A case for big cars/trucks

TheLonelySquire

Vice Admiral
My wife, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and infant daughter were sideswiped and sent off the highway last night at 60+ miles per hour. Everyone except my daughter had bumps and bruises and my daughter escaped completely unscathed. Thank God for SUV's!

The state cop told us that if we had had a smaller car the accident likely would have been much, much worse. I won't be buying a SmartCar anytime soon. Consider protecting your family when buying your next vehicle above gas milage. Thanks.

I use an even safer form of transport - a bus. How would a SUV stand up to being side swiped by one of them?

I'm glad your family is ok. I really am. I don't see a case for big cars, tho. Just for safer car, which is not the same. Big cars can be safe, but a safe car doesn't need to be big.

Glad to hear you and your family are alright TLS, that's some scary shit.

I won't be downgrading to a car, ever. Well maybe if I'm able to afford two, I'll get a BMW M3 or something to complement truck. Love my SUV way too much, it's safe and practical.

I don't like big cars, but only because they're a pain to drive (and park) and they get really shitty gas mileage. It's not a crusade or anything like that.

Thanks to all of you that sent your well wishes. We've decided to stay close to home this weekend and watch movies and get some chinese DELIVERY! Now if I can just convince my wife to watch the complete series of Firefly on bluray..... ;)

Seriosuly, we're just so lucky I can't even believe it.

And that's cool if that's what you care about. My SUV is extremely agile and easy to park and I'm willing to pay for the gas. I'll never give them up. To each his own.

I actually have an SUV - but it's a small one. A Honda CR-V. Best frickin' car I've ever driven in my lifetime. I hope it lasts me twenty years or more. It gets great mileage *and* it kicks ass as a winter car (something that none of my previous cars ever did).

TLS: What town did this happen in?

Because I'm a volunteer firegfighter and I subscribe to a forum in CT that chronicles Fire and EMS activity. No such accident was reported in CT in the last two days.

Yes, we should all live like cowards and only buy large inefficent expensive SUVs just in case that 1 in a million accident happens.

No Thanks. I'll save my money and do research on cars with good crash test ratings and good mileage.

That being said, I am glad everyone is ok.

Thanks for your concern. However, how is owning an SUV living like a coward? My responsibility is to protect my family and I don't think there's anything cowardly about it.

Squire, I'm very glad everyone is okay. My goodness.

You mentioned Smart Cars. I saw a crash test of one of those, and after hitting a stationary target, the thing bounced around like a beach ball at a Styx concert.

Fuck that shit. Leave those wheeled coffins to the childless navel-gazers to drive.

Joe, as always I defer to your unique perspective. Thanks! ;)

What almost hit you? A dump-truck?!

Glad you and your are safe but I'm still of the opinion that a wel-designed high-end midsized or large car would be just as safe as an SUV and a whole lot more efficent, better on the enviroment and makes you look like less of a lemming wanting a status symbol/dick extension.

If you *need* an SUV to work on a farm or do things you need 4-wheel drive or something to climb a mountain for go for it.

Tooling around the interstate between the 'burbs and the mall?

Get a Taurus.
