Is Lady Gaga a hero?

She's already been around to long to be a flash in the pan.

Now, whether or not she'll be around in 10 years remains to be seen, but for the next 5? Yes.

I don't know if I'd call her a "hero." She's a strong advocate for gay rights and that's a good thing as far as I'm concerned, but I think it's a bit much to call her a "hero" for it.

We just got back from Las Vegas. We stayed at the MGM Grand, and saw Rush on Saturday night. Lady Gaga played the same venue on Friday night. It was certainly a ripe environment for people watching...

She strikes me as a completely manufactured star. Everything is so calculated and deliberate. That's just one old man's opinion.

As for her music, what little I've heard of it, I think it sucks. But it's not my style in any case.

Hero? I don't see how. But I suppose everyone has the right to choose their own heroes, don't they? If teenage girls want to walk around with fishnet stockings and ridiculous crap on their heads, well...more power to them.

:techman:

But really, so what? Most of Motown were controlled to a degree unheard of in the modern age and they turned out some decent tunes.

Loved this post. Maybe it makes us sound like fogies, but I'm with you, Digits. I think it's all kind of calculated.

IMO she's no 'hero'...nor is she a 'flash in the pan'. She's just another manufactured star of the digital age, where it's more about theatrics (both on and off stage) than music. If American Idol taught this country nothing else, it taught us that the music industry is becoming less and less about the actual music every day.

But hey, if that is what the kids go for these days, I guess that's fine. Good for them, I say! But I'll stick with my Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam albums, thank you very much.

The Boss is not pretty. Nor is he a thespian. But even at 60, he can rock out a kick-ass good tune! :techman:

I don't know of any artists I'd consider to be heroes. And if they were, it wouldn't be because of their art per se.

Agreed... While I find some of her stuff catchy, I don't think it has nearly as much staying power as Madonna (of whom I'm not a fan either)... She will run out of ways to be shocking and sexy and I predict in a few years, we'll get a couple of "Gaga Unplugged" type of stuff..

But now that you've seen the Time Machine Tour, how was it?

Did she overcome a condition once preventing her from singing and now sings?
Has she pulled herself up by some proverbial boot straps of a hard life?
Did she have to raise her siblings while mom/dad struggled to pay bills or were in jail?

She is not a hero. Just a musical talent.

^ In your opinion, she's not a hero. The great thing about heroes is that they mean something to each person, on an individual level, something that inspires or motivates, something that makes a person want to listen to that hero, even if it's more a concept than a reality, that does not change anything. So to someone, she may be a hero, to others, a musical talent, but that does not set anything into stone. Rather, it frees it from the mundanity of such things.

Emphasis mine.

Is she any more manufactured than David Bowie was in the 1970s? She, like Bowie, is doing the manufacturing, unlike many of the Motown artists, as mentioned above, or the Spice Girls.

I give her a lot of credit, she is doing her own thing, doing the music she likes, and doing it all out. It doesn't seem like she's compromising. Now, whether one likes the music or not...

To be honest...she has a great ass. I don't like her voice or songs at all. If she has fans...great...I don't understand the appeal...musically...I will admit I have recently found her attractive...I really didn't at first.

Is she a hero? That isn't up to me to decide...she isn't my hero though.

Heroism does seem to be in the eye of the beholder, a point that our blog on heroes emphasizes (see URL in my sig below).

In my own opinion, she has to go far beyond showing great talent to be considered a hero. John Lennon, for example, was an activist for peace. As a champion for gay rights, Lady Gaga may be in the process of carving out a similar path of social justice.

Exactly. To the best of my knowledge she writes her own music, designs her costumes and probably has imput into the set design and choreography of her performances. Which is a far cry from manufactured stars like the Monkees or the Spice Girls. ( I'm not hip enough to know who the current crop is). She probably has a bigger say in her direction than Elvis did under Col. Parker or the Beatles under Bian Epstein. Epstein put the Beatles in matching suits and carefully controled their image in the press and public. Is there a Parker or Epstein behind Gaga?

Not sure how old some of your are, but as a guy who grew up in the 70s, Gaga's brand of "outrageous" is pretty familiar. The aforementioned David Bowie, Elton John, LaBelle or Parliment/Funkedelic could match Gaga's "outrageousness" without breaking a sweat. And if you are my age, guess what? You've become your parents! :p

I don't know if hero is the right word but she's done a lot for causes I support and she produces interesting songs, performance and fashion choices so I like her a lot. She's odd in that she sexualizes herself despite not being very attractive and yet somehow does become sexy. It's all very confusing to me.
