Absent Enemies blurb

I approached it very much as a mystery story. The novella word count also really lent itself to a plotline of a length such as you'd find in single TNG episode; if the story conveys that feeling in any way, I'll be satisfied.

That's actually one of the things I've liked about the novellas. The shorter word count really does tend to make them feel more like episodes of the series, while the novels tend to feel more like movies.

It's worth keeping in mind that it is a e-book novella, so there is a chance that it isn't going to be the same kind of story as the rest of the post-The Fall Titan novels.

True. Maybe I'm just feeling overly skeptical with regards to that for no rational reason.

Regardless... I'm buying it. lol

Also wouldn't it be more interesting to see the life of an Admiral and his ship? We've not really had any novels focused on an admiral before, much less the adjutant of the CIC of Starfleet.

And Archer is an admiral in Rise of the Federation. And there have been several novels and at least one novella about Admiral Kirk.

The rank of admiral in Trek could use a little redemption. There have been some great ones out there Akaar, Ross and now Janeway and Riker. Would be interesting to see Riker be an admiral for the rest of his career, something worth exploring IMHO.

Well Voyager has Janeway as an admiral now.

I'm a third of the way through Protectors, is that before or after? If after, surely it should be under spoiler code!

She never stops being one..... so it's not a spoiler

So the chapter end where it says
she handed over a load of information with the possible replacement CO of Full Circle and that she stopped tracking the fleets movements and giving them orders
was a massive red herring?

Either way, classy! And it can be classed as a spoiler.

No all he says is that she never stops being an admiral in the Voyager series.

Yes, I know what he said. The thing is the way I interpreted what was written, she leaves Starfleet, not just the Full Circle fleet. I guess I should have said that in my first post on the matter.

Hmm, I'm more than your 1/3 through the novel and I never had the feeling that she had left Starfleet at all.

Well, Ross was great...until he sided with Section 31 and let them assassinate Zife.

This is true, I was always sad to see this to an admiral, who up to that point had been awesome.

Don't forget "Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges," though. There are even hints of this aspect of his character way back when he was introduced back in the beginning of season six.

I know he's basically left the novels now, but I think there is a lot still worth mining from his character.

In the novella, Riker reflects a good bit on admirals, and the roles they play when aboard ship. He's certainly had a lot of experiences, good and bad, being on the bridge when an admiral is there -- he definitely wants to take only the right lessons.

They're not admirals, but I remember back in the old West End Star Trek board game where they actually wrote into the rules that a Federation commissioner on board the ship would make the worst decision possible. I figured Riker knows all the historical examples (and some from his personal life) and wants to make sure Titan's crew remains autonomous and effective, even though he needs the ship here for his new responsibilities.

I'm very much a naval history buff -- command structure dynamics are great fodder for fiction.
