way of..."
Gabrielle: (Throws her hands in the air) " love! I know that. I know that."

And then we intercut between Xena kneeling in prayer at Krishna's altar, and Gabrielle sitting in prayer across from Eli, her staff separating them. Soon Indrujid comes to taunt Eli, as Gabrielle keeps herself quiet and prayerful. Xena for her part is distracted by a sound she thinks is Hanuman behind her... until she realizes its not and stands up to draw her sword on...

...Krishna!

Krishna: "You must open up your heart to me if you're going to tap into the strength that will allow you to defeat Indrujid."
Xena: "I thought that's what the prayers were for."
Krishna: "That got my attention. Now you have to go one step further. You have to embrace the way."
Xena:
"The way? I've heard about the way in Greece, Ch'in, Anatoli, and now India. I don't get it. The way is not for people like me."
Krishna: "You're wrong. You're very close to the way now. However, missing it by the width of a hair-- is the same as missing it by the height of a mountain."
Xena:
"I'm close? I don't think so. I don't have the patience of Gabrielle, the love of Eli, or the serenity of my mentor, Lao Ma. I'm just an angry, ass-kicking.. "
Krishna: "... warrior."

[I love this description of missing "the way" and will come back to it in a future ep]

Xena: "Yes, a warrior."
Krishna: "You say that with disgust."
Xena: "Well, it doesn't rank up there with the saints, does it?"
Krishna"Xena you have seen what you're destined to be. In your next life, you will walk the way of the saint. However you will never achieve that life if you don't follow
the way you're on now."
Xena: "The way of the warrior?"
Krishna: "Yes you must not be hesitant to fight in a just cause. It is better to die following your own way, than to live following someone else's. When you ride into combat act without attachment and carry with you the confidence that you
are fulfilling your calling in this life. Then you will know the way."
Xena: "I understand."
Krishna: "Then go. Rise up like fire and burn all that oppose you. And if you're following the path of the way call my name and the strength to defeat Indrujid will be given to you. Are you ready?"
Xena: "I'm ready." (Krishna disappears and Hanuman appears)
Hanuman: "I'm ready, too.

Meanwhile, back in demon land, after threatening to torture Gabrielle before Eli to get him to join forces with the evil one, Indrujid decides to play with Gabrielle's mind. He presents her with an illusion of a bound and beaten Xena, calling to her for help. Gabrielle, against Eli's urging, drops her praying and picks up her staff to charge the demons menancing Xena. As she comes closer, she is ensnared by Indrujid who drops his false persona and taunts Eli with the weakness of his only disciple. He then proceeds to choke the life out of Gabrielle as Eli stands by.

A high pitched noise greets our ears and we see Indujid's hand neatly sliced off his arm by a chakram, and we see OUR Xena has arrived.

And then a fight ensues like none we've ever seen... (seems like I've said that a lot in the last 3 eps.) Indujid, like a starfish, answers the loss of one hand by growing 4 more arms, each wielding a weapon.

Gabrielle and Eli stand to the side as Xena tackles the 6 armed Prince of Darkness, the King of Demons. Unfortunately, she is NOT up to the task, as Indrujid nails her left hand to the wall with a dagger, and then slices off both her left arm and then her right. She falls to the ground, stunned and helpless, about to die from one last blow when Gabrielle breaks from Eli's side and uses her staff to attack Indrujid.

He is amused.

He takes the staff from her, and lights both ends on fire before turning them onto his attacker. Unfortunately for him, Gabrielle's distraction was just what Xena needed, as she lay on the floor and called upon Krishna to help her.

It was quite the transformation, to see Xena rise from the floor, dressed as one of the Indian goddesses from the walls behind her. She had 4 arms, her left hand still sporting the knife impaling it, and her face was covered in a black mask with a gold nose chain from her right nostril to her right (?) ear. She taunted Indrujid into the shadows with the sound of steel scraping on the walls, and a cat and mouse game ensued, with her using that knife stuck into her hand as a weapon, along with her axes.

Eventually she succeeds in killing him, separating his head from his neck as well as any gladiator would do in the coliseum. And once he died... Xena... OUR Xena returned whole and with only two arms and no mask. She turned away from Indrujid's throne and walked away, with Gabrielle running to meet her.

Later, we see Eli walking down a dirt road, with many villagers and Gabrielle following behind.

Gabrielle: (Contrite) "Eli? I failed my first test."
Eli: "It's hard, the way of love. It may not be right for you. But if you choose to follow it you must do so with all your heart. You'll fail more than once. But don't give up hope. In the end you'll redeem the world."
Gabrielle: "Where are you going?"
Eli: "Home. I need to take the message to my own people. I believe they'll be the most receptive. Thank you, Gabrielle. You were the first one to understand me. I won't forget you."

And off he goes.

Gabrielle looks at her staff, and at the nearby river. She walks down to the riverbank and heaves the staff as far as she can into the river. Gabrielle looks very satisfied, which is more than can be said for Xena, who is watching from upstream.

Xena: "So, it's the way of love for you, huh?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah. Yours is the way of the warrior. I think I've always known that."
Xena: "And I've always known that it was wrong for you. I'm sorry I took you so far from your truth."
Gabrielle: "Don't be sorry. Xena, do you think I could have understoodthe power of selfless love if it weren't for our friendship?"
Xena: "Still, I think maybe you should travel with Eli for a while."
Gabrielle: "No. You and I stay together."
Xena: "Gabrielle, we're headed in opposite directions in life."
Gabrielle: "All rivers run to the sea. We'll end up in the same place; I'm sure of it." (Pause.....) "Thank you."
Xena: "For what?" (Placing her left hand on Gabrielle's shoulder)
Gabrielle: "For not mentioning dams."
Xena:
(smiles) "You're welcome."

Episode 85 season 4 # 16 "The Play's the Thing"

Unfortunately, its not my thing.

It seems the woman who's been detailing Xena's exploits for the last 4 years is a really crappy writer who's prose can't even capture the imagination of yesteryear, so what makes us think her version of Xena's legacy would inspire audiences when her scrolls are rediscovered 2 millenia later?

Oh... don't get me started.

In "Vanishing Act", I realized it was a halfway decent ep, if you stopped watching in act 1 when the girls stopped wearing their traditional outfits, and restarted in act 4 when they got back INTO their traditional outfits.

It wasn't so easy this time.

This time, I'd say, stop at 2min 20sec in the teaser, and pick up at 36min 30 sec late act 4.

[TEASER]

Our two women are in the middle of a field of tall wildflowers, striking poses we last saw in "Between the Lines", and Gabby looks like she's wearing the floral wreath from "Crusader" in her hair.
Gabrielle and Xena: [Hum]
Gabrielle: "It's no use. I can't get it out of my mind, even with
yoga."
Xena: "Well, ya can't say thatcha didn't try. And ya can't say that I didn't try."
Gabrielle: "I appreciate that. But, Xena-- it was one of my favorite
scrolla new one charting our history through the prism of time it was "
Gabrielle and Xena: " a more intimate... "
Xena: " examination of our relationship and on and on. You've been talking about it ever since we left Paraeus."
Gabrielle: "I can't recreate the beauty-- the essence.
Xena: "Then, Gabrielle, go back for it."
Gabrielle: "Hmm?"
Xena: "Gabrielle, the prince needs my help in Arcon. I'm gonna go ahead. You go back to Paraeus and catch up with me when you can."
Gabrielle: "Are you sure?"
Xena: "Sure, I'm sure. Go on, make us both happy."
Gabrielle: "Thank you."
Xena: "Don't mention it."
Gabrielle: "OK." (and she turns on a dime and walks away quickly, without a backward glance)
Xena: (To no-one in particular as she stands alone in the field) "Well, when I say, `Don't mention it,' I mean you can mention it. It's just a figure of speech. You don't have to take it literally. (She starts to walk bak towards Argo) It wouldn't kill ya to maybe to look back or something. (She looks back towards Gabrielle's direction, to confirm her suspicion) Aw, rats. All right, Argo, it's just you and me." (Argo seems nonplussed by the whole affair)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Paraeus: a theater town.

Tavernkeeper: "Welcome! Welcome!"
Sophocles's Voice: (with 4 starlets on his arm)"-- it was her underwear!"
Female starlet's Voice: "You're much funnier than Euripides!"
Sophocles: "I am! [Laughs until he sees Gabrielle. He extends an empty arm towards her with a come hither look] Oh! Hu-uh?"
Gabrielle: "Not in your lifetime. Thank you."
Sophocles: [Sighs and walks away in a huff]
Gabrielle [Sighs]: "We came through here."
Sophocles: "She'll never work in this town again."
Gabrielle: "We walked this way. We said hi to the tavernkeeper. We
almost-- " (and she's nearly run over by someone falling off a nearby porch)
Joxer: "Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h! Ooh!"
Gabrielle: "Joxer."
Joxer: [Moans]
Tavernkeeper's Voice: "Lousy drunk!"
Joxer: "I'm not drunk! I just _trip_ over things like that!"
Tavernkeeper: "Ah-h!"
Gabrielle: "Joxer, what are you doing?"
Joxer: (He stands and turns to see the "new" Gabrielle, short haired and dressed in her 2 piece gold outfit.) "Hi. Gabrielle-- wow! Uh, your hair. (Points to the henna decorations on her chest) Did that hurt? Uh, what's that you're wearing?"
Gabrielle: "Sari."
Joxer: "Don't apologize. It looks good."

Ok.

The rest is really irritating to me for a variety of reasons.

Yes there were a couple of jokes here and there, but this homage to "the producers" was more than I could take, since it ran roughshod over my dear bard's skills as a writer, as a problem solver. It basically made her look self centered and I never got that impression in the last 4 years that her ego was bigger than the subcontinent of India.

I did like the fight at the end, when Xena showed up DURING the first performance of the play.

Cle: "No one takes my money and gets away with it! You're
coming with me!"

Gabrielle: (Expecting the actor playing the villian, instead sees a real villian, a warlord named cleon who hates Xena, and who wants his investment back one way or the other)"Humungus-- Cleon-- "
Cleon:
"That's right-- Cleon. If I can't get the secrets of defeating Xena-- at least I'll get her little friend. (He doesn't see the REAL Xena walk out from the wings and come up to tap him on the left shoulder, as he turns left Xena swings to his right and inserts herself between Gabby and Cleon. He sees her as he turns back) Huh?"
Gabrielle: "Xena."
Cleon:
(Mistakes our WP for the ineffectual actress playing her part in the production)"Oh, go away. You're not even a good actress."
Xena: " Now, that was a little uncalled for. She-yah!"

Well, she whips Cleon's backside, and Minya along with the faux Xena clobbers another warlord, teh conmen try to get away and Gabrielle has the audience stop them, pretending its "interactive theater"... yadda yadda yadda.

Gabrielle: "Ah, it was stupid. To think that people would want to
hear about peace and love instead of sex and violence."
Xena: "Well, peace might be boring, but it's all anybody really
wants."
Gabrielle: "Yeah no one wants to be preached to. They have to
experience things for themselves. Still, if I could have touched
one person... "
Minya: "Gabrielle, I wanted to thank you! I never would have met Pollener [sic] if it wasn't for you! In fact, the two of you made me realize something deep down about myself that I guess I always knew, but just didn't dare admit. Yes I'm a... thespian."
Xena:
"Oh. Hah. Congratulations. You managed to touch someone."
Gabrielle: "That's not exactly what I had in mind. I wanted to change violent people into people of peace, not actors. That is what she said, right? Deep down, she's a thespian? Yeah, um-- that's what she-- said. Yeah."
Xena: "Why? What'd you think?"
Gabrielle: "Thespian-- "

Poor Joxer, I forgot to mention, he's still hanging upside down in the theater's ropes...

Jox: "Hello?! You guys?! Hey! I'm the producer! Anybody?! Hello?! I'm gonna tell my brother! Mommy?!"

I didn't notice, but evidently when he says "I'm going to tell my brother", Sam Raimi's credits as Xena Producer (the actor's real brother) come scrolling by.

Who knows, perhaps I don't like it because its an indictment upon society's preoccupation with sex and violence, and that in order to get someone's attention, you have to either put them in a hottub

Episode 86(?) season 4 # 18 "The Convert"

Again, I'm sorry to report the dvd interviews haven't found their way yet to youtube. Bummer.

Najara, like Callisto, was an excellent villian for the women to work against. Excellent in that she was totally different from Callisto, from Alti, but no less vile. I enjoyed the Q&A at Sat 5's suggested web site with RJ Stewart, the originator of Najara (though not the writer of THIS ep) Someone asked if Najara was "evil" and he said YES!

I agree.

Of course, there's a different evil that begins THIS ep, a warlord/barbarian called Cryton the terrible. He's just slaughtered a temple full of priests, acolytes, worshippers, and kidnapped the female novitiates (newbies). The opening teaser is heartbreaking, as Joxer and Gabrielle run into the temple after Xena has cleared out the bad guys... they're "running" in but the film is in slo-mo and we see the HORROR on their faces as the turn around to take in the extent of death surrounding them.

One young man is kneeling, and thunderstruck by the blade he's been impaled with, but still can stammer out a final plea to Gabrielle to save the novitiates. Joxer pulls the deadly clawed knife from the young man's midriff as he dies. A timely scream directs our trio to the right direction, and we see Cryton beating a woman senseless as the white clad novitiates stand around impotent.

Enter XENA, and a real fight begins. Even Gabrielle, peace-nik that she is, finds herself in the middle of the fray, blowing a drugged powder into the faces of the bad guys, "befuddling" them.

The most shocking thing, however, is Joxer. He's trying to help someone on the ground when Cryton comes up to kill him. Joxer stands and turns to Cryton, still holding the knife he pulled from that man's body in the temple... and Cryton drives himself unwittingly upon it, dying quickly.

The second most surprising thing in the teaser, was the identity of the woman Cryton was beating when they arrived. It was Najara. She was trying to protect the novitiates, but WASN'T fighting back, wasn't trying to defend herself.

I got to tell you, this was a great companion piece to Najara's first appearance.

It seems that after Xena and Gabrielle had her arrested/sent to prison the Jinn stopped talking to the Crusader. While in prison, she met a man who had just returned from India, who spoke of breaking the "cycle of violence" and she vowed never to pick up the sword again. (That's when the jinn started speaking to her again.)

Can everyone guess who that man was???

Najara tries to seriously bond with Gabrielle over this epiphany, drawing parallels between the two women and distinctions between them and that violence monger, Xena.

She's a "changed" woman, or so it seems.

Gabrielle: "And what have you been doing?" (Since her escape from prison)
Najara: "Planting crops, helping harvest, mending clothes, working towards the day the jinn said would come, the day you and I would meet again united in a common bond not even Xena shares."
Gabrielle: "The jinn said that?"
Najara: "We walk the same path, Gabrielle. Our lives are dedicated to defeating evil by promoting peace. It's our way the way Eli taught us [Whispers] a reverence for life. [Normal Voice] Stray from that path whatever the reason the consequences could be devastating for everyone."

Gabrielle is quite taken by this second "evil" woman she's met who's apparently reformed herself, this time not with the intervention of Hercules but of Eli.

During "The Way" I mentioned the "bed roll politics" had switched, with Gabby sleeping next to Eli, not Xena. (To be fair, Xena was on patrol). In this ep, things are definately back to "normal" and yet "not". In the past, when Joxer has been with them, HE'S usually sleeping next to them by the campfire. This time Joxer and Najara are in one small cleared area... NO fire to be seen, and Xena & Gabby are through the bushes next to the campfire. I realize they separated them as a plot device for later in the ep... but it was striking.

ANYway...on their first night together, Gabrielle is tying Najara up so she won't escape. I think Gabrielle is just as creeped out by Najara's spiel as I am...

Gabrielle: "I'm sorry I have to do this. I'll try not to hurt you. Is that too tight? Can you still sleep?"
Najara: "Like a baby. It's OK really. Xena's just being true to her way. But if she thinks I'm going anywhere now that I've found you and our path, she's crazy. Good night, Gabrielle."

Yuck.

The next day, Gabrielle is tending to Najara's wounds and Najara is not only being remorseful over her evil past, but is speaking of her possible future.

Najara: "They (the Jinn) also talk about that hospice we were gonna start. Remember?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah, I remember, a place whose only purpose is to ease suffering. It was a good idea."
Najara: "It still is."
Gabrielle: "Najara, I think what you're doing is wonderful giving up fighting, working through peace and starting a hospice would be good for you. But it's not for me. My place is with Xena." (What a slap in Najara's face!)
Najara: "I know and it always will be until her continuing violence finally makes her do something even you can't excuse."
Gabrielle: "That's not going to happen."
Najara: "It has to. And then you will have to choose, not between me and Xena but between Xena and your own soul."

The surprising thing about Najara, in this ep, was that she never told Gabrielle about Xena's death vision. I expected it in this latest scene, but she refrained. Did she think Xena already spilled the beans, and so the reveal wouldn't be as momentous, or did she really not want to say anything that would "hurt" Gabrielle?

Yeah, the former.

I really loved the parallel storylines in this ep. Gabrielle falling for Najara's conversion was easy to see. Xena changed, so why not Najara? Xena, however, is under NO such illusions.

Najara: "You're awfully quiet, Xena. But then, you never were one to waste words."
Xena: "Nothing's changed."
Najara: "Including me is that it? You're wrong."
Xena: "New outfit new religion same old wacko underneath."
Najara: "Yet you claim to have changed. Why can't I? After all, we both had the same inspiration Gabrielle."
Xena: "Shees."
Najara: "But unlike you, I've changed my whole life for her. You've just changed sides."
Xena: "You hurt Gabrielle, and I will change you in ways that are anything but peaceful."

I really like the conversations, however, between Gabrielle and Xena over not just Najara's conversion, but what it portends for how Gabby views Xena.

That first night with Najara tied up in the "next clearing over"... as Xena lays down to sleep, Gabrielle reveals Eli was the catalyst for Najara's conversion... but instead of responding to her questions, the Warrior Princess "pretends" to be asleep! What is she afraid of? We find out the very next night as Gabrielle and Xena prepare to eat supper.

Gabrielle: "I've been thinking. I know there's no excuse for what Najara did."
Xena: "Sure, there is. She's a nut."
Gabrielle: "That was before she met Eli. He showed her the truth. Now, all she wants to do is heal people, help them, you know? Give them hope."
Xena: (Incredulous) "Are you saying that we shouldn't take Najara back to prison?"
Gabrielle: "I just don't see the point if she's already reformed. Isn't it better to have peaceful people around who do good rather than people who fight?"
Xena:
(Defensively!) "Like me."
Gabrielle:
(Ducks her head, this isn't going well) "No, I'm not saying that. Xena, you're trying to find your true way, your path. Well, so is Najara."
Xena: "Najara doesn't have a path. She follows whatever path her voices tell her to. You don't believe me? Test her. Say no to her. She'll blow up in your face."
Gabrielle: "You have hardly spoken to her!"
Xena: [Interrupts, arm waving Gabrielle to stop] "Say no! I don't have to! I'm sure that she says all the right things. I'm sure she even believes them. But she's a fanatic, Gabrielle. Don't trust her."

And on their final morning together, as they break camp.

Gabrielle: "Najara was only trying to help."
Xena: "Yeah, I heard."
Gabrielle: "Will you try to understand? You went to prison after you were changed. You know what a waste that is."
Xena: "That's what I'm trying to tell you. Najara hasn't changed."
Gabrielle: "And how do you know that?"
Xena: "Because I know her. She's the same zealot she always was only now she's even more dangerous."
Gabrielle: (Skeptical!) "How is that?"
Xena:
"'Cause she's won you over." (Oh... THAT hurt!)

The other thread running through this ep was Joxer's. The poor man killed someone, and despite him being an evil warlord who just slaughtered a bunch of religious types, and was about to kill more... he's broken up about it. He and Xena bond over it, and he decided to go to a nearby town and tell Cryton's son about it personally, as a way of atonement.

(I never understood how THAT was going to help, but I digress yet again)

The son is a nearly grown young man, and he's under the mistaken belief that his Father was an honourable man, "Cryton the Courageous" and he's devastated to learn (from Xena) that he's dead. He plans to leave school and find the scoundrel who killed dear old Papa, and put him to death. ("My name is Inigo Montoya, You killed my Father, prepare to die"). Xena convinces the really buff young scholar to travel with them, and he bonds with Joxer. Joxer refuses to tell the young man his father was a piece of filth... "I already killed him once" he tells the girls, and he won't deprive the young man of his hero worship. Najara, witch that she is, DOES tell Armon who killed dear old Daddy and why... which leads Armon to try and kill Joxer. Xena physically prevents him, and Gabrielle reasons with Armon that the better punishment would be to let Joxer live.

Armon: "I want vengeance!"
Gabrielle: "Well, then take it by letting Joxer go. For him, living with what he has done is a fate worse than death. `Cryton the Courageous' isn't that what you called your father? Be brave, Armon. Let Joxer live."

When challenged by Joxer, this was Najara's excuse.

Joxer: "Why, Najara? Why didja tell him?"
Najara: (Looking at XENA, not Gabrielle) "Because Gabrielle's right and everyone deserves to know the truth about someone they love." (Too bad for Najara, Xena already came clean with Gabby months ago.)

On that last morning together, Armon comes to his senses and arrives to warn his new friends that Cryton's men are coming. He and Joxer save Argo from capture, while Xena takes on the bad guys as pacifists Gabrielle and Najara crouch in the brush. Gabby sees the last warrior get a blade on Xena, opening up the full length of her left thigh, and she goes down on her left knee in OBVIOUS pain. Gabby can stand being a pacifist no longer, and tries to leave the brush to aid her friend...

Gabrielle: "Xena!"
Najara:
Grabs her by the shoulders, to hold her down) "Gabrielle! No!"
Gabrielle: (trying to rise) "No, no! She's hurt!"
Najara: "It's her way! Let her walk it alone."
Gabrielle:
"Get off me!" (But now Najara has her firmly by her short hairdo as Gabby twists in pain)
Najara: [Interrupts] "You have to listen! Don't you hear them? Shh! The jinn. Shh! (To the Jinn) Yes I understand. (To Gabrielle) You heard them!"
Gabrielle:
(Shouts as she continues to try to free herself) "No!"
Najara:
"Don't say that! The jinn get mad when you say that! Tell me you heard them!"

That's when Najara's worst nightmare arrives in the form of a really ticked off Warrior Princess, and the REAL act 4 battle begins.

I bet you can guess who wins.

Our two friends leave a comatose Najara at the prison hospice, her ankles shackled to the bed.

Gabrielle: "Do you think she'll ever wake up?"
Xena: "Who knows? Maybe her voices will call her back home. In the meantime, the sisters will keep her comfortable as long as she lives."
Gabrielle: "I really thought she had changed. You did."
Xena: "So did you....You've changed in ways that have shown me choices I'd never have known without you."
Gabrielle: "Thanks. It's funny, it seems that when push comes to shove, sometimes the only choice is to shove back. But with this path that I'm on, I can't do that."
Xena: "With me around, you won't have to."

"Save you"...

Episode 87 season 4 #19 "Takes One to Know One"

AKA:

"Murder at Cyrene's", starring Xena as Hercule Poirot, and Gabrielle as Major Hastings.

Fun ep, nice breather, nothing of momentous importance except that Gabrielle turned 22 during this ep. How do I know this? Because someone at Whoosh.org counted the number of candles on her birthday cake.

Gabrielle's sister was cute, as was her continued obsession with Joxer, although the first time I saw this I thought she was supposed to be the actress who played Xena in The Play's the Thing", not Lila.

Autolycus wasn't his usual self, and seemed a little heartless when he tried to pin the murder on Cyrene.

I did like how everyone (except Xena) was guilty of something... even Gabrielle.

I also liked the birthday party at the end.

Since there aren't a lot of vids celebrating this ep... here's a fun one called "Princesses On Parade":

Hate, the India arc, hate it, hate it, hate it! We're talking Alien3 hate!

Love The Plays the Thing, had too much of way of peace Gabby (ok to embrace the way of peace when you have the a warrior princess to protect you, what about the rest of us?) Time for some fun! Great premise, great fun, once again with the girls divided one of them teams up with Joxer. Lovely to see Minya again and great the way they use the actor/actresses stunt doubles to play their characters on stage. Lovely lines too, especially like to 'shoe a mule' and 'thespian'. 8/10

The Convert; not so keen on Najara although nice to see Kathryn Morris back. I like the Joxer storyline best in this one but mad at Gabby for not helping him, it's left to Xena and once again we see the very real love between them. I believe this is the only person Joxer kills in all his time in the show although he certainly fights in countless battles and saves many lives including our girls, he is Joxer the Mighty.
7/10

Takes one to know One; nice to see Minya back again, Lilah and of course Autolycus (his last appearance in the show?). But what's with his hair? Equally very much love Discord and she's great here, especially when she threatens a 'mortal shishkebab'. The actual story is quite funny and it's nice to see Autolycus hasn't foresaken his womanising ways-7/10

I liked aspects of the India arc (Gabriell's costume, f'rinstance ) and hated others (Eli, f'rinstance).

I have to say, that Renee O'Connor (If Steven Sears is correct) deserves huge congrats for the decision to cut Gabrielle's hair. He reported on the DVD interview that Renee wanted the character to "mature", and so Tapert emailed the states a pic with Renee in a short wig with the question... "what do you think?" Sears was all for it, they just had to figure out "when" to cut it.

I find it stunning to see "Gabrielle" in long hair... and "2" eps later she looks 4 years older in her short "do".

I don't think "Endgame" or "Ides of March" would have been as powerful with the "younger" Gabrielle.

Naturally, for my fellow Gabrielle-aholics... YMMV ;)

Episode 88 season 4 #20 "Endgame"

Someone is killing Amazons. Queen Ephiny comes upon the body of Solari as she leads a patrol looking for the killers. At her side is annoying teenager who questions her Queen too much, but Ephiny has no problem putting Amarise in her place as she leads her women further into the forest. Soon we see another patrol of Amazons under attack by Roman soldiers, and our Queen arranges her forces for attack telling young Amarise to “stay close”.

Amarise initially seems timid in the face of true battle and hangs back as her Queen charges forward, but she quickly recovers and shows us she’s not timid when taking Roman Soldiers lives, whether with her long sword or her short dagger. She then decides to take on the silver armored Roman commander and holds her own for a minute before his greater skill and strength disarms her and knocks her to the ground. The Commander raises his arms for the final downward killing thrust, but his blade is blocked by…

EPHINY!

The golden haired Queen goes blow for blow against the Armored Roman Commander, but in a cruel twist of fate she too is disarmed as she’s knocked to one knee. She refuses to bow and stares Brutus in the eye as he thrusts his sword into her chest. Defiant to the end, she shows no regret, no pain as she dies at his feet.

MY QUEEN!” shouts the impotent Amarise as she runs to Ephiny’s side. Brutus can see the reinforcements arriving from the Amazon village, and he orders his men to withdraw.

Do you remember the good old days, when Xena PTBs would give us 45 seconds of fun before they hit us with 42 minutes of angst and tragedy

They still do that, they just inserted it AFTER they killed our Queen.

Gabrielle: [Chuckles as she throws her fishing net into the pond]
Xena: "You've gotten really good at that."
Gabrielle: "Well, I've been practicing on rocks long enough. You see, it won't hurt the fish. They're not going to suffer at all."
Xena: "Oh, they told you that?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah, yeah, they did. You wanna see?" (And she tosses the now wet net over her Warrior)
Xena: (Calmly pulls the net off as she stands to face Gabrielle) "You know, Gabrielle there's only one way that you can know how fish really feel and that's to become one with them."
Gabrielle: (Hands up, to warn Xena away) "Don't do it."
Xena: (She’s NOT impressed) "Oh, yeah."
Gabrielle: "Xena, this outfit takes forever to dry."
Xena: (still not impressed as she advances, net in hand) "Oh, well, I've got time. Come on, fishy, fishy.

Suddenly, a new war cry erupts as someone flips into view and blocks Xena’s path.

Amarise[Yells]: "What are you waiting for?! Run! I'll hold her off!"
Xena: (Xena’s face is precious as she cows)"Oh, no. I surrender before Gabrielle." (Gabrielle is having a hard time deciding whether to laugh at Xena or worry about this new Warrior “protecting” her)
Amarise: "Is this a trick, my queen?"
Gabrielle: "No, this is Xena. She's my friend."
Amarise: "Xena-- wow." (Xena straightens up and smiles smugly) "I-I thought you'd be-- taller." (You HAVE to see Xena's face when she says THAT!)
Gabrielle: "Who are you?"
Amarise: (Turns to kneel before Gabrielle with head bowed) "My name is Amarise. I come from the village of your tribe, my queen. You must come with me, quickly."
Gabrielle: "What happened? Why do you keep calling me `Queen'? I'm not queen unless,(understanding dawns on her face as she looks up to Xena) unless Ephiny were"
Amarise: "Ephiny is dead and we need our queen to lead us."

And the teaser ends with Peace-nik Gabrielle looking up aghast at her Warrior Princess.

So the irritating teen who's fav line is, "In MY tribe..." has successfully found the Amazon Queen and brought her home, only to discover that in her absence their village was attacked and many sisters were kidnapped by the Romans to be sold as slaves. Amarise, hot head that she is, has to be reigned in by Xena, as she organizes the remaining Amazons into a credible defense. While doing that, she and Gabrielle make their pilgrimage to the deathbed of Ephiny, and plan their next moves.

Xena: (To Gabrielle at Ephiny's deathbed) "Over the last ten years, I've watched the Amazons go from mighty nation to scattered tribes and I wondered if, what I was seeing was their greatness coming to an end. But Ephiny showed me there was hope."

Xena has already learned, based on the sword hilts left behind by the Roman invaders, that it wasn't Brutus' army that took their friends, it was Pompey's. To find Pompey, however, she must first find Brutus.

After brutally dragging Brutus back to camp, behind Argo... there's a little Glitch in the interrogation scene. Amarise has decided her QUEEN is wrong, and tries to assassinate Brutus.

Did you know Xena is so quick with that damned whip, she can snap an arrow in midflight? :wtf:

Yeah, me neither.

Amarise is thrown in the clink after a stern Gabrielle shoots down her challenger, and Brutus gives up his information after Xena puts the pinch on him. Interestingly, despite Gabrielle JUST having put Amarise in HER place, she has to do it to Xena too as the Warrior Princess tries to walk away from Brutus without taking the pinch off! The Amazon 2nd in command tries to prevent Xena from following Gabrielle's commands, and the Queen's voice overpowers hers too as she exerts her right.

Gabrielle: "Amazon law says that Brutus' punishment is my decision! Take him and hold him."

There's a silly little conversation between Amarise and Brutus as they both sit in the Amazon jail... the best part is when Xena comes in to release Amarise.

Xena: (Opens the door to her jail cell) "You're coming with me."
Amarise: (Kneels before Xena, head bowed, ready for her punishment) "I betrayed my queen. I know the price of that."
Xena: "Yeah, I'm sure they covered that in your tribe. Gabrielle has pardoned you. Let's go." (She turns and leaves a stunned Amarise still kneeling, door to the cell open)
Brutus: (Chuckling as he goads her into movement) "Xena doesn't give many second chances, little girl."

Pompey has the Amazons, and plans to sell them to traders for 500 dinars a piece. He needs the money to buy supplies and pay his men. He send his top Lieutenant off with the prisoners, and instructs him to bring back the money quickly. Unfortunately for them, a certain Warrior Princess stands in the way, with not only a fully armed Amazonian guard, but with enough weapons buried on the trail to equip the prisoners in their care.

Xena has picked the spot for the ambush, but is herself "ambushed" by Amarise's lack of faith.

Amarise [Interrupts]: "I don't get it."
Xena: "What?"
Ama: "You and Gabrielle? Are you really gonna just let her pardon Brutus?"
Xena: "Well, what do you suggest? That we take over the village, chain up Gabrielle, and kill him?"
Amarise: "Pick one. I'll go with it."
Xena: "You know, Gabrielle is not the weakling that you think she is. She's seen more of life and death than you will ever know. This is just one more battle, and she's got her own way of fighting it."
Amarise: "By letting him go? Are you crazy?"
Xena: "Her battle isn't with Brutus. It's with this (lifts her own sword) and with this (pulls Amarise's dagger from her belt) and with war and with hatred. And you know what? Sometimes, I don't like the way she goes about it. But I've come to understand her. Amarise, you're so young, and when you're young, ya think the answers are simple to find. You think you're gonna find them on the point of a sword? Well, you're wrong. (Pushes the dagger back into Amarise's belt) I just pray that you live long enough to lay down your sword and look for those answers in yourself."
Ama:
"Well I still think she's wrong, but if you trust her...Nah sorry, I can't go there. You'll just have to trust her on your own."
Xena: "I hope that you can follow orders."
Amarise: "Not a problem. In my tribe, we would well it's not a problem. I mean I followed Ephiny's orders. I still think I could have done something to save her."
Xena: "You know, Amarise, that wasn't your fault. If it wasn't for women like Ephiny, the Amazon nation would have died out a long time ago. But you and I and Gabrielle-- aren't gonna let that happen."

No, they most certainly will not. The ambush goes well, especially when Carminus falls for Xena's feint, and all the Romans are killed or captured except Carminus, who rides off to warn Pompey of the disaster. Pompey NEEDS the money from those Amazons, and he breaks camp to bring his entire force to bear on Xena and the Amazon tribe.

"Meanwhile, back at" the Queen's hut, Gabrielle is receiving a visitor from her jail. THIS is one of those times when Gabrielle in SHORT hair is ever so much more commanding than the long haired version.

Gabrielle: (To her guards) "Leave us. We want to talk about peace between Xena and Caesar."
Brutus
: "Impossible. Can you blame Caesar for hating Xena? Look at all she's done to him."
Gabrielle [Whispers]:
"What?"
Brutus: "Xena interfered in Caesar's war with Pompey. He would have been out of the picture long ago if it wasn't for her."
Gabrielle: "Xena was trying to stop a war."
Brutus: "And why do ya think there was a war?! Because of Pompey! He opposes everything Caesar wishes for Rome peace, prosperity a return to the republic."
Gabrielle: "We really know different Caesars."
Brutus: "Caesar doesn't care about the Amazons. What happened was an accident. We can make sure it doesn't happen again."
Gabrielle: "I can. As queen of the Amazons, I propose a treaty of peace to Caesar. We're not afraid to fight or to die. Guards!"
Brutus:
"You surprise me. I accept contingent on Caesar's approval, of course and Xena." (He's lead away by the guards)
Gabrielle: "What do you think?" (Asks Gabrielle as Xena walks out from behind a curtained doorway)
Xena: "Well, he's not Caesar, but he may be the chink in Caesar's armor."

Morning dawns, and Pompey's army has arrived from the south. Xena has barricades arranged along their perimeter, and has tied Pompey's men, taken in yesterday's ambush, to the barricades. She's even arranged pits of oil to be readied for lighting when the army charges in to rescue the men.

Gabrielle does NOT approve... but before the two can get into it, word comes that ANOTHER army is advancing from the North. Its a brigade from Caesar's, the one Brutus was to command. Brutus suggests trading himself to Pompey, to save the Amazons, but Xena says she has a better idea and releases him to take command of his own army. As she and the Amazons fight Pompey, he attacks Pompey from the left.

Xena: "Brutus, if I hand you over to Pompey, he's going to kill you."
Brutus: "I'm willing to take that chance and I don't think you have much choice."
Xena: "That's where you're wrong. I do have choices. I've had choices since we first captured you. No, I think I'd rather give you back to Caesar. Cut down the Romans and take them to the rear."
Amarise's Voice: "What about our defense?"
Xena: "If my plan works, we won't need them. And besides (looks at Gabrielle) we don't kill just for the sake of it.."

There's a nice moment, when Xena prevents Amarise in joining the charge on the Romans. Xena HAS to leave Gabrielle to fight Pompey's men, but she can't leave a friend behind who refuses to kill to protect herself.

Xena: "Pull back! Now-w! Amarise I need you to do something for me. I need you to stay here and hold the line."
Amarise: "Right count on it."
Xena: "One more thing, protect Gabrielle."
Amarise:
"Are you kidding me?"
Xena: "You heard me. Do as I say." (Xena leaves to mount Argo)
Amarise: (Standing beside Gabrielle at the front lines, she shouts to her right and left) "Hold! Hold!"
[Xena charges the Romans astride Argo.]
Amarise:
(condenscending) "You better get back to camp. You might get hurt."
Gabrielle: (Too cool for school as she walks away from Amarise and along the front lines) "You don't know me very well. Hold your positions! We have to wait and give Xena more time! Hold the line. (Then she releases her troops with a mightly cry) For Ephiny! Ephiny-y-y-y-y-!"
Amarise:
"Go! Go! Go!"
Gabrielle: (walking back down the line, towards Amarise, exhorting her women into battle) "Ephiny-y-y-y-y!"
Amarise:
(suddenly sees danger in the form of a javelin thrown at her Queen) "Duck!"
Gabrielle:
(turns to the woman who's just put her face down in the dirt, and covered her body with her own to protect her) "Thanks."

Xena wins... did you have any doubt?

Pompey did, as he successfully talked her out of killing him, when he was kneeling in front of her, at her mercy.

Pompey: "Wait! If you kill me Caesar gains control. You know it and I know it. That's the balance I give you, Xena. It's always been like that. And you may hate us both but without one you can't control the other. Now, if you let me live well, we can't destroy the world if we're trying to destroy each other now, can we? Hmm?" (She drops her sword and turns away. Pompey can't see he's won, and he wants MORE, so he rises and pulls a dagger from his belt, with intent to stab her in the back) "Ah-h-h-h!"

Xena twirls around, and although we don't see it, we hear what happens next.. "SLICE!" "THUNK!"

Xena: (to the dead man at her feet) "It's not about balance, anymore."

I have to say, this ep was another winner in just watching Xena's expressions listening to the inflection in her voice. It culminated in this exchange with Brutus on the battlefield, after Pompey's army was defeated.

Brutus: "Well-- your plan worked."
Xena: "If you wanna stay alive, don't mention my name to Caesar. The plan was yours."
Brutus: "Xena your vision of Caesar is blinded by hatred. He is the only hope to restore the democracy of the republic."
Xena: "And a man like you would do well in his democracy, huh? Brutus, your faith in Caesar is misplaced. One day, you're going to have to decide whether your Caesar's man, or your own."
Brutus: "Never! I know Caesar. He wouldn't betray a friend."
Xena: "Pompey was a friend. And Crassus-- wasn't Crassus a friend, too? I was once a very good friend of his. But, maybe you're special. Remember (throws him a sack with Pompey's head in it) this was your doing."

Its finally over. the Amazons are safe. Gabrielle has once again annoited someone else to rule in her stead, and the Amazons can finally give Queen Ephiny the funeral she deserves.

Gabrielle: "...It's so unreal, Xena. I don't know why I don't just cry."
Xena: "Maybe you're trying too hard or maybe part of you knows that Ephiny didn't die in vain. She made a difference with her life and in her death, she became a symbol. One way or another, the Amazons will go on."

The women then discover they've been adopted by Amarise, who's decided to travel with them for the next few weeks/months. After sending her off to wait with Argo, Xena turns to see if Gabrielle is ready to leave... but Gabrielle has no eyes for the Warrior Princess.

:sigh:

She leaves Xena's side and walks towards the burning funeral bier of Queen Ephiny... and she finally starts to cry.

Xena follows her, and does what any friend would do.

Interestingly, despite Gabrielle JUST having put Amariose in HER place, she has to do it to Xena too as the Warrior Princess tries to walk away from Brutus without taking the pinch off! The Amazon 2nd in command tries to prevent Xena from following Gabrielle's commands, and the Queens voice overpowers hers too as she exerts her right.

He needs the money to but supplies and pay his men. he send his top Lieutenant off with the prisoners, and instruct him to bring back the money quickly.

Goodbye Ephiny:eek: (at least in human form), dying even before the opening titles and hello Amrice:confused: for good or ill. We never see Ephiny and Xena make up after TBS but presumably they must have. In the end Xena and Gabby find they have another groupie.
Well at least Gabby hasn't taken up vegetarianism in India. Byebye Pompey, it's an interesting dilemma the 2 face, Gabby's got her way of peace but struggles with it in face of the plight of her beloved Amazons. Xena by contrast has grown in stature able to do something that actually aids Ceaser on behalf of the Amazons.

Oh lord, did you need to quote-pyramid the whole post? I think my mouse wheel had a blowout scrolling down it just now.

Before we start polishing that halo on her head... ;)... remember that Xena isn't above setting up her opponent for the big fall.

Xena knew Caesar wouldn't accept the peace treaty with the Amazons, she was just showing Brutus that his leader was in it for his own lust for power.

By reminding Brutus of three other "famous" friends who were betrayed by Caesar, she was planting even more doubt in his psyche, which you can see bloom after Caesar burns the treaty then calls Brutus a loyal friend.

The writer, Steven Sears, admits on the DVD interviews (alas, not online yet) that this ep was all about manipulating Brutus, which escalates 10 fold in our next installment.

As for Gabby's way of peace... did you notice how far the peacenik has already stepped over the line? SHE'S not fighting, but she's "leading" others into battle. She's doing something even early season 4 (in "A Good Day") Gabrielle claimed she couldn't do. Give the command to send (men) to their deaths.

"For Ephiny! Ephiny-y-y-y-y-!"

I have to say, that I like how in 2 of the last 3 eps, we see the "true" Gabrielle peak out from behind the sari of peace-nik Gabrielle.

In "The Convert", when Xena went down and Gabrielle tried to go to her side. You KNOW had Najara stayed out of her way, she would have grabbed that sword from Xena and dispatched that last warrior herself!

And here in "Endgame" ... we see her taking command of her troops, something a peace-nik actually not only wouldn't do but "couldn't" do and still be true to her "path".

As for Xena and Ephiny after "The Bitter Suite", I always assumed the two girls went BACK to the Amazon village after their stint in Illusia. Who better than a Warrior Princess to set an Amazon Queen's broken arm? :techman:
