ABC causes last-minute havoc!

The purpose of the scenes was to transition the audience from the emotional intensity of the finale into the evening news, hence "calm them down." Not exactly sure why such a transition is needed...it's not like the news is very calming anyway. Or maybe the scenes were supposed to have some other emotional impact on the audience than calming? None of it makes any sense. I think it was just some ABC idiot who wanted to mess with things.

Jack dies.

Pictures of a plane crash.

Hurricanes! Tornadoes! Little Blonde Girl Missing!

Real calming...

I think it's hilarious that after all the sturm and drang over this, the same footage of the plane wreckage is included over the end credits of the finale on the DVD set as well.

I thought it was a perfect way to end the show myself...though of course fans were going to try to dissect it, heh.

I gotta say, recently (while I don't remember the show) I was watching something that had a wonderfully funny but poignant last scene and, before I could process it, my local news busted in with thier "picture-in-picture" ambush and blurted the opening story of "FAMILY OF 4 DIE IN HOUSE FIRE !!" before the credits even rolled... it was quite jarring.

"If you thought Jack's death was sad, wait until you hear about the family of four who died in a house fire near you. Coming up next."

Really?:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw: I bought the DVDs but haven't sat down to open them yet so I didn't know this. They knew about the controversy but they put it on the DVDs. Oh, man...some people are gonna be so confused if they had no idea about this whole to do.

OMG they were lying! The characters all really did die in the original crash!:eek::eek: I want six years of my life back!!!

I agree.

I myself figured it was a way to show that just as the passengers of Oceanic 815 found relics from Adam and Eve, the Black Rock, and the Dharmas, that someday next visitors would find relics from the plane.

Indeed. The events of the series, and what remains behind afterward, have become part of the island's mythology.

I'll get a chance to see this now. In Canada we didn't get this little tidbit on broadcast.
