My favourite Sci-Fi franchise is Doctor Who, which has recently overtaken Star Trek in my appreciation.

I'm not sure I would call "The Martian Chronicles" a "franchise". It's a classic book that was made into a miniseries which my sense of nostalgia tells me was decent. (I bought it on DVD a while ago but haven't watched it yet.)

And the problem with referring to BSG as a "franchise" is that it means you have to include the 1970s series and Galactica 1980. *shudder*

I'd define a "franchise" as any related group of shows which are set in the same universe and. They have to be related by being spinoffs and they may share characters, or may not. (So Doctor Who, by virtue of the existence of K9 & Company, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, would be a franchise. Trek and Stargate would obviously fit, as well.)

I'm not sure where V fits. If they would just make the bloody Next Generation miniseries they promised ages ago...

I'm also not sure how I'd rank them all, but I'd definitely have Trek at the top of my list. I might put Doctor Who next, then Buffy/Angel.

Star Trek

Wing Commander (I don't care if they're video games, they were awesome)

Star Wars (although I'm starting to lose my patience with George "Rape my Childhood" Lucas)

I've never read Dune or any other "classic" sci-fi collections. Truth be told, I'm not really a huge fan of the genre outside of the above mentioned. If there was more of it, Firefly would probably be at the top of my list, but there's just not enough of a sample pool to forecast untapped awesomeness.

best sci-fi ever

In order...

Farscape
Firefly
Stargate
Babylon 5
nuBSG (the first two seasons rank higher, but 3 and 4 knocked it down)
Star Trek

I'm still in the process of watching Buffy/Angel and Doctor Who, so I'm not sure where they rank yet.

Babylon 5
Doctor Who
NuBSG
Mass Effect (believe it)
Star Trek (specifically DS9, and sans VOY/ENT)
Star Wars

Leaving aside the whole "franchise" thing...

Blakes 7
Babylon 5
Farscape

The Avengers (Rigg era in particular)
Doctor Who (classic)
Star Trek (TOS / TNG / Voy only).

The first three are out on their own. The others are in turn well ahead of anything else I've seen, though had it lasted more than one season Now and Again would be in there somewhere.

To little surprise or fanfare, I rank the various franchises purely on what I personally like best. For me to say which is "best" is rather silly at best. With that understanding, my rankings are:
- Babylon 5
- Star Trek (original, pre-TNG)
- Farscape
- Firefly
- Star Trek (TNG, DS9)
- Star Wars

Those are the ones I have seen the most of and most familiar with. There are many otehrs I have not watched to any depth, and so cannot rank even on a personal preference scale. That would include such as Dr. Who, BSG and the Gates
