Airiam

If she's an alien, then why the fusion between synthetic and humanoid? Just as I'd love to see Lt. Saru's home world and backstory, hers might potentially be interesting too. So no relation to the Borg... maybe an intermediate state? Tech used to replace failing or "inferior" body parts instead of cadavers a la the Vidiians?

Ok, cool. She obviously has a lot synthetic parts though, I wonder what's the story.

... so do your synthetic parts go, ALL the way down?

A lot of Augmented lifeforms for a society that is supposidly scared of and outlawed...Augments.

I guess it's fine as long as there's metal and rubber involved.

Not all augmentation. Just the kind of genetic engineering that could produce Khan and his ilk.

But replacing entire bodily systems including nearly an entire cranium with advanced tehcnology that might actually be stronger, faster and better than Khan is fine?

Starfleet has fucking whack priorities.

It might be.

The kind of genetic engineering that produced Khan and company was specifically designed for heightened aggression, ambition, conquest, and desire for power. In the most literal sense, the Augments were designed for power. They can't NOT rule. So the Federation decided to ban all genetic engineering, because they couldn't afford to take the risk it would happen again. True, it didn't happen with Bashir, but the rest of the Jack Pack as much as proved that it almost DID happen (remember when they wanted to actually surrender to the Dominion?).

Mechanical augmentation, OTOH, isn't anywhere near as risky. It can make people stronger and faster, or simply repair defects (such as Geordi's blindness), but it doesn't change their personality. It doesn't change who they are. And it's a lot harder to ban.

The whole anti-augment mentality evidenced in Trek is rooted in contemporary fears of genetic engineering, cloning, etc. Those of us into a more Extropian or transhumanist mindset often find Starfleet's attitudes in such matters to be parochial and quaintly 20th century. This might be interesting if Earth banned such research, but other cultures, including human colonies, did not. Indeed, a potential reboot of Star Trek could involve such a situation, with many of the familiar races being offshoot colonies lacking Earth's squeamishness about such things.

As stated above not all, and some of the TOS crew were arguments. Here is the thing with the federation, when you join your culture does not adapt. If your culture depends on things the federation has outlawed, such as augments, you can keep doing it. Just not make new versions that break the law. Because it is a staple of your culture, it is a part of what builds your culture.

I just mean, they are so scared of one form of modification they'll kick people out in the late 24th century, yet sign up any number of lifeforms likely surperior to the Augments in nearly every way.

Why not just...fix one tiny flaw in the Augmentation Genome since their technology is so magically superior even by the mid 23rd century and stop shitting themselves about splicing a gene.

^ Nah, New Humans hate Starfleet and would never serve aboard a ship. Plus they're not mechanically augmented (although telepathic group minds are not uncommon among them).

And they would be ill-suited to space exploration anyway, because they are unable to deal with authority structures and would be especially vulnerable to alien influence.

If i remember the TMP Novelization correctly, Starfleet seemed to have some New Human crewmembers at a time. They seemed to adapt too easily to alien mindsets and philosophies and apparently caused trouble for Starfleet this way, that they were deemed unfit to serve in the fleet.

It was never explained if they were augmented with technological elements or not.

One interesting detail is that they apparently only had one name.

Maybe during Discovery there were still New Human members in Starfleet.

That robot head of hers might be a fancy helmet, for all we know? A really over the top rebreather? She could have some kind of tiny head inside that thing.

Or...

There is a species in the books called the Choblik, who are born with their cybernetic enhancements. Their species was basically gifted nanite/nanoprobes that build the enhancements as part of their biological development in ancient times by an unknown group of scientists. The enhancements give them standard Star Trek-humanoid level sentience, elevating them from clever animals. Like enhanced chimps, for an Earth analogue. Maybe our cyborg in question is similar to the Choblik.

Although, I'd much rather see a Choblik show up in Discovery. Oh how that would make my day, they are by far my favorite Treklit species.
