Portugal vs. Spain was an outstanding game. Really enjoyable. The Spanish looked really good, I could stare at what they do with the ball for hours. I wish Germany was able to play like that. I can't believe Ronaldo scored three times, that's probably as often as in all his previous World Cup matches combined.

I get into soccer once every four years. And make lame jokes about soccer being much more deserving of the name 'football' even though I prefer American football.
Maybe soccer should get to be called Football and Football should be called Brain Billiards?

Same here. Remarkable footballer, but it's impossible (for me) to warm to someone so utterly full of himself.
Great game; shame about the result. Narcisso will have enjoyed it immensely, though.

Well, that went much better than I thought it would given the class chasm between the sides, but France get the points. We didn't create much, if anything, but at least we were competitive (the pathetic first-up "efforts" against Chile four years ago and Germany in 2010 still rankle). It's not much, but it'll do.
No worries. IMO there's only one Ronaldo, anyway.
France is my 'reserve team' this World Cup but they played just as incoherently and uninspiedly as Germany has the last few games. So great choice. 
Then again, this was only the first game in the tournament which is often somewhat uneven. I think they'll improve.

First V.A.R of the World Cup and still the ref gets it wrong, you have to be a special kind of stupid for that to occur. The defender clearly knicked the ball before gravity kept him sliding forwards (where's that dam Infinity gauntlet when you need one) and he made minimal contact with the attacker...
Man before ball is quite clear in the rulebook as NOT a penalty.

Big teams are usually scheduled to reach their full potential at the last stage of the competition so yes, they are supposed to improve.
The French team has great individuals but have difficulties to play as a team so maybe a difficult 1st match will help the cohesion.
