Any plans for Civilization V?

Take Two bought Firaxis in 2006 and apparently does have plans for a Civ V, but hasn't said a lot about it at this point. It was planned for 2008 but obviously that didn't happen.

I think the Civ franchise is one that doesn't need updating every few years, though. The games are solid no matter their age. The first three Civ games are still plenty good.

I'm still hoping for a Civ IV styled remake of Alpha Centauri, legal wranglings be damned.

It's still owned by... I don't know actually. But it's owned by some company who has since been bought and spat out by another company.

Oh, lovely. Argh!!

They should just make a sequel and call it something besides "Alpha Centauri" but make it somewhat obvious that's what it really is. ;)

Alpha Centauri was produced by EA, so they might have the rights. If not, Brian Reynolds (significant in developing Civ2 and SMAC before leaving to form his own company and create Rise of Nations).

Anyway, I think Civ4 is holding up well, so I doubt Take Two wants to make another one just yet. Maybe Firaxis will, though, since they seem to mostly remake their old games these days.

It's weird because it was fairly obvious that AC was a sequel anyway. Oh well... I'd definitely love to see it or something similar remade in Civ 4.

^ Call it "Epsilon Eridani", maybe? ;)
That would be better, actually. Epsilon Eridani is a much nicer place to settle down and form a colony.

Or they could go the ToT route and relocate to the harsh environments of Lalande 21185. :bolian:

The reason it has to be Alpha Centauri is that one victory condition for the Civilization series is to send a ship to Alpha Centauri

EDIT: One of the best openings to a game ever

This is true. Still, I think it could still work with a different star system.

And incidentally, I'm more of a fan of the Civ IV intro, but suit yourself. ;)
The main menu music to Civ IV is just as good, if not better. :)

This is true. Christopher Tin did a great job with the incidental music he composed for Civ IV.

I liked the choice of music during the game itself, mostly real world classical music. Especially good use of John Adams's work in Modern Era games.

Indeed. Though I do find the Ancient Era music can get pretty tiring after a while. Thankfully, you don't tend to spend much time in it compared to the other eras.

Well, they've already improved Civ4 with the 3 or so expansions (I played BtS, but I haven't used the Colonization one yet) and they did put our "Revolutions" so maybe it's not such a bad thing to wait a couple more years for Civ V.

Hopefully Civ 5 will have the nukes actually destroy cities instead of a 50% of wiping out all units contained...

Well, that's always been a balancing issue. People in games don't behave the same way as real life, so I understand why they would do it this way.

Civ3 was pretty good. It simplified things a bit, but the dramatically improved UI combined with civ traits made it a more fun game, imo. Civ4 was an even more dramatic departure, which I think improved things for the better.

BTW, anyone interested in a Civ3 or Civ4 play by e-mail game (or pitboss game if you know how to set it up for Civ4) of trekbbs members? Do we have enough people for one of these?
