"Agent Carter" season one discussion and spoilers

Ah, great to see the Howling Commandos treat Peggy with respect and even a little bit of awe. I loved the looks on the faces of her SSR colleagues when the HC just naturally treated Peggy like an equal. The best scene was when Thompson kind of sheepishly asks her opinion of his plan on going into the factory/building after all the HC look to her because they know Thompson's plan is crappy. My prediction was that Thompson would take all the credit for the work she did, I was pleasantly surprised to see that didn't happen. Thanks, Agent Carter, for defying my expectations!

Can't wait to see next week's show! Because I love this show, I'm 95% positive it's going to be cancelled. Just trying to enjoy it while it's here.

While I am equally sure that it will be renewed, nothing is certain.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Junior Juniper bit the dust as, IIRC anyway, he was the only Howler to die in the comics. It would seem that the Howlers were a bigger unit during the war than were shown in CA:TFA.

I think that this was the best episode yet. The depiction of the "Red Room" training facility was genuinely disturbing. Natasha broke free of the indoctrination, but I don't foresee Dottie having similar good fortune.

It was nice to finally see Peggy get some respect before the shit hits the fan next week.

So, in the NY area, ABC news kept cutting into the show for 5 minute blather sessions about a train wreck north of NYC. As Newscasters are wont to do, the guy just repeated the same info over and over for 5 minutes, showing the same footage over and over for 5 minutes, and cutting to a local reporter who repeated the same info for 5 minutes, while we missed 5 minute chunks of the show. The second time they did that, I bailed and watched Monday's Gotham on DVR. Yes, ABC, you chased me to another network by interrupting my evening of escapism with unwelcome reality.

The news belongs on during the news broadcast, not in the middle of a good show.

This episode was a better action movie than a good amount of action movies I've seen.

That scared me when Dugan was hurt, but I think they would have the good stuff like they were suiting up with in the locker room.

I got a bit confused about something. It said Russia 1937, so one of those girls would have been the neighbor, but the little girl that stabbed Dugan and Juniper looked just like girl in 1937. Is it just me, or is that another significant thing, like clones or twins (one frozen for a while)?
And don't forget somewhere else in Russia, they've already turned Bucky into Winter Soldier, he could even pop up if they keep going to Russia. It wouldn't be out of place at all.

One final thing, I know people commonly said Russia when they meant USSR, but no one even said USSR, Soviets or Soviet Union once. I thought that was strange. They did say "Reds" I wonder if that was a slip or a choice or what.

1. Falling asleep on guard duty. They shoot you for that.

2. Murdering prisoners of war, and especially 6 of them when they're not looking, is not only a crime, but probably a war crime. And the cover up ain't good either.

3. Taking a medal he doesn't deserve... Maybe not today, but in 1946, nine guys drag you out of your bed in the middle of the night and throw you on a bonfire.

4. Freezing in a combat situation happens, but it also means that the rest of your platoon can't trust that person to get their job done under fire ever again. A lack of understanding of psychology would label him a coward rather than a mental case, but in either case, he's unfit for duty and a ####ing liability.

I really don't understand this back story if Peggy didn't throw him out of the plane on the way back to America for being a lying, cheating, coward. Unless she plans on using all this dirt to leverage him into being subordinate and helping Carter with her moonlighting, which will just give him reason to shoot Peggy in the back when she's not looking.

Some people have teddy bears, some people have handcuffs, and some people have both.

I am quickly finding Peggy to be the least interesting character on this show. Enjoyed the Howling Commandoes a lot. The story, meh, more Stark filler and we learn the tough guy is not so tough.

Hmm, they are pretty similar, both sea serpents from Middle Eastern myths. They may both descend from the seven-headed serpent of Sumerian mythology, although the Bible gives Leviathan only one head; also Leviathan breathes fire while the Lernaean Hydra does not.

I think they are similarly named for a reason, just as the Centipede organization was.

In the comics, Leviathan is a Soviet offshoot in the same way that HYDRA was an offshoot of the Nazis. Since the Nazis and the USSR were mortal enemies, it seems unlikely that their respective superscience organizations would be associated with each other.

I'm pretty sure they were two different actresses who just happened to look similar. IMDb lists two redheaded teen actresses in the episode, one playing "Eva" and one playing "Anya."

"Reds" is definitely what an American soldier at the time would've called them. And I don't think they would've said "Soviet Union" or the like except in a formal context; it makes sense that they just said "Russia."

There was one historical inaccuracy here that's forgivable -- when Thompson talked about the "Japanese" soldiers coming into his camp. An ex-GI in 1946 would've most likely called them "Jap" soldiers instead. But of course that's a racial slur, so naturally they didn't want to use it in the show. Then again, given Thompson's guilt about killing them when they were surrendering, maybe he takes care to address them more respectfully.

This most recent episode was pretty good, though it might have been Dugan's doing. I like his character. It is good to finally see the SSR respecting Carter, though I still think they should have treated her like that from day one (she's a war hero and it takes a small skirmish to finally win them over?). It's comforting that the show is picking up for me. I hope it continues to get better.

Oh, and were they referencing the inhuman Yeti?

Great episode tonight, probably the best one yet in a show packed with good episodes. Out of the 5 aired I'd only say one was fairly slow.

The "Miss Union Jack" line was indeed funny but I hope a prelude to the idea that in further seasons(yeah, I think we'll get a second season) we may get Union Jack!

Dottie, Dottie, Dottie--going to be interesting to see where the final 3 episodes go with you as well!!

And even ignoring that, since the cryptographer apparently had the same power, how does not translating it into Russian prevent him from recognizing coordinates? /brainmelt

Still cannot decide if the back story on Thompson makes him more sympathetic or more unlikable. At least he acknowledged Carter's role in the mission in front of the chief, but exited the room chattering about how many Reds he killed. (Bravado in front of the boys - keep up the macho man persona?)

Sousa is smart and that is not a good thing for Peggy.

I liked how Jarvis was going to tug at his ear when talking to the chief but stopped himself from showing his tell that Peggy alerted him to.

I loved seeing Neil McDonough (spelling?). He is always great.

It's Neal McDonough, but hey, you got the last name right, and that's the harder one.

Trivia: Before he was Dum Dum Dugan, McDonough was Bruce Banner, in the '90s animated Hulk series (with Lou Ferrigno as the voice of his alter ego). He's also played Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in a DC animated short.

Great episode, they really did a lot. Real consequences too, as we saw some more good guys die.

I too am torn about Agent Thompson. It seems like we were supposed to be more sympathetic towards him, since he finally admitted the truth to Peggy, but holy smokes, he made an awful mistake, and then covered it up and accepted a medal for it. They're going to have to work a lot harder to redeem his character now. Maybe he'll take a bullet for Peggy in the finale.

And then bam, Lionel Luthor shows up. Nice to see John Glover, but that seemed like a one-episode-only character.

I kind of liked my theory (well, of course I did) that Hydra infiltrated both SHIELD and the KGB and played them off each other like SPECTRE. It helped explain the star on the Winter Soldier's arm. Leviathan does somewhat undercut that.
