Alas, poor Hawk! I knew him not.

Captrek

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I was just watching FC and noticed that Frakes and McDonough seem to go out of their way to keep the audience from connecting to Hawk before his classically redshirt demise.

He gets very few lines, but not getting a lot of lines is pretty typical for TNG navigators not named Wesley Crusher. What catches my eye is that it seems like they shoot around him. Somebody sitting in the navigator’s chair should get more screen time just by accident than Hawk gets here, and he doesn’t get to go on any of the action scenes until the one that kills him. Most conspicuously, whenever he just happens to be in the frame, he avoids looking in the direction of the camera.

Yup if anything his presence was an advert for bringing back decontamination gel...

O RLY?

They might need to come up with an in-plot explanation as to why Beverly and Picard always insisted on decontaminating him personally... and together? And was it really necessary for Guinan to take photographs of the whole process? Still that has to be less of a stretch (no pun intended) than finding Spock Prime in a cave.

I was thinking he maybe visited the holodeck and ran a special programme where he, Trip and Mayweather returned from a mission and were locked up in decon for several hours.

But that's just me :drool::drool::drool:

Yikes! I thought a Picard/Crusher/Hawk threesome might stand a chance of pulling you out of your own personal nexus through sheer terror. I can see why the lure of an greased up Anthony Montgomery would trump that. Somebody change the direction of the thread quickly!

I think it is quite hard to incorporate significant roles for the main cast in a movie format let alone the supporting players. I think Hawk did quite well taking that into account.

Wasn't Hawk just a 'superior' redshirt? (and this from someone who watched FC last night - for research purposes :) )

I think he was but that's not a bad thing. NuBSG used a large number of superior redshirts and essentially we care about them a bit more when they die. I don't see any Olsen threads around.

I recognize that, and it’s not at all surprising that the screenplay doesn’t give Hawk a whole lot to do. That position is traditionally a small role on TNG. I think the screenplay gives him more to do than his GEN, INS, and NEM counterparts combined, and there are many TV episodes in which that seat is occupied by a non-speaking extra. What I’m observing is that, taking the screenplay as a given, the photography and acting seem to be calculated to keep the viewer from connecting with the character. Look for it the next time you watch the movie.

Judging by this thread, it seems my observation is wrong in one respect: the character evidently connected very strongly with at least some viewers, particularly gay ones.

Does that have to do with fanon about Hawk being gay?

Surely there are heterosexual women out there who find him just as attractive as I do, not to mention a few straight men who could appreciate that he is easy on the eye.

I'd have been happier to see the return of Lanei Chapman as Ensign Rager. Having watched her in Space: Above and Beyond you can see that her four appearances in TNG didn't scratch the surface of her capabilities as an actress. Having said that, her speaking roles in most of those episodes were quite forgettable and I doubt that her death would have had any more impact than Hawk's.

Even though her screen time was minimal I really liked Sariel Rager. Wish they had done something with her character.

Indeed. I'm straight and it's quite simple. The guy is good looking.

As for the OP, I can't say I noticed. To me, for not being part of the principle cast, he did quite fine for screen time.

I didn't mean 'superior' redshirt in dismissive sense. I was actually sorry when Hawk got ' borgified' as he'd had more 'build-up' than any other unknown helm/crewperson until then :) Actually, I thought Frakes did a pretty job casting/directing-wise, as I even felt for those engineering crew who went into the tubes, despite their limited screentime.

On a separate but related note: in an alternate TV universe would love to see Singer Trek show or movie. There's someone who would pushed the envelope :)

I always wondered a little how an awkwardly crawling borg drone (lets face it, they aren't exactly streamlined and they don't move fast) could actually get close enough to assimilate you in those circumstances.

But thats the 'screaming woman' stereotype.

Also :bolian: nicely done with 'borgified.' Thats what we always say in my family.
