2025 Comics Thread

The Wormhole

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Since there doesn't seem to be a thread for Trek comics released in 2025 and I understand it's preferred to have a separate thread for comics rather than just lumping them in the novels thread, I figured I'd start a thread for the 2025 comics releases, beginning with the announcement that there will be a tie-in to the Section 31 movie being released in February.

Thank you. I find it hard these days to keep track of which comics are coming out. In particular because of the parallel/overlapping Theseus/Defiant series and their mini-series spinoffs(?).
There's a few of us that track the comings and goings, I have a site at startrekbookclub.com that has everything I'm aware of that's due to be published at https://www.startrekbookclub.com/upcoming-books/ I also post about every week's new books here on the trekbbs :)

I read the 3rd issue of the ongoing Lower Decks comic last week and it was a ton of fun.
All the stuff with the planet of guidance counselors was really funny, and the mystery around the star system disappearing was interesting and I loved the explanation video for what was going on was hysterical, although I didn't totally understand what it was talking about.
This ends on a hell of a cliffhanger, so I'll be anxiously awaiting #4. This is the first time I've ever read new individual comic issues as they're coming out, so I'm not used to having to wait a month to find out what happens next. I usually only read the collections, but Hoopla, the free e-book/digital comic library app, is getting the individual issues on the day they're being released, so I couldn't resist.
If you're wanting more Lower Decks now that it's over, I highly recommend the comics, they're fantastic.

Rutherford to bridge. We’re not dead! However, after escaping a vacuum collapse of the Alecto system, the U.S.S. Cerritos is lost inside a new space-time that’s expanding away from us in every direction at the speed of light. To make matters worse, an alien intelligence made of pure energy has possessed Tendi and my bodies, shunting our consciousnesses into the ship’s computer. While it’s a fun, flirty energy, we’d very much like our bodies back so we can pop the expanding time bubble and save our universe!

I also note that this series is now only doing a single cover for every issues, which is super strange for IDW. Also, because the first miniseries was just three issues long and had the same name, this is the first "Star Trek: Lower Decks #4" that's been released.

I was hoping to read that today, but Hoopla doesn't have it yet. They did get the first three issues, so hopefully it will show up there eventually.

Sisko is stuck outside space-time on Bajor. He does not know if his crew and his family are alive or if his universe even exists beyond this plane. All Sisko knows is that he must stop Lore before everyone and everything he loves is destroyed forever. To do that, he must build the Orbs of Destiny. It all comes down to this. If there’s any hope for a future, the Prophets will reveal it now.

it was originally solicited to release a while ago, but the industry is in flames right now, so I'm just happy they got it out at all.
I’m not plugged in to these kinds of things, so I’m curious. What all makes you describe the industry as being in flames?

Diamond Distributors was THE distributor for the industry for the better part of 40 years, during the covid pandemic they weren't able to keep up with the business and two other distributors have entered the market and now the big two are distributed by someone other than diamond. Diamond just recently filed for bankruptcy protections to restructure their debt, which is significant. To wit, IDW filed their financial disclosures and mentioned that they were owed a huge sum, there's a break down on bleeding cool: https://bleedingcool.com/comics/the-top-thirty-companies-that-diamond-owes-money-to/

During all this IDW was voluntarily delisted from the stock market and taken back into private ownership, lost the gi joe and transformers licenses and hit a considerable lull in their multimedia projects like Locke & Key that were doing fantastic business while they were active. they're releasing 3-4 books a week and are leaning hard into the TMNT and Godzilla licenses with no self owned IPs in a while.

also with all this, there's the tariffs. not the ones from this go around, but during the first trump presidency tariffs affected imported printed materials, some printing houses went belly up and the ones that are left are having some issues keeping up with the demand with the big two getting priority over the non-big two, things getting stuck in customs, whole orders going missing, and times are interesting. My local shop has had a $2,000 order with BCW (e.g. bags, boards, boxes) that's been sitting unfulfilled for nearly a month. If you remember the price of lumber shooting up a couple years ago, the same thing happened to print paper. Some Treklit was caught up with all that and we ended up with maps in the front of "High Frontier" because of the printing delays.

Of course I'm not directly involved in any of this an am only an amateur reporter on these things, so please take all this with a hefty grain of salt. I'm just grateful that anything is making it to us at all.
