Star Trek Tactics

Steve O'Core

Hello there!

Has there been any talk of the soon to be released "Star Trek Heroclix Tactics"? (Is this the right forum for Star Trek table top and boardgames?)

Yes, it is the right forum, however board games have never generated a lot of traffic in comparison to Trek computer games.

Oh, those look nice.

Not so interested in the game, but I have a thing for ship models.

That's what I'm thinking too. I'm not really convinced that the Heroclix system will be the best choice for starship combat. But, as you say the miniatures look pretty nice. And, if you snag them at pre-order prices, the cost is reasonable.

Wizkids released another preview today of the Defiant and Regency 1:

Over at www.hcrealms.com there is a thread for "Evidence" that keeps track of all the known info on the set so far. Here is the link: http://hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346273

I thought the list of known units was pretty cool, and useful.

I am actually looking foward to this. I'm not much of a "clix" player, but I had a blast collecting the trek micros back in the 90's. I had seriously considered buying the fleet captains game when it was released, but the price point, fact that the miniatures were unpainted, (I'm not skilled enough to paint them to my satisfaction.) and the reviews stating the poor quality control changed my mind. I'm glad wizkids has decided to release these. I might give the game itself a go. Thought it would have been cool if you had "common" unnamed ships with generic abilities and "uncommon/rare" hero ships with special powers. so you could have mulitple ships of the same class in your fleets. but am still looking foward to this. have already preordered a starter set and a brick of boosters.

I was not aware of this. Much like Tribble puncher, I was very into the micro machines in the 90s and these are really similar- I do like the quality. I also love space battles, board games and Star Trek, so this is really exciting to me. I also have the 'Star Trek: Expeditions' cooperative boardgame which comes with two heroclix ship models, so I wonder if those will work in this game also.

Has anyone played 'Star Trek: Fleet Captains'? The boardgame community is absolutely buzzing about it- many reviewers have called it 'the best game they've ever played'- quite a triumph for people who play games professionally!

I'm definitely picking it up- sounds like one of the most 'Star Trek' like boardgames in a long, long time.

Let us know what you think. I'm thinking about getting the "expeditions" game. I just can't make myself pay 70-100 for a game made with such shoddy materials. but the gameplay has gotten good reviews...

Yeah! It's nice to find some other gamers here (I mean, aside from online/computer stuff).

I just took the plunge and ordered both "Expeditions" and "Fleet Captains".

From what I have heard, the away team focused game, "Expeditions" has recieved the most mixed reviews. It's a cooperative game, so everyone has to work together to complete the mission, and I guess there are a lot of cards involved. But! It comes with not only miniatures for the away team members, but also a Clix-sized miniature of the JJ Abrams Enterprise and a Klingon Battlecruiser.

"Fleet Captains" seems to be getting much better reviews over at boardgamegeek.com . I guess the initial batch of games were rushed through production in order to meet the August deadline last year (for debut at GenCon), and this is what lead to the crappy quality of the cards. From what I understand the card quality has since been improved. The starships remain unpainted, but the detail of the sculpts is quite good.

Both of these games are available pretty reasonably at Miniature Market. "Fleet Captains" is $65.00 (rather than the $99.99 suggested retail), and "Expeditions" is marked as Clearance (!) for $27.00.

I was given Expeditions for Christmas and would not recommend it unless you're a die-hard collector. I mean, it's fun and all, but I wouldn't say it's a must buy.

I'll look out for Fleet Captain and post back when I've played a few games! (it's getting much better reviews than Expeditions)

Thanks for all the updates Steve! I ordered a Starter and a 12 boosters from my local games shop, looks like they wont be in till next week...Let us know if youve purchased any and your impressions!

Yes, I ordered some of the "Counter Top Displays", which hold 12 miniatures each, and got them yesterday in the mail.

The miniatures look really fantastic. They are larger than the MicroMachines versions from years back, and much much more detailed. These two factors help me square the price point of $3.99-$4.99 per booster/ship. Each of the Federation ships has tiny, tiny Federation decals and serial numbers; Klingon ships have Empire markings and Klingon letters. Some are so small that I had to squint to be able to make out the letters--but the detail is certainly there! I can't say enough how pleased I am with them.

A couple things to brace yourself for though. First, every once in a while I notice a warp nacelle or two would be attached at slightly the wrong angle. The collector in me was a little annoyed, but the ships still look good on the gaming table or display shelf. The second thing is that the stat cards are made out of a flimsy paper stock so that they can be bent into a shape that fits into the booster box. So, just be aware that all of your cards will be curved at least, and some will be creased. But, if you anticipate these two things you won't be too disappointed when you see them, and you can focus on enjoying the miniatures.

Picked up 3 of these at the gaming store the other day. Ended up with:

006: U.S.S. Yosemite (Common)
015: U.S.S. Voyager (Uncommon)
022: U.S.S. Enterprise-E (Rare)

Very nice detail except the Enterprise-E is missing the name on the hull. It has the number, tho. The Yosemite's underpod is off-center a bit, too. I'm surprised how much detail they have on such a small model.

Cheap enough where I could buy a couple every week. I might have to collect the whole set. Need to find a place online to trade duplicates - I'm sure there will be some.

Now they just have to come out with a non-Federation/non-Klingon set with Romulans, Borg, Cardassians, Civilian ships, Starbases, etc...
